More specifically, the drawing of a man in a pit woman on the ground to make the fight more fair.

Judging from the illustrations, the man is only allowed to go for crotch shots.

There's TONS of fun stuff in the 1459 Thott edition.     Ol' Hans was looking to rival da Vinci in the "I'm a military mastermind, hire me!" tradition.

Okay. Isn't this trial by combat between spouses? Like, this is how domestic disputes got settled centuries ago.

Yes, for a short time in a small area of pre-Maury Germany.

Are we sure this guy didn't just stumble upon a medieval version of MAD Magazine, and the drawings he's taking so seriously are actually some cartoonist taking the piss?

Who'd have thunk a 90's talk show would be so influential on German history!

Phil: Besides, Ted could bring us a lot of street crud.
Lem: It's street cred. You know, "credibility"?
Phil: Oh, that finally makes sense.

This was probably much hyped but rarely invoked in practice. Ben if it was used, it looks like the chance of serious injury was probably fairly low. Kind of like the Peruvian fistfight festival.

This was actually a dickweed "rules lawyer" move for a judicial duel. Duel rules said you start with a thrown weapon (spears), then move to longswords (which you can't really hurt each other with much unless you use as a short spear (halfswording)), and then if shiat gets tight you go to daggers.

The dick on the left has pulled the pommel off of his sword to throw it so that it "counts" as a thrown weapon and he can keep his (useful) spear in place of his (not as efficient, can't really cut plate) longsword.

History does not record what the judges thought of this (dickweed) move.

Judicial combat between men and women wasn't limited to divorce which would have been problematic in Catholic lands anyway. There are also specific arms and armor for combatants of different classes
