Tonight is Point in time (PIT) count is tonight for the unhoused. Make sure you get counted and if in a reasonable state and county offered assistance for shelter and/or housing.  Apply for anything you may qualify for.

There is no solution for homelessness that doesn't involve the Federal Government trying to fix the problem.  They are the only entity in this country with the spending power to address the problem.

Carrying a knife might be a crime, I don't know, so do like the Hells Angels do and carry a hammer. No law against carrying a hammer and a hammer will f*ck someone up if it goes down.

I appreciate you. What sucks is that I live in a small mountain town with hardly any resources and my kid lives here. She's 9 and I can't imagine going 3 or 4 hours away to a bigger city. I have to hang around for her. I have about $400 left from the business I used to own, but gave to my ex-wife, like an idiot. I have my motel room for another 2 or 3 nights before I hit the road. I feel like nothing is going my way.  So, I reach out to my favorite community of farkers for advice. Thank you again.

Join one of those $10/month gyms. You can shiat/shower/shave, spend hours in the company of non-judgmental people, and there's often free Wi-Fi. There's also free well-light parking, if you're sleeping in your car. More often than not, they'll be located in safe suburban strip malls.

Heh, true. I actually do carry a fork. And a spoon. And a butter knife because you never know when pancakes may happen.

Try to get an emergency job at a restaurant, dishwashers are frequently in high demand and can get meals and tips right away.

Do what it takes to get by. I had a $200,000 a year job and my wife and I divorced, and I gave her my half of the business so I wouldn't have to pay child support. Dumb on my part, she really farked me over

I spent a couple of months broke, friendless, and on the streets once, long ago. Maybe my situation was different, but here's what I learned:

Be respectful to the other homeless folks. They're no better or worse than you. If you remember that and treat them accordingly, you'll get along.

Sleep with your feet up when you can. Sleeping sitting up farks up your legs.

Bathing and shaving once in a while makes you feel human. Never pass up a chance.

Let people know you appreciate any kindness they show you. You need help, so don't scorn it. Also, remember that once you're back on your feet and see somebody else who needs a hand.

Check if there is a cold weather network they can give hotel vouchers or access to shelter. If there is one in the area of a mountain town it may be much nicer than you are thinking. I know a shelter in a mountain town that has individual rooms and good meals run by a good human. The shelters in large cities are generally a whole different thing. See if there is a homeless navigator in your area. They will have access to assistance  you don't know about. Have an email you can access because email is much more likely to get responses for requests than a voicemail.

You can eat for a long time on a few bucks worth of rice and spices. It sucks, but I did get through a month of waiting on a student loan doing this. I also took lemon wedges from a self-serve at Wendy's for the vitamins/spice on rice. Snag a salt and pepper shaker too.

Heinz 57 makes a lot of stuff taste like something.

I agree. Ever since I was a kid my heart went out to people who didn't have a home. I used to go to homeless shelters in Albuquerque and volunteer my time feeding everyone. There were hundreds of people that would come in to eat. That is a human connection I'll never forget because so many were respectful and grateful just to sit down for a meal. I got a lot of thank you.

You're right. Living in a small mountain town, there sure are a lot of churches. I see them sometimes having a community meal. Perhaps I can befriend some of these generous people, and find out what's available.

I was homeless for about 100 days, about 10 years ago.  This is gonna suck for you.  You are, however, going to get through it.

1) I get that you don't want to move away, and frankly, you don't have the cash to do so anyway.
2) Take stock of what you have
3) Find a warm spot (for me it was finding a cool spot) to sleep.  Tell no one where it is.
4) Find a source of food
5) Is there a library near you?  That's where you're gonna be hanging out for a while.  Use the computers there to apply for jobs
6) Send me your contact information to kudayta at gmail.com, I can help a bit.

Saw your bio says New Mexico, kind of a long-ish shot, but Wildfire Firefighter crews are getting put together and they are all temporary/emergency based work, and hiring starts in Feb/March.

Also, you can apply for unemployment even if it was your own business if you were ever a W2 employee, if not, you still might be eligible.

This is a great time of year to work for the service industry, college kids are going / have gone back to school, so jobs are open at the minimum wage level, might want to work with an actual recruiter/job office to see what your options are as well.

