"Here's the leader of the free world pounding on the table, being irresponsible, saying 'no, no, no, just raise the limit, make us spend more.' No. That's not how adults act," McCarthy told reporters at the Capitol last week.

No, the adults are the ones telling you "This is debt we already incurred. It's a result of reduced taxes and spending on stupid stuff like border walls, and F-35s.

This didn't age well.

I don't get the debt ceiling. The US is like $30trillion in debt, what difference does it make at this point.

So, why have it at all? During the lame duck some Dems in Congress saw the likelihood of Repubs crashing the economy and proposed eliminating the debt ceiling, and Biden rejected it saying that was irresponsible.  If we are just going to raise it automatically, keeping it serves no purpose except to offer Republicans a chance to plunge the world into a depression.  Just get rid of it, because one of these times Republicans aren't going to blink.

farking Greenspan. At least he doesn't show his face in public much anymore. I think he took the calls to "fark off" after he built the GFC bubble to heart. That or he is just senile now.

Democrats could've just raised it when they controlled congress.

2023-01-29 5:03:54 PM
And Hakeem Jeffries and Schumer are saying exactly the same thing.

The Dems seem united in just not playing this game.

If the GOP wants to crash the world economy, they're going to own it.

But they don't want to actually budget spending cuts. They don't want to do the hard work of finding and negotiating cuts that Schumer will pass in the Senate and that Biden will sign.

They just want to pass useless culture war bills and then run to Fox to grandstand about how the Dems won't vote for them.

JFC

The debt limit is to pay for what you bought you twats.  If you didn't want to pay for Trump you shouldn't have supported him with what he wanted to spend.  But you sure did waddle up to the tax cut trough when the time came to vote in more than 25% of the current US DEBT.

But now you don't want to pay for it?

Party of personal responsibility and fiscal responsibility and patriotism my fuzzy white ass.

"I don't get the payment ceiling.  The US already incurred that debt.  Why are we putting a ceiling on the amount we pay but not on the amount we buy?"

That's the way you should phrase the question.  The total US debt is important, but the so-called debt ceiling isn't about that.

The debt limit is inarguably unconstitutional. The executive branch cannot be legally required to both 1) spend money and 2) not spent money.

That chart always pisses me off because it ignores the fact that the increase in Obama's first term was just accurate accounting for the things Bush swept under the rug.  Someone should make a real chart that looks something more like this with a big *:

Republicans control the House. Don't write the bills to spend money, but you have to pay for what you vote for. Don't ask Democrats to give you cover. Have the courage of your convictions. It's as simple as that.

And none of what you said matters because they didn't have the votes in the Senate. You could've said "Democrats could have given everyone sex robots when they controlled congress" and it would have been equally valid (or maybe not, i don't think anyone's raised the sex robot issue in the Senate)

[GOP, for every single revenue problem ever]: 'We need to cut spending on useful programs. Not so much on the useless stuff.'

2023-01-29 6:09:08 PM
The debt ceiling replaced Congress authorizing each bond issue by the United States Treasury by passing a legislative act that approved the issue and the amount.

Going back to that would only be worse. A rational* way forward: the budget process would automatically include the authorization to issue bonds as needed to cover the budget shortfall.

*Not a word that is ever seen in discussions about Congress.

Apparently, any sufficiently-advanced governance is indistinguishable from magic to moderates.

Let's be honest: the problem *isn't* that they lacked the political power, it's that they lacked the willpower.

When the super-wealthy want something, it *immediately* gets done (see: Congress screwing over railway workers).

When ordinary people want something, suddenly they want to take their time with it or aren't any able to do it at all (see: the 13+ years without any minimum wage increases).

2023-01-29 6:43:18 PM
The responsible solution is to amend the Federal Reserve Act to authorize the issuance of bonds sufficient to cover any authorized federal spending. But part of me wants the executive to slap its dick on the table and say that since Congress has written an absurd contradiction into the law ("pay these obligations, but also only pay them if the total outstanding bond face value is below such and such amount") and simply say they'll resolve the contradiction in the least harmful way possible.
