the great King Kamehameha unified the Hawaiian islands during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Geeze, I wonder how he pulled that off.

Ethan Siegel is a FECKLESS SIMPLETON who should not be writing articles at all. He stunk up Forbes for years and now here he is again, like a white-racist version Neil Tyson.

I can't say I admire the fellow's work, but that seems extreme.

I forgot to save the meme someone posted of the "Libs! Libs! Libs!" straitjacket guy with Ethan's name written in.

Is this some kind of Frank Herbert reference?

It's a NES TMNT reference.

While the Giant Magellan Telescope and the European Extremely Large Telescope were both overwhelmingly supported by the indigenous population, Hawaii's proposed Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) - like many telescopes atop Mauna Kea before it - faced significant protests and opposition from native Hawaiians, who cited many concerns and injustices that dated back decades or even centuries.

I hate writing like this - it takes a singular ethnic group and portrays them as a monolith even though there is a wide diversity of opinion among native Hawaiians. You can't say native Hawaiians oppose it, and you can't say they are in favor of it, because both are roughly equally true.

Granted, how equally true fluctuates over time - at least earlier in the life of the project before that stupid message the article mentioned, a clear majority of native Hawaiians were in favor (at least according to a poll conducted by a local newspaper), and opposition was mainly a very vocal minority opinion.

One of the complaints was the mountains were where "Natives" communicated and got knowledge from the sky  "Gods"

Which sound like a perfect place for an Observatory. Completely in keeping with the 'mission statement'.

FTFA:What about the community of native Hawaiians? They got $1 per year: the cost of the State-ordered lease of the land.

Well, no.  When the State leases ceded crown lands, the revenue is divided a few ways.  The native Hawaiians -- or at least, programs to benefit them -- actually got 20¢ per year.

Other than that, not a bad article overall.  I could say -- and have said, other places, other times, repeatedly -- more, but it's pretty good.

/worked and volunteered up there for 12 years, and was involved with multiple programs he mentioned
//had a friend on that panel at AAS214,

I'm all for native rights, but here, they are fools. It not like the scientists want to drill for oil, or create an open pit mine. They are telescopes. They don't light pollute. Practically zero emissions. Little vehicle traffic. No noise. They might even supply a few jobs for locals.

They apparently believe that the mountain heights are where they can commune with their gods.

Blah blah blah blah blah

We live in the age of Kelo. If the land was in private hands the government can seize it and hand it over to private interests as long as it is put to more productive use. The land is already in government hands. This is just graft.

Why? Does God have short arms?

"What about all the other telescopes already built there?"
