For a character in the game that had such a minor role, what a farkin' hell of a previously-non-existant backstory they game him.

I'm still in the Arcane camp, for pure quality. The Netflix series was simply stunning, both for visuals, as well as kicks to the feels in the story department--which given that the game is thin on plot, but heavy on lore, is an achievement all on its own. The art style, and the action was simply top notch. And it's supposed to be getting a second season, and for Studio Fortiche, that's great news, because these are cats who really need to be watched. Their art style and attention to detail in their animation is on a whole new level and the better they do, the better other studios will have to do just in order to compete.

But as for your statement, I am a bit more confident, in that Pedro Pascal seems to have good instincts on which projects to back though. I didn't play this game--mushroom zombies and stealth mechanics just never appealed to me--but the series has delivered. From what I understand, they've taken some liberties with the game, but for the sake of storytelling. Bill's tale in the game is nowhere near so damn...wholesome as a for instance.

The one thing that I have to give these guys, whoever is doing their aging makeup needs a damn Emmy. Between Anna Torv, and what they did with Offerman, they've knocked it out of the park with creating characters that are malleable, given the skips in time reference. And believable time passing. And the leaps in time frame to set things up, has been textbook on how to do those sorts of leaps without confusion or interfering with the narrative flow.

With a bonus helping of Graham Greene as well! I ended up enjoying that series more than I thought I would. Basically The Oregon Trail on the small screen. I've never watched Yellowstone, but I'm a sucker for anything old west-related.

Absolutely agreed. I think it's going to go into the Sopranos/Deadwood/Rome hall of fame... Just don't want to get ahead of myself.

Pedro has been the bell weather of awesome shows for the past 10 years now. If he's in it, I'm watching it.

Not sure about TV, but I think we can all agree that the 90s Super Mario Brothers movie was probably the greatest film of all time.

I couldn't finish the first episode. I've never played or even heard of the video game and I suspect this is the rough equivalent of someone utterly uninterested in comic books being asked to sit through Thor 2. My roommate very enthusiastically explained what was going on but I sincerely thought the first episode of the Walking Dead did a better job of setting up its world and stakes. My roommate on the other hand was pounding on the refresh button waiting for torrents of the new episode to be posted, something I've never seen her do in the ~3 years she's been staying with me.

I've never played a single minute of the video game, but this entire series has been out of the ballpark fantastic from the very beginning. It's just great television -- the writing, the pacing, the acting, everything. Last night's episode is probably the best single episode of television I've seen in a very long time.

And I will continue to support the idea of just making Pedro Pascal the lead in everything. I think I could watch an hour of him sitting on a park bench.

Game of Thrones went downhill hard once they overran the source material (and the ending is downright infamous now).  The ending of Sopranos was mocked for a long time.  The Wire is generally seen as getting weaker as the series goes on (though the later seasons are regarded more favorably now than they were at the time).  I'm not saying it's necessarily going to happen, especially not when the source material is already written for them, but it's a very real possibility.

Anime and game shows?  Not sure if that's comparable to scripted dramas.

Anyhow, based on this part of the list The Last of Us is easily the best one yet.

Cross Fire (2020)
Detention (2020)
Maniac Mansion (1990-1993)
Mortal Kombat: Conquest (1998-1999)
Halo (2022-present)
Higurashi When They Cry (2016)

I'm saying I didn't think it was that interesting as a stand alone property. I'm not dismissing it for its origin, but I'm definitely not seeing merit in what I watched that I think might be present for existing fans of the franchise.

I definitely didn't feel like I needed to care about anyone I saw in the first episode other than the dog that ran off.

Actually I'm at a loss thinking of HBOP shows that did stick the ending.  Carnivale cancelled to soon. Love Rome but it was cancelled early too and a lot of the last season compressed.  The Wire jumped the farking shark in Season 5 when you expect us to believe both McNulty and Freeman would take it that far for that long.  Sopranos was BSG level bad ending.  GOT needs no explanation.  Westworld got soo bad it's being memory holed.

I guess Six Feet Under.

Assassin's Creed could spawn a number of great movies in different settings, but they would be expensive and they would have to completely ignore the whole conceit of the game with the "animus" bullcrap. I have played most of the games and I see the modern timeline stuff as just something I need to get through before I can go back to the cool stuff.

The Last of Us seems to be OK with changing minor aspects of the storyline (like this episode). I hope that means they will have the freedom to make a better show without feeling the need to reproduce things that were there for game mechanics.
