An algorithm wants to tell me what news to read?

No thanks, I'd rather have my newsfeed personally curated by a high functioning alcoholic from Kentucky.

/love you, Drew

Article ghosts Fark.com. What's the author's Fark handle?

2023-01-31 2:51:16 PM
Ok, but only if we can continue to ignore the actual articles and just make jokes about the headlines!

2023-01-31 2:51:59 PM
Will people actually read the articles this time?

2023-01-31 2:52:26 PM
Outrageous!

Oh look Flipboard.

It'll never be successful. The owner will probably drink himself to death before he sees any good things come from it.

I want to tell them that I know this guy..well, I don't KNOW HIM know him, but he's like ... a friend of a friend... named Drew and he had an idea like this one time.

"...allow users to discuss articles they come across with friends. "

But his idea was far worse!

So let me get this straight. There's a website that links to other websites so people can read stories? And then, if they choose to, they can make comments about the stories they read. That sounds really farking stupid.

2023-01-31 2:56:39 PM
But as described, Artifact doesn't sound completely original...

Really?

2023-01-31 2:57:35 PM
So will there be a knobby knee Instagram tag section?

No they...

"...discuss articles they come across with friends. "

That's different.

They need an AI to write pithy and misleading self-referencial headlines or it will never work.

2023-01-31 3:00:04 PM
I just don't get it. Facebook already does this. Why fark up Instagram with news. I want to look at my friends pictures. End of farking story.

An app that will spoon feed everyone news articles that reconfirm their personal biases.

Sounds about right.

I like that Fark has user submitted articles, and mods decide if articles are greenlit or redlit.  It means I'll see articles I wouldn't see and expand my interests.  An algorithm based site can make it very easy to fall down a narrow echo chamber: If I click on a link about Tucker Carlson's latest garbage he spews, I'll be pummeled with similar junk from there on out without getting opposing view points.

As described, it sounds like a modern-day twist on Google Reader, a long-ago RSS newsreader app that Google shut down back in 2013. Except in this case, Artifact is described as a newsreader that uses machine learning to personalize the experience for the end user, while also adding social elements that allow users to discuss articles they come across with friends.

How is this different than Flipboard or any of the other (I'm assuming there are others) sh*tty newsreader apps that sometimes get preinstalled as bloatware on smartphones?  Hand-waving and casting the spell of statistics "machine learning" does not make your business novel, interesting, or important.

I preferred Facebook when there was no "featured content" which means the same ten friends' content shows up in my feed while the remaining 990 are ignored, resulting in said echo chamber. I wish when hitting "most recent" it would just stay that way, and not revert when the window is closed and re-opened.

This sounds like a fantastic idea, but they should focus on one segment of the news. Like politics. Nothing brings people together like politics. Guaranteed winner.
