If you make the coating too thick it's just going to flake off when you cook.

Wasted time is wasted.

He knew he was wasting time. He wanted to see if he could get a mirror finish and he did. I think he said he's going to strip it and season it normally now that he's done.

He pretty meticulously avoids showing the brand, but was gonna say...if it's just a Lodge or some shiat, he should try to make a few bucks selling it to a local diner that wants kitschy shiat for their walls, then do the real seasoning on a new skillet.

Hmm a Yahoo article about a Reddit subreddit thread posted on FARK.

Or - can we get any more FARK than that?

Well, it's not news, so it's got that going for it.

There's some amazing trolling opportunities, here -- posting photos of it soaking in a sudsy dishpan or coming out of the dishwasher could be lots of fun

Dewey's seasoning journey with this specific skillet started all the way back in December 2022.

So, last month?

dear baby Jesus that's beautiful.

/I have two cast iron skillets with three coats on them and I feel they need another coat or two because I still get some sticking when I use them

I assume he'll get a panic attack if he even looks at a metal spatula

metal works great in cast iron with a proper seasoning.  It's the teflon and other non-stick things you ha ve to worry about scratching.

even if you do damage the seasoning in your cast iron, you just throw down some more oil, heat it up, and all good.  Unlike a Teflon, where once it's scratched, it just all peels off, and it's done.

Yup.

I use a metal spatula all the time in iron. Just don't go crazy with it.

This isn't a proper seasoning.  Even if it were, it wouldn't stand up to a metal spatula without scratches to the mirror finish.

I think I did 4 on mine. It's not mirror smooth but it works well.

I've read, I think even on here, that some people even take an orbital sander to them with progressively finer grits to smooth them out before seasoning. I'm not quite that ambitious.
