In a way, yes.

The Republicans only tried to overthrow American democracy.

Tiktok can disrupt democracy everywhere. Every second of screen time that you spend on an app is a second that the app's creators have enormous power over your mind. They can control what you see, think, feel, behave, and act. They can manipulate you into knowing only certain things about certain topics, and then acting upon that misunderstanding, causing chaos, subterfuge, disruption.

We have to remind ourselves that this Internet -- this glorious two way communications medium -- is a double edged sword. Yes, it allows us old farts to connect with each other on Fark, which is harmless enough. But it also allows bad people to connect with their victims.

Especially state actors who find it politically expedient to sow civil unrest in other countries. And if you don't think this could happen, it already did. What do you think 2016 was actually about?

My Twitter and TikTok has interesting people. Plenty of bad actors manipulate the algorithms but if you make an effort you, too, can enjoy history and science lessons, Rabbis debating whether vampires can be kosher, and other fascinating stuff. It doesn't have to be garbage.
