Ehh...nobody disputes that Les Claypool is a great bassist, but Primus' songs are terrible. I know that's the joke, but I find Primus to be unlistenable noodling all for the sake of noodling.

In terms of overall technical talent, Claypool wins going away. But if I'm starting a band & I want someone to hold down the groove or enhance the melodies, I'll take John Paul Jones and McCartney every time.

paul inverted roots in a way rock/beat band bassists hadn't, and he made countermelodies instead of just hammering root-fives. he also wrote some novel modulations that became bedrocks of pop songwriting afterwards. even other giants like elton john and billy joel owe the man their careers for his musical inventions. actual genius.

I might put Sting and Waters up with Paul based upon their contributions to music.

Tom Gray (The Country Gentlemen and The Seldom Scene) was the same.

One thing I'll say about the Rock Band games is you start to learn a lot more about what's going on in songs when you're paying attention to your part.  What I'll say as a viola player who's used to playing harmony and rhythm parts, Sir Paul's playing has a great flow to it. Logical, melodic but still doing its job.  It'd be easy to not notice if you aren't looking for it.

I mean, that's why Claypool had to team up with a Beatles scion to finally have a project that writes actual songs (The Lennon Claypool Delirium).

Look up McCartney's isolated bass lines, and you will hear what an inventive player he is. He comes out of the James Jamerson school; listen to his isolated track and you wouldn't even know what song it is, even though you've heard it 1,000 times. But damn if it doesn't create an essential building block of the song.

Yes, I know some moron will cite Daytripper or Taxman in an attempt to make a contrarian point. Don't bother, moron.

This is especially true playing Rocksmith. Started learning bass partially using this and you get a better understanding of how the bass is used in compositions. I have a few Beatles songs I got from Custom Forge and they are fun to play on Rocksmith.

Earth, Wind & Fire's Verdine White does it for me.

Contemporary popular music has replaced a a human being with sensibility, the bass player, with an out-of-balance washing machine: thud...thudthudthud.

I get the appeal: that's one less dude to pay, plus a Whirlpool knows its place in the mix, never has a really cool idea, and as a bonus you get clean clothes at the end. A tidy bit of multitasking, if you ask me.

None of these things are guaranteed if you have a Paul McCartney in the studio.

So many great McCartney bass lines to choose from, but this one has to be among his very best. Such an inventive counter melody that still serves the song well.

I don't know how you say any one person is the "best", there's way too many different types of bass playing to make a stand on any one person. I really like Jaco, and for fusion-type music he is way up there. I also really like Stanley Clarke, Les Claypool,Charles Mingus and Chris Squire. I would say they are all of those guys could be considered the best bassist for their type of music.

Paul McCartney was the best bass player the Beatles could have ever had.

Why wouldn't we at least listen to his opinion? He's an iconic record producer who has worked with dozens of artists in several different genres. It's not like he's speaking out of turn.
