We're going to have two cold days, then temps back in the 40s and 50s here in the Boston area.  I am mentally preparing to be covered in ticks this year.
That also reminds me to reset the mouse traps this weekend.

It hasn't even been below freezing during most days this winter in Vermont.

South carolina here. If i was anal about my lawn i'd be cutting it before the weekend. I won't be surprised if my king of the hill-ish neighbor almost lives on his mower this summer.

Field mice have been a problem on our property since 2001. Every winter, droves of them.

In 2020 during lockdown we were overrun by rats. Nothing at Home Depot worked. Then I was told that farmers have a whole higher level of weapons. I bought a bucket of farmer-grade poison chunks. Threw a few in basement corners and under crawl spaces. The rats disappeared, found three victims.

And incidentally have not seen a field mouse since. No more traps needed.

Inevitable moronic headline at the bottom of TFA:  "Does the polar vortex mean climate change isn't a problem?"

And two days of seasonally appropriate weather is all anyone will remember and not weeks and weeks of green grass in January in Southern Ontario.

It's why we're sooooo boned.

You hit a nerve. I love cats and dogs. A perfect household would have two of each. Wife is allergic to cat dander.

I grew up with cats. Yup. No mice.

It's -10C in the outskirts of Bumf**k Ontario this morning which is old skool average.
It's going to be -25C Thurs night - which is a tad nippy.

After several weeks of mild weather we're having a bit of freezing rain here in Austin. It's not that cold, really, just a bit below freezing, but we're not set up for this sort of thing. Crashes, icy overpasses, etc.

And subby is an example of that. A couple of days of crappy winter weather is scary, no it's winter.

Tom Marvolo Bombadil: Wake me up when it gets to "kick in the dick" cold.

-11 in St.Paul, MN...  that's not too bad. Thursday however-

a shortwave trough will move across Canada and swing a trailing cold front through the region. This will give us a glancing blow of arctic air, with temperatures falling during the day on Thursday, and going below zero Thursday night into Friday morning. It's a good thing this isn't a direct hit, because the heart of this cold air has H850 temperatures less than -40 degrees across southeast Canada... But for us, based on the current forecast, expect just another round of wind chill advisories to be issued during this time frame as surface temperatures drop into the teens below zero again...

-40 is pretty rough.

Looks like New England is in for it, too.  Wind chills of -25 to -35 F on Friday night.

Ah well, not like I wanted to do anything that night anyway.

Supposed to be -28F Saturday here.  Which is about right for our low.  Almost the same week as last year when it was -36.9F.

F*ck cats. This is what you need for rats.

My recording thermometer on the shady north side of my house recorded -13C (+9F) as the coldest temperature so far since Oct 1.  On one night.

I'm in rural Eastern Ontario, halfway between Toronto and Ottawa and I can tell you that this is unprecedented warmth.  A couple of nights of -30C (-22F) isn't going to alter the overall average temperature very much...

Here in WNY we're dealing with a squirrel infestation in our attic. Those farkers should've been nested a long time ago. Instead because of the nice weather, they decided to shop around and appreciated our set up the most, I guess. Working with a trapping company- one down, ? to go.

Twenty below celsius for a couple of days you say? Meh. ... I've lived with -30 throughout the month of February in Montreal a few years ago, so bring it on.

Yet here in Utah, we've had a nice water winter, but it's stayed so cold, I think it's only completely melted once. And this morning, it was - 1 when I got up. Usually, we get down into the teens for a week or so this time of year, but this year, it's been the whole winter. It's been nice!

We shouldn't still be in mud season in January :(

I've noticed the last few years that the seasons seem to have shifted...like they start and finish a month later than they used to. Last October (2022), it was 14C on the 23rd. I distinctly remember taking my brother trick-or-treating in a blizzard years ago, and it was always at least cold if not snowing on Halloween.

We haven't had a strictly "snow" storm this winter.  Every significant snowfall has included ice pellets or freezing rain.  Mr. Plow has been to my place 8 times this winter, and 3 of those the "snow" had so much water mixed in he didn't even try to put it through the snow blower - just used the blade.

No rats thankfully.  I have cage traps for the mice and let them go across town at a park.  Used to set out poison and the smell was awful, one died on top of a heat vent.
Twice a year is all it takes, spring and fall.
