(The Sun (Ireland))   Irish publicans on the verge of revolt against the government, say they may DITCH the black stuff if 'greedy' pint price hikes continue. Many want to throw in the Guinness towel as soon as its delivered from some guy named Drew in the states   (thesun.ie) divider line

Guinness is one of the very few beers I can drink without waking up with a screaming hangover that makes me want to curl up and die in a puddle of my own puke. And I'm talking one, not a case. Something in most beers kills me.

Doesn't sound like they are revolting against their government but at Guinness. If Guinness raise the cost 12 cents the pubs raise their prices by 50c?
TFA also says their electricity bills have doubled. We so will Guinness' electricity bills, hence the price rise. And why other brewers have raised their prices.

Whoa, so we may see the beginnings of the Irish Publican Army?  Wonder what sort of beer they'll be selling?

"...charging pubs an extra 12 cent a pint, forcing publicans to jack up prices by up to 50 cent just to keep their margins. "

So, 317% margins?

To be fair that has to pay for the pub, rent or mortgage, electricity, bar staff etc.

A missing apostrophe still looks stupid.

76% margin - 317% markup.  So, bars will make 38 cent more per pint and they get to blame Guinness.  Brilliant!

Well, the Irish are always blaming the English for something. Now they're blaming them for raising the price of Guinness.

Yes it's called the rules of thirds and it's how every bar or restaurant I've ever worked at comes up with their pricing.

The price of any given item:
One third pays the product
One third pays the staff
One third pays the overhead

IF they can get any of the actual numbers below 30% of revenue, that creates the profit. Average profit margins in a restaurant is 1- 5%. An amazingly run restaurant might get to 15% but then they're probably underpaying the staff or skimping on quality food.

I know this sounds stupid. It is stupid. But it's industry standard.

Last year this time beer prices rose a flat $1 on all 6 packs

They did it again this year

I switched to liquors and making cocktails at home since thier price has stayed the same
