Came here to literally say almost the same exact thing.  The GOP would absolutely tell him they will go back to paying his legal fees if he doesn't run 3rd party

My actual reasoning as to why he won't is related to that:

If Trump runs third party, the Republican will lose.
However, Trump will also lose.
Trump will not get into a race he knows he will lose.
He is a spiteful creature, but his spite serves his ego, not the other way around.
Trump will not risk his ego for spite.
