Funny, I read a book once about this very kind of thing happening in another country.

Weird how some folks get real sensitive if you call them out on their bullsh*t.

I mean, how DARE you warn folks that they're coming for them? How dare you document what's been done in the past, and make it readily available?

Okay, the same organizations that come out whenever some semi celebrity makes a Holocaust denial statement, and makes them go through a Walk of Shame, including a visit to the Holocaust Museum.

Same thing to the picture opponents. At bayonet, if needed. And a framed picture of Wiesel, to punctuate the point.

When you look at a quote by a Holocaust survivor and say "I think that's an attack on my politics," that should be a sign that you're on the wrong side of history.

They will just never admit to being fascist. Like what's the problem? Is it the label? We could always go with Profa, in contrast to Antifa if that makes their little fee-fees better.

After major public outcry, the teacher was told he could put the quote back up on his door, but with this policy in place, we can be sure more incidents like this will keep happening.

At least there's this.

That quote applies to every one of you who chooses not to speak up when a friend or relative says something racist or homophobic. That's where it starts. It starts with "liberals" trying to "keep the peace" and not "rock the boat" or "make a scene."

I had an excellent Lit teacher in high school. She insisted that I read Wiesel and Solzhenitsyn.

That was Eastern Kentucky in the 90s, and I'm pretty sure it's a big reason I don't compare anything anything in my life to the Holocaust or the gulags.

I think one of the biggest problems is that our Holocaust education is abysmal. Like, we tend to focus too much on the literal facts and figures about the Holocaust, and... So what? Everybody knows that six and a half million people were systemically executed. What's our take away supposed to be from that? What lessons do we actually learn to ensure that it never happens again?

Like, as far as I'm concerned, if we actually taught the more complex, sociological reasons as to how the Holocaust was allowed to happen, most people would grimly realize that they are capable of becoming Nazis.

Last year, three far-right candidates were elected to our school board, two of whom are members of Moms for Liberty, a conservative organization that has campaigned against COVID restrictions in schools, the inclusion of LGBTQ rights and mentions of race in curriculums, and has led several book banning efforts. From the moment they were elected, these members have set their sites on targeting our LGBTQ kids.
First it was book bans clearly focused on LGBTQ-themed books; then there were directives to not use student's pronouns or names; then there were administrative decisions to unfairly punish staff who speak out against these discriminatory directives. The situation has become so extreme that the ACLU stepped in and filed a formal complaint against our district, claiming that Central Bucks is creating a "hostile environment" for LGBTQ students. Due to the complaint, our district is currently being investigated by the Federal Department of Education.

Fark these farking bigots and everyone who voted for them.

This film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. It is f*cking brutal and devastating. It shows you exactly what happens when you don't stand up to fascists.

Everyone should watch this film. Every single one of us. It's every bit as important as, say, Schindler's List. I'd argue even more so. The whole thing is on YouTube, and it has subtitles.

Why did they let him speak? Why did they remove the Elie Wiesel quote? Why have they banned Pride flags? Because they refuse to take a stand. Because they believe they're being "neutral." If they actually read the Wiesel quote - and really took in what he was saying - they would see how "neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim." They would see how our kids are feeling vulnerable and afraid. They would see how us parents feel helpless to protect them. They would see how their culture of neutrality isn't neutral at all.

My goodness but this author is ignorant.  These people don't believe they're being neutral, they're simply just smart enough to know they have to claim to be neutral while enacting their vile bigotry and hate.

That comes from the school district I sent my children to!

The board was taken over in a coup by a bunch of right wing A-holes who campaigned on just the opposite of what they are doing!
They and their minions forced one board member to resign due to threats and harassment of the poor guy, He finally said FUC* it and resigned imedalty.
That allowed the board to "appoint" one of their own and now they hold a majority

To keep this majority they are now in the process of revising the school board member districts so they can keep their power for a few more years longer. (board members are elected by geographic districts and not at large of the district)

Worse, they've been conditioned to take pride in people pointing out that they're the baddies.

Why do you think so much was poured into normalizing "stigginit" as a "legitimate political action"?

There's a whole bundle of terroristic acts that ring wingers will gleefully enact upon their chosen victims while congratulating themselves for successfully "triggering the libs" by doing so.

They now want to kill those not following their version of Christianity, political opponents like Democrats, LGBTQ+ adults and kids, POC, not just blacks. They even let their own die by not expanding Medicaid, loss of rural health clinics and hospitals, and their incompetent, criminal actions during the COVID-19 pandemic. We lost over one-million Americans to COVID. A lot of those who died where Republicans and Trumpers.

I don't know what a crypto-Jew is (maybe you have a conspiracy theory about Sam Bankman-Fried??).

But the various histories in the OT like: how humans were created either from clay or from the "rib" thing; that the Earth is a place of punishment for humans who were banished from Eden: that God's relationship with the Earth is explained in the Book of Job; that polluting the environment will lead to apoclyptic consequences (Isaiah)...those are all value-laden and part of every Christian sect's orthodoxy, even for Christians who do not read the Bible at all but rely on direct revelation (or don't even worship in a formal way).

"To make matters worse, at one school board meeting, an openly antisemitic man was allowed to make hateful comments about Jews. When I tried to get the board to stop him, they threatened to remove me."

Okay look.  It's a public meeting.  The First Amendment guarantees the right to speak at them to the politicians in question, subject to reasonable rules like time limits and so on.  The farking Nazis have the right to go to them in full-Nazi regalia and ask if anyone's seen Kyle.  The rest of us have the right to go to them and call them Nazis and call out their Nazi bullshiat.  Neither side has the right to go "I don't want to hear from Nazis" or "I don't want to hear from liberals" and then try to force the board to exclude the other side, and if the other side was excluded by the board, that'd be a free million dollar free speech lawsuit by the ACLU or the conservative version of the ACLU, perhaps even both.

I've had farking asshole public officials tell *me* that I'm not allowed to speak at public meetings and to argue they couldn't let me do something on public property because then they'd have to let the Nazis do it.  So let me tell you that while the Nazis can go burn in Hell, the public officials and assholes like the author who deny free speech can go burn in Hell next to the Nazis.

The answer to letting Nazis speak is to have a whole pile of voices speak up against the Nazi immediately afterwards and rip their bullshiat to shreds and to make their lives unpleasant so they crawl back under their rocks and die.

Neutrality in America isn't letting Nazis speak, it's staying silent when anyone challenges the right of another to speak and not speaking out when you hear someone lie.

I don't know if you could teach that without an entire course being dedicated to it, there's a lot going on there. However, I pretty much agree with your point. I always though Night and Maus didn't quite get the point across because in both cases it really kinda turns the perpetrators into abstract monsters rather than people doing evil.

Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland does not have this problem, but I'm not sure high school kids are quite prepared for that. Then again, maybe they need to be.
