It's a white people problem, even if the particular cops in this case were Black. Where I live indigenous Australians are overrepresented in those killed by police. In Canada indigenous Canadians experience the same. Police culture hasn't rebooted since the days of the Peelers in England and it's way overdue.

And cop cars must be recognizable. None of this black paint with POLICE in a different shade of black and lights as thick as a nano particle.

And regular people cannot paint their car the same color as the designated cop car color.

I found Colbert the character to be fatiguing.  I much prefer him now, but it's also worth pointing out, that old character just wouldn't play today.  He was a parody of a certain kind of self important conservative personality.  Like a Brit Hume or that fark wit Tony Snow.

And the moment Brit Hume became irrelevant, so did the Colbert satire.

You can't satirize the GOP today.  There's nothing more absurd than Jewish space lasers.

I think American policing culture would be improved if they adopted the Peelian principles.

We have radar cameras.  Red light cameras.  Soon autonomous traffic drones to record traffic infractions.

What's left are purposeful encounters with the police (enforcement of court orders, being called to a scene of a crime).  And then each police officer should be accompanied by a social worker and in come cases a psychologist.

Every sociopath police officer should be accompanied by a social worker and in come cases a psychologist at all times. It is how they could get some help. And it could be easily determined if they should be barred from being armed in a few interactions.

This is probably the biggest "catch-22" the right-wing could encounter with the murdering officers being black, because now they cannot obfuscate things using their usual canned talking points. The "what about the black on black violence in Chicago" is a moot point. This is not only systematic racism in the police force, it is black on black violence, and the left is not avoiding the fact that even black officers are not immune from it. Something the right passionately denies white officers are subject to.

It seems that the GOP are providing contrasts to the American people that do not reflect them in the best light. With the secret documents case about 60% of Americans feel Joe Biden is cooperating and doing as he should, while 60% feel Trump is obstructing and not cooperating. The Democratic House left being one of the most productive and functional House in modern history, even with record attempted GOP obstructionism; with little actual drama. Meanwhile the new GOP House showed dysfunction on day 1 and now are focusing on political revenge and weaponizing the House against Democratic members who stood up to Trump's crimes. Meanwhile the House GOP is ignoring immigration, inflation, and other issues they blamed on Democrats and said they would fix. A majority of Americans surveyed feel that the House GOP has their priorities wrong. Now with Tyre Nichols the Democrats are pulling out legislation the GOP successfully blocked, the George Floyd Policing Act, and the GOP are trying to explain "nothing can be done", further showing their fecklessness to the American electorate.

There was 10 officers on the scene, only the 5 black ones are the ones fired and charged. There was a fireman at the scene, he didn't render aid either. It took paramedics, and then they parked the ambulance juuuuusstt so, or the cops with cameras went and made sure they wouldn't see.

Its not a problem with the officers being black, as they only got fired because they were black. I guarantee if they would have been white, footage would be lost.

But we haven't done any real reform since we stopped calling them "slave catchers".

Most Americans - the vast majority of white people - do not see police beating, oppressing, or murdering Black people as a problem. They think that's just how things should be. That's why there's never an option to vote for anything different. That's why pro-police-violence politician Joe Biden is president.

Actually done good ideas in this thread.

I liked the idea of separating traffic enforcement from the police.  Most of that process can be done without any human interaction anymore.

Will that be harder to catch people driving without a license or insurance?  Yeah, but figure it out. It's better than people fleeing because they think they're going to jail and then dying at the hands of a shiatty cop.

Why doesn't anything get done?  Rodney King'S attackers didn't go to jail.  There have been a ton of these that ended up not being prosecuted.

And how many have been convicted last few years?

in addition to much more rigorous mental health screening during the hiring process, I honestly think this all comes down to training. Not individual training of officers, but of a decades-long, systemic training doctrine that teaches officers not that "any confrontation can turn deadly" but that "every confrontation will turn deadly". All cops should carry guns, because it's possible that any driver could also be carrying a gun. We're one of the only countries where that's the case. But we need to stop pre-installing PTSD in officers. They need to know how to handle violence once it escalates. But they shouldn't be the one shouting obscenites at a car they just stopped. The so-called "felony stop" where they remove the person at gunpoint should be the exception, not the rule.

You see hundreds of videos where 6 cops are on top of a guy while they cuff him, all shouting "STOP RESISTING". I guarantee if you tried to cuff my hands behind my back, I would comply immediately, but that wouldn't make me any more flexible than I am right now. So it would absolutely look like I was resisting. If you have 6 cops on you, you're not going anywhere. Cops need to learn how to deescalate once they know they have the situation under control. There's just no easy over-pressure valve for that kind of aggression.