That's a really good point. Food can be expensive. A $25 car cigarette plug inverter will power a crock pot in which you can cook 2lbs of beans and a batch of rice. Garlic salt, a can of tomato sauce, and some hot sauce, and you have high quality food for a week for under $10

You've given help without judging. Take help without judging yourself or feeling judged by anyone.

Forgive yourself for messing up the divorce settlement or anything else you may have done. A. What's done is done, B. You are going to need your full mental facilities to get through this.

Other people have more practical advice. See what works for you. There are a lot of good people out there.

Good luck and God bless.

Public libraries are fantastic 'safe' zones. From washing up / shaving in the bathrooms, to using their internet / computers to try and find work.

Here in Maine, there's is insane demand for substitute teachers, at $100 per day. You just have to have two years of college (for Maine).

Check to see if there's a need for substitute teachers; you might be working as soon as tomorrow.

Also, if you have friends, now is the time to reach out. Doesn't matter your past, now is the time to try and use any and all of your network to try and assist.

Former Albuquerque resident here. So help me, if I was still there, you'd have a couch to crash on.

My EIP is my profile. So help me, there have been some times where I honestly should have been or could been homeless when I was going through the worst of my addiction issues. I know a few that went that way & I did my best to shelter others because I know damn good and well I could have been there.

Feel free to email me. I don't know what I can do, but I will help however I can.

Stay hydrated.
Carry spare socks in a zip lock.
Wash them in a rest room sink, carry them out in the bag,
Wring and dry elsewhere, then swap them out with the ones on your feet.
Remember to brush
That cost me when I was homeless.
Find cheap buffets.
Again with the zip locks
Hate to say it, but the Baptist church in the abq might be able to steer you to resources

It was 2002-03 when I lived there so I couldn't speak to where to go these days, but if memory serves me right, if you can go north and east out by Tramway, I seem to recall that area is pretty nice. South by the airport was rough if I recall as was the west side by Coors.

Regarding resources, now that I really couldn't speak to, but I do work with insurance agents in Albuquerque almost daily. When I talk to them this week, I can ask if they know any additional resources that can help.

It's all good. Your advice is valuable. I'd rather strike an attacker with a hammer than a knife. Freaks me out, jabbing someone with a knife. I'd rather knock them upside the head than push a knife into someone.

Consider getting a planet fitness / similarly inexpensive gym membership. That will get you several of the most important benefits of a hotel room (e.g., a shower, towels, easy source of water, climate control, etc) for $20 a month rather than $80 a night.  Also gives you something to do.

For what it's worth here is the city's website on services for those experiencing homelessness: https://www.cabq.gov/family/services/homeless-services#safe-outdoor-spaces it includes a couple of safe outdoor spaces. Also looks like the Gibson Health center is a good option for services.

When you panhandle enough for a coffee, get a "10 and 10".  This is what I've witnessed homeless folks do (in fact, I have paid for the coffee).

A "10 and 10" is 10 creams and 10 sugars.  For some, it's their meal for the day.

I agree with greynight above.  The main issue with homelessness is that it's compartmentalized so that we can pretend it doesn't exist.  The first thing I would do as King is start a national database with every homeless person registered and imaged.

Don't act crazy.

No matter how bad you feel keep yourself together.

You do not want to be on cops' and neighbors radar as The Crazy Guy. No one helps The Crazy Guy, he's seen as a threat and people want him locked up or gone.

"Traveled" for 4 years when I was booted out after high school.

Food: we had some good luck asking at service stations that had bagels and whatnot when they were going to throw them away, plus they have condiments usually. Target had these giant lawn and leaf bags packed with potato chips type food that were 1 day expired. Hopefully the dumpsters are as accessible as they were 30 years ago. I don't know if you can link sites on fark, but I googled "soup kitchens Albuquerque" and found a bunch.

They didn't have them at the time but I second the 24-hour gyms; looks like a fair number in Albuquerque. Good for showers and taking up the endless hours and if you plod along a treadmill watching tv at 1mph, they can't say boo. Lay on a yoga mat and if anyone asks, tell them you're meditating doing a corpse pose. Put your phone on some new age music for bonus ambience.
