To be fair, they never really wanted him, because a gay immigrant has been what they've been fighting, but it was Queens, and he looked like the best shot for getting that sweet, sweet, sweet secure vote. The attention he's been getting, and the possible ties that could get unearthed on HOW he got all that filthy lucre to get elected might come to light too. Best hand it to a party loyalist, who will limit exposure, but still kind of pull back the curtain a bit enough to get someone else in who won't rock the boat so much.

Maybe NY should pass a f*cking law on recall elections? Ya think? Maybe?

Yeah, those corrupt assholes in Albany? LOL oh wow

They don't really have any options, Subby. Either he steps down, or the House boots him, and neither seems really likely to succeed. Their remaining option is to wait for '24 and primary him, but that might fail (And it's still 18+ months off).

Doesn't matter, the party is full to brim with people just like Santos. Get rid of him, two more will take his place.

No state can recall congressfolk as far as I know.

Santos is finishing his term, and will run for reelection as the incumbent.

Take your hatred. Strike him down with it. Then your journey towards the dark side will be complete.

The Republicans could have vetted him long before the election. They chose not to because Party Uber Alles. Democrats are under no obligation to help expel a member of the Garbage Caucus.

Have the party censure him and strip him of all committee spots unilaterally and then we can talk about bipartisan votes.

Meanwhile, the damage to conservatism as a whole just keeps getting worse.
You know what's interesting? Despite the conservatives screaming lies and doubling down on being assholes to everyone, they're not moving the dial on public opinion anymore. Nobody is listening to anything republicans say.

The framers of the Constitution actually debated whether to include a recall provision but decided against it as a result of the arguments of some state legislators during the ratification process. A Congressional Research Service report cited Luther Martin of Maryland who, while speaking to the state Legislature, lamented the fact that members of Congress "are to pay themselves, out of the treasury of the United States; and are not liable to be recalled during the period for which they are chosen." There were failed attempts in some states, including New York, to amend the Constitution and add a recall mechanism.

Let's not pretend that it's a foreign idea here... They knew it was a flaw and there were attempts to address it, but like most things, politicians love to protect themselves.

It's unconstitutional even for future elections.  Federal offices are governed by federal laws.  and there is no federal recall law because the Constitution does not allow for it.  Or rather, impeachment for the Executive and Judicial branches, and expulsion for the Legislative are what would be the equivalent of a recall effort

I know I'm responding to the resident idiot of politics threads, but states do not have the constitutional authority to setup recall elections for someone federally elected.

States can do that for a STATE house member, a STATE senator, or the governor... but not a house of representatives member.

Only three things can kick out a house member:
A) Being expelled by the House (I'm guessing 2/3 or 3/4 vote, don't know exactly)
B) Resigning
C) Losing your reelection vote.

Democrats are probably more than happy to keep this weight around republican's necks... and he's made it clear he's not resigning... so... that leaves C.

I didn't say it was a "a foreign idea". I said there are no recalls for federal officials (because there aren't) and it's not because the New York State government hasn't bothered like you would have everyone believe.

We can all agree our democracy is already farked right? In that case, let's just see how this plays out. Let him stay. Let's see how many other GQPers he can take with him, or how much damage he can do to their already toxic party. Yes in a normal world he would have never have taken office, but we left the normal world a long time ago. So let's just see where this ride takes us. May be nothing, may be hilarious.
