Not bad, on paper. Execution is critical, obviously, but putting Woman of Tomorrow on screen is intriguing.

2023-01-31 2:27:54 PM
The Authority seems like a really off the wall choice, but I guess if anyone can make a sentient, reality warping, space/time teleporting ship into an entertaining on screen character, it's probably Gunn.

Oh please give me Music Meister in film for Brave and the Bold. I would sell someone else's children to see the reaction to that.

Weirdly, I think Batfleck would play a dad who's a bit flummoxed by the fact that his son was raised to be a sociopath pretty well.

(DC content that's not part of the DCU will be labeled "Elseworlds.")

So they removed the E from 'DCEU' and gave it to the previous movies in the form of 'Elseworlds' (ie 'Star Wars Legends'). And I guess that makes it Detective Comics Universe, no 'cinematic' part of it?

And I guess that means animated shows are a part of the main DCU? I'm guessing Harley Quinn is out though as it's already got a full universe (future crossover?).

And I don't see Peacemaker. Why is there no Peacemaker S2? Are they still gonna make it and it just goes in the 'Elseworlds' folder?

So. With the end of the Snyderverse upon us:

It was an interesting run.

Man of Steel
Batman vs Superman
Original Suicide Squad
Wonder Woman
AuqaMan
Shazam
Bird of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn
Justice League
James Gunn's Suicide Squad
James Gunn's Peacemaker
Black Adam
Shazam 2
The Flash - Not out yet
Auguman 2 - not out yete
Blue Beetle- Not out yet
A bunch of other announce but not in production items.

STARTING with Damian Wayne is a big mistake.

I get them wanting to skip retreading Day 1.  Clearly they want an extended Superfamily, multiple Green Lanterns, probably Nightwing, and other mid-years stuff as a base.  But Damian involves too much backhistory.  They should have started with Tim Drake (and that allows for most of the rest too).  You could have even cast Tim diversely... his background doesn't have to be set in stone.

Maybe I just need more coffee, but that looked like a lot of meh. And I thought it was going to be a clean break but was he saying Shazam 2, Flash, and Blue Beetle were being carried forward as part of the canon world? Fark it, if anything I'm more confused than ever about just what the fark DC is doing.

2023-01-31 2:48:43 PM
This just looks like a bigger mess. This is not a reboot at all, it's just... more stuff.
What worked for Marvel was a through-line that united the characters. What's going to bring together Supergirl and Swamp Thing?

It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks that kindness is old-fashioned

So Man of Steel, basically.

2023-01-31 2:49:19 PM
It's an interesting choice, for sure.

My observations...

1) Who hurt James Gunn to make him choose Damien over Tim as Best Robin?

2) DC finally has a long-term plan for movies & TV

3) While I'm not opposed to The Authority, it does highlight one of the big issues with incorporating characters crucial to the various labels DC has acquired over the decades. Namely how to deal with the key archetype characters alongside DC's originals.

Examples...

-WildStorm: Apollo & Midnighter. Superman & Batman, but gay (NTTAWWT)
-Milestone: Icon. Superman but Black
-Fawcett: Captain Marvel. Superman but magical child

I do like the idea of using the live action actors to voice the animated characters.

Also, excited for Creature Commandos and Booster Gold

Now...

Whar Doom Patrol?
Whar Ted Kord?

I'd give man of steel a C-, simply because Cavill was the right actor, and there was one scene (when he first learns to fly) that gave a glimpse of what could have been with a better director and script (see him in the Enola Holmes movies and The Man From UNCLE). He also wasn't a bad adult Clark. Amy Adams was the best Lois we've gotten in live action.

Also, I like the idea of using the Elseworlds tag like this.

DC has done great with Elseworlds animation (can't wait for Doom That Came To Gotham). But let's get some live action adaptations of those stories going...

Gotham by Gaslight
Red Son
Speeding Bullet
In Darkest Knight
Generations
The Nail
And give us a got-dammed Kingdom Come movie or TV series...

Probably the only person around here who'd agree with you on WW2 there. There were admittedly weak points, but the general story, WW callbacks (mainly the depowered early 80s comic version and Linda Carter; less so the invisible jet), and versions of Maxwell Lord/Cheetah introduced were decent. The warning her friend about a predatory male blowing up in her face was all too relatable for some people.

Man of Steel

: D- There are good bits, but the message, tone and tenor of the whole thing is wrong.
Batman vs Superman: F Just about everything about this is wrong and bad, however Affleck is a fine batman.
Original Suicide Squad: F/INC : i am not convinced there's a completed film here.
Wonder Woman: B- The good bits are quite good; the romance works. The beginning and ending stumble.
AguaMan :B This was a pleasant surprise, if too long. It's more like 3 aquaman movies, but they're decent ones.
Shazam :A- Only the bizarrely rendered clay/smoke/mud monsters fail to deliver, the rest is delightful.
Bird of Prey and the Quinn :B+ This was another pleasant surprise, if a bit underwhelming and forgettable.
Justice League :F : Everything wrong with BvS is still wrong here; the jokey quips are forced and dumb.
James Gunn's Suicide Squad:A Spot on. Bravo.
James Gunn's Peacemaker : did not watch yet.
Black Adam
F : Eegad this was a pile of beaver squeezings.

I liked Man of Steel and most of WW (basically until the boss battle).  I watched about 75% of Aquaman before realizing putting myself through the last 25% just wasn't worth knowing how it ends. It may have been worse than Love and Thunder.

I know Harley Quinn already did it... But I wouldn't not laugh at someone doing a Batman movie with a time loop where Bruce has to go through that dozens of times.  Just for the meta-humor.

Ok, I wouldn't pay to see it, but I would laugh at its existence.

20 years from now ALL movies will be Batman and Superman reboots. There will be no other movies made but those.

Batman has been Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson..... and I'm probably missing some! And that's just on the silver screen, not even counting animated shows or appearances in other shows.

Superman has been Christopher Reeve, George Reeves, Brandon Routh, Dean Cain, Henry Cavill, Tom Welling - again, just in live action and I'm almost certainly missing a few.

It's not just going back to the well, it's like..... dropping a mattress down there and LIVING in the well.

I gave my rankings. Didn't even go into detail, and I enjoyed a few of them. It's got nothing to do with being 'edgy'. Snyder's JL was a 4-hour slog with some interesting moments, making it better than the initial attempt, but not by much. I enjoyed Steppenwolf throwing horses, that was new. And WW discovering the Darkseid murals was well done.

I want DC to consistently make good movies instead of a few highs and a bunch of deep drops. They've made the obscure work, yet have dropped the ball on the big names like Batman and Superman. I hope consistently good-to-great happens with Gunn at the forefront and a more cohesive vision. I'm not rooting for DC to fail.

And strange deflection to Marvel. The quality of Marvel after the Infinity Saga has jack-shiat to do with DCEU's movie line-up to date.  Marvel didn't do anything but have a coherent plan for at least 20+ movies. But just so you know, No Way Home was alright for the other Spidermen and Green Goblin/Doc Ock, and I thought Eternals blew ass and have not caught up on any of the movies since then because I'm kinda fatigued out after a decade with Marvel's first Saga.

I'm sorry I think movies you like suck.

There was a good iteration, I just cant remember what from. It was basically not showing the actual thing, but the after math: Bruce riding away in police car. A young detective Gordon at the crime scene shaking his head in disbelief. Alfred picking Bruce up from station, hugging him.

It may have been in a comic or some animated show. The problem is there have been so many takes I can't remember where I saw that one.
