Hope things turn around for them soon or they will be food for worms.

Goodwill for a tax deduction never made sense.
Goodwill for helping a charity never made sense.
Goodwill for keeping almost garbage out of the landfill made some sense.  Nothing has changed,

I can't believe that people will only donate to thrift stores if they get a written tax deduction.  Lol.   biatch, when you throw your stuff out, it becomes worthless.   You turned it into garbage.
You don't get to claim that it is both valuable, then demand value for it.  Mercenary twats.

Used clothing is not longer generally shoved out to 3rd world  rag makers anymore

I'm a bit surprised to hear this is a problem. Been a long time since I was in a thrift that wasn't bursting at the seams with clothing and miscellaneous bric-a-brac.

cide1: Goodwill for a tax deduction never made sense.

Depends.  The year my parents died, valuing everything that didn't garage sale at the "Goodwill Donation Guide" value (thousands of theoretically $1-$2 books and clothing items) and donating it cut out a bunch of taxes, and I needed to get rid of everything anyway.  And if you were already donating enough to bother itemizing anyway (this was mostly the tithe-paying Mormons I knew), might as well take the deduction.  But, this was back when the standard deduction was like $10,000 for a couple, not $25-28k like it is post-Trump.

My clothing purchases are down significantly since COVID and WFH. Minimal new coming in means that the disposals are also down. What I am buying is cheap comfortable stuff that has no second life.

FTA:
"The cars, on New Year's Eve, would be lined up around the building," Goodwill's Michael Flannery said. "That's because everyone wanted to get that receipt for their taxes so they could get the deduction."

Dafuq? Lined up around the building? Is there some sort of tax incentive that I'm missing for lining up at the 11th hour on the last day of the year to donate?

Donating to charity = good. Embellishing to further your cause = bad.

Hardly anyone bothers with an itemized tax return anymore since you no longer get full credit for the interest you pay on your home or state and local taxes (SALT). And to think some people wonder why millennials aren't buying homes and squirting out babies by the score.

I blame Madonna's flippant 1980's material girlism.

Goodwill pays less than minimum wage.

With Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace, you can get rid of and maybe sell used items even more conveniently than dropping them off.

Another pandemic pendulum. Often during 2021 Goodwill was refusing donations.

The good donated stuff goes straight online these days.

Unless you don't have an alternate donation location do not give shiat to Goodwill.

1. They are a for profit corporation
2. The "service" they provide to the developmentally are nobs, working in their stores.
3. They treat their employees like shiat.

Starve them so they go away.
