Possibly one of the biggest blunders in a playoff game. Ever.

He wanted Mahomes to go backward, so he pushed him from behind?

What are the physics in Ossai's world?

Brandon Bostick's onside kick recovery attempt during the Packers-Seahawks NFC championship game was way worse, for example.

At the end of a game, to decide who goes to the Super Bowl... running at full speed, doing whatever he could to stop Mahomes from gaining yards... yeah, it happened.  Yes, it was a penalty since Mahomes was clearly out of bound, but shiat happens in the heat and emotion of such a big moment.  Learn from it and do better next year.

All but handing the other team the win in regulation REALLY hurts your chances of winning in overtime.  Not sure anyone thinks it was a lock, but you have a 0% chance if you never get to overtime.

The amount of sh*t this guy is getting is obscene. You want to argue reality? The refs screwed Cinci umpteen different ways to even get the game to that point where this late hit mattered. You want to ignore the reality of the refs? Cinci had plenty of opportunities that they themselves squandered. You need to win a game with no doubt, just like how in MMA they say never to leave it up to the judges because you just don't know. Ossai left it up to the refs, on a night where there was no way in hell that the refs would make the right call.

He's 22.  Next year he could make the play that sends them to the Super Bowl.

Best in this World: Ossai left it up to the refs committed a clear penalty at a horrible time in the game.

Credit to Ossai and the Bengals for not putting this on the ref. He knows he farked up. The coach knows he farked up. Better luck next year. Maybe shore-up that offensive line.

2023-01-30 10:04:58 AM
That play wasn't so bad. It's not like he went with a pass play in the red zone instead of handing the ball off to Marshawn Lynch.

2023-01-30 10:14:10 AM
Maybe the Bengals getting 0 yards of offense in the first quarter might've played a part, too.

2023-01-30 10:23:03 AM
I didn't watch the game, but wasn't there a farking 30-yard punt return on the previous play?  Maybe that's your big blunder right there, and the entire defense at fault?  Huh? Maybe?

It's not even the biggest blunder in Bengals playoff history.

Remember the Bengals Steelers playoff game?  I think it was the last game the Steelers won in the playoffs.  2016 IIRC.

Steelers/Bengals got into a bit of a scum and Joey Porter came off the sideline to yell at someone and a Bengals player decided it would be a cool idea to shove Joey Porter to the ground, getting a 15 yard penalty and putting the Steelers in field goal range?

Good times.

Joey Porter was a bit of a dick and it ultimately got him fired but it was still a monumentally boneheaded play by the Bengals.

You know, it wouldn't have mattered if the Refs called one of the three holds that allowed the play to happen.

Or the block in the back that allowed the kickoff return.

I could go on for a while.

The last Steelers playoff win was against the Chiefs in the 2016 season playoffs. Hard to believe it has been that long.

Ah, yes, I forgot about the asshat known as Burfict nearly decapitating Antonio Brown right before that which is what led to the scrum and people coming off the bench in the first place.

It's a tough needle to thread. If you let up, maybe he sneaks by you and picks up another 10 yards. Don't let up, and you risk a penalty. Hard to stop all that momentum on a dime. But it was clearly a penalty.

That wasn't a playoff game. However, it was a Thanksgiving Evening game, the first that was broadcast on National TV (instead of NFL Network exclusively), between two rivals, and had no other competing game. Hence, it probably felt like a playoff game.

Were the refs abysmal? Yes.

Did the Bengals miss some opportunities? Yes.

Doesn't change the fact that this dude made an absurdly bad decision at the absolute worst time, which directly put KC in position to easily win the game and send the Bengals home. That's the point people are making, and doing so isn't ignoring the rest of the game. Not sure why people think it is.

2023-01-30 12:02:02 PM
I hate it when people blame the refs. Every single ref in the league misses multiple calls during a season for (a) offensive holding, (b) defensive holding, (c) OPI, (d) DPI, (e) false start...etc etc etc. And yes, this season every ref made at least one shiatty roughing the passer call. But for god's sake stop this nonsense that the refs are (a) paid off, (b) biased, or (c) conspiratorial. Unless you have sat in the production booth for minimum 10 games and watched all...what, like 10 cameras during each play, you can't make any statements. Poor officiating is a thing, yes. But biatching about it is futile. If you think officials should be perfect and infallible, good luck enjoying the games.

This officiating team seems to have a bad rep.  When they announced the ref team lineups for the playoffs, several people on Twitter were complaining about this particular crew.

My brother is convinced that the NFL is rigged and that they pay the officials to call games certain ways to get a narrative - like now the Kelce brothers can play against each other in the Super Bowl, etc.  I think you just have good crews and bad crews, and with so many games coming down to just a handful of plays, it's easy for one missed call or one bad call to sway the outcome.

I think this particular call was correct, but there were some others that were questionable earlier in the game

Uh huh. Okay. Sure.

For an exercise, Mr. Simmons, replace "Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs" with "Tom Brady and the Patriots" in that exact same scenario. I'm curious what your reaction would be.

No witty obscure 80's reference? You're slipping Bill.

2023-01-30 12:33:33 PM
Between the bad calls and the reach review the Refs should have just slipped on a red jersey. It  ain't the goaline, you reach forward but then pull the ball back yourself you don't get that forward progress. Just like when a WR goes backwards to loop around a defender, you go backwards on your own No forward progress.

2023-01-30 12:39:07 PM
Nobody, and I mean nobody is even mentioning the one play that led to the Ossai penalty.

The punt by the Bengals should have been angled to go out of bounds and not give the Chiefs a chance for a return. Earlier this season, the Jets learned the hard way that a punt late in the game could be returned for a TD.

Coaches at all levels of the game have forgotten the art of kicking for the coffin corner or angling the kick to ensure less of a chance for a return.

He made one mistake...unfortunately, at the very end of the game when it was very visible.
What about every single other mistake made during the game by everyone else.... (including multiple picks, and God-knows-F-all sacks allowed).

This one play is NOT why "who Dey?" ain't going to Vegas in a couple weeks.
