I'm both boring and old. I don't have any passions other than reading snarky news headlines on news aggregator sites. Probably explains why I've been here two decades now.

Just passed that milestone here.
I'm oddly passionate about enabling electronic trading relationships via the ANSI X12 standard. Not something I would think I would say at any age, but it's true.
Still quite interested in the nape of my wife's neck as well- I feel like the nape is too often overlooked.
Way more into having a dog than I expected to- and he's no Rin-Tin-Tin by any means.

Don't know if passionate is the right word, but rediscovering photography at age 60 has helped keep me somewhat less insane than I might otherwise have been.

I tend to defend my "lack of f*ck-donation" by saying that passion tends to cloud the judgement.  Better cool disinterest than fiery prejudicial action.

I am passionate about my coffee art.  Every morning there's two cups of dregs resulting in a revelation that lets me start my day with something that I (and no one else) has ever seen before, on earth, ever.
If there was a bourbon art, I'd end my day similarly.  Alas, tomorrow awaits and gives me joy.  For tomorrow, I get to see something I've never seen before!

About 5 years ago, while I was working at a big-box craft store, the itch to make jewelry started, out of the blue. No history of crafting in my family - all intellectual work and intellectual play. I can geek out with fellow hobbyists for hours talking about stuff nobody else gives a shiat about.

My techniques to date are very basic, but I've created pieces that people have bought.  And I've created one set, shown below, that is better than anything else I've done.

Old sewing machines! I got into sewing because I think old sewing machines are beautiful works of mechanical art. And eventually I wanted to be able to use them to actually make things.

This is Miss Hannah, the machine that got me into this. It was a decoration in the living room for years until I oiled it, belted it, and found out that it had been in perfect working order the whole time. It's named after my great-grandmother, the presumed original owner. (It was made the year she got married, so we figured it was a wedding present.)
In this picture, Miss Hannah is repairing the pocket on my warmest coat.

This beat-up machine is Eulalie. When I moved, I couldn't take the machine with me because my small car doesn't hold large tables with sewing machines in them. So my first treadle remained at my parents'. Eulalie here was a gift from my SO, who sent the money and said to go get it.

This one is Geraldine. I took this one from my grandmother's house when we cleared it out after she died. It's been annoyingly finicky and keeps not quite working right. It drives me nuts. People online keep gushing about how this was one of the best Singers ever made, and I keep looking at mine like "... What's your damn problem?" (With bonus fan that I really like)
Fark user imageView Full Size

This is Sweet Lorraine. This is the first machine I got when I moved out of my parents' because, well, Miss Hannah was the only machine I had. You can't fit a cast iron treadle in my car. I wanted one like my other great-grandmother had, and it turns out that there are tons of this make/model out there. (It's named after said great-grandmother, and also "Sweet Lorraine" is the name of a jazz standard.) They're not collectible, so I got it for shockingly little money. Right now we're rewiring it (the original 1939 wires were crumbly), but when it works it's the smoothest, easiest, most steadfast machine I have ever used.

You can see this kind of cable running along part of the back edge of the table. That's part of the mechanism that raises the machine. You know how with a lot of table-mounted sewing machines, you have to grab the machine and pull it up from under the table? Well, that cable connects the table's lid to the machine. So when you open the table lid, the machine rises up. I have to imagine that seeing the machine practically levitate into place when the salesman raised the table lid helped sell these machines.

Piano. I wish I had started when I was young. Or even when I was 50. I wish I'd had the resources either of those times that i have now.

I now know what I want to do with the rest of my life, now that it's pretty much over. But far better late than never. I am now starting to see different skills converge and combine, and where it used to take weeks of painfully slow work just to play a tune in a basic way, I can now work for a couple of hours and play it pretty creditably. There are times when I ask myself, wait...how did my fingers know to do that? I didn't give that command. The skills are becoming unconscious.

I've never known any sensation like the one I get when I run through a new song the first time without any mistakes, except for the sensation when I start riffing and altering, because I know I can do better than the basic version.

I'm also mentally working on an idea for a novel that is far more finished and workable than any previous idea I've ever had. It kind of seems like I was designed to be a very late bloomer, like an autumn flower that blooms on the day of the first heavy snowfall.

I'll share something you don't have to get off your ancient ass to indulge in.  Obscure but good tv shows.

Almighty Johnsons - A Kiwi show about the Norse gods incarnated as mortals (with minor powers) in NZ

Better off Ted - A lot of Farkers already know this one but it's a great office comedy that a lot of people skipped over.  It's actually surprising how many people never even heard of it.

Defying Gravity - Astronauts on an international spacecraft traveling through the solar system.  The story and acting are well worth several seasons but the bastards at Fox canceled it after 1 season on a cliffhanger.  Some shows are worth watching even if they leave you in suspense forever. This is one.  Actually I'll probably rewatch it this weekend because I just realized it's been a couple years.

I'll probably mention more as I think about it.

Start passing on the knowledge and wisdom you've acquired over the past 5 decades.  Especially when the youngers don't appreciate it.

Get an AARP card.

Forgive someone that wronged you.

If the parents are still around, spend time with them, you'll have precious few of those left.

Invest in some decent muscle and joint relief cream.  And a heat pad.

I obsessively collected every D&D Endless Quest book in the series. Shown are a full set of Series 1, Series 2, and Super Endless Quest books ALL with the original bookmarks. Next up, I plan to acquire the Marvel 1 on 1, Crimson Crystal, Fantasy Forest, and Heart Quest series produced by TSR back in the day.

I have a decent heat pad, but what really good muscle relief cream would you recommend? I guess I never thought about using something like that when my back goes "PLOINK!" (You know the one, when you get that back pain for seemingly no reason, it sticks around for a few days, then one day goes away also for no reason.)

This is like a recipe from the 60s.

My new sort of passion is bourbon.  I try to pick up a different bottle/brand every few weeks.  I'm no expert or bourbon snob purist. I just like the taste and {gasp}, I like it on the rocks.
