It will be interesting to see how they deal with that.
At least she's with Buckley now.

I really, really, really fell back in love with KOtH during COVID.  On my work from home days, one of the networks (IFC, CMT whomever) would run a 3-4 hour block in the afternoon and I'd watch it religiously.  what a genius show.

and my BIL had his medical residency about an our outside Austin.  He said it was like a real life Arlen.  He'd see groups of guys, 3-4, sometimes more, hanging outside their houses with a cooler full of beer.  He had this cherry 66 Mustang he'd sometimes wrench on.  Folks would come by, "how many horsies duzzat baby got in 'er?  You ever need new brakes, you let me know, my cousin over in McDingleberry can do them for a reasonable price. He don't do no contracts, but his handshake is all the contract you'll ever need, mister, I tellyawhut."

we went to visit him, and, damn if he wasn't telling the truth.  Arlen come to life.  ha.

on one hand, not exactly an essential character so i could imagine just re-voicing her.  on the other hand, some fans would have a huge problem with that and on the other other hand, Judge seems like the kind of guy that would acknowledge how she was important to the show.  so does Luanne check out in real/fake life, or do they conveniently say "she moved to Houston, we don't see her much anymore"?

but yeah.  Tom Petty is gone too, but they had a baby the last season.  prob best to just write them all out.  "Lucky, Luanne, and their baby moved to California...."

We need at least one episode devoted to Jeff Boomhauer, Texas Ranger.

It just occurred to me that even in sitcoms, most rednecks and hillbillies aren't at all conservative. King of the Hill, My Name is Earl, what have you. You can make fun of country folks and Southerners, but you just can't have angry racist transphobes as main characters. Conspiracy theorists make decent comic relief, though.

Rebooting King of the Hill to 2023 could simply mean the character doesn't exist, it doesn't have to mean we have the Hills from 1999 20 years later.

They didn't really reboot Beavis and Butthead by aging them in real time (well they did a few episodes like that)

I'm not saying it's a problem with these sitcoms, just that it isn't realistic. I'm fine with it not being realistic. I don't watch King of the Hill and assume it's an accurate portrayal of Texans. Likewise, I don't watch Brooklyn Nine Nine and assume it's an accurate portrayal of the NYPD. My point was that conservatives just aren't funny, because bigotry is only funny to bigots.

King of the Hill had one of the most satisfying finales of any TV show, animated or live, comedy or drama.

My favorite part of that episode is when Hank realizes that Bobby is winning all of his fights by kicking people in the balls, and everyone just understands without explanation THAT YOU CAN'T DO THAT!

I don't think there's an episode of KOTH that we watch that one or the other of us has to stop to catch our breath from laughing so hard.
Best one from last night, when Luanne gives birth:

Not as much as they used to be. The humor of making fun of conspiracy theorists came from their absurd beliefs and the silly things they did while acting on them. With QAnon becoming a significant voting block and people willing to raid the Capitol because of some non-existent voting fraud, they now don't seem so ridiculous or funny.

He almost didn't vote for Bush because he had a weak handshake.  There's no way he'd have been able to overlook trumps frequent infidelity, blatant lying, derogatory comments about veterans, or his NYC rich city slicker personal.  He'd have either not voted or wrote in someone else.

Yeah, true. It's definitely gotten less funny. But we can still make up really silly ones to make fun of them. We do it all the time here on Fark, and it gets plenty of sensible chuckles.

I mean, yeah, this is all kind of my point. Hank is not what most of us would consider to be an archetypal character, given he's at least somewhat liberal. There are basically no conservative protagonists in sitcoms--the closest we get is stuff like Archie Bunker, and they're generally foils to the more reasonable characters. No one is supposed to want to be Archie Bunker--he's comic relief. The comedy is about laughing at him, not with him.

One could argue that there are definitely bigots who laughed with him, but it's clear that the writers were not aiming for that. You can't have a bigot for a main character whose bigotry is normalized for laughs. If a character makes a racist comment, we laugh at them for being stupid and racist, not at Black people because we believe whatever awful thing was said about them is true.
