Fair tax is just a poor disguise for a tax break for the rich, placing the burden on the poor and middle class who can least afford it.

Or, you could, gut the tax code and start fresh.

RaceDTruck: Or, you could, gut the tax code and start fresh.

I can only imagine the shock of reinstating the original tax codes for this country. The top rates were taxed heavily, and the inheritance tax was designed to curb dynasties. It took needing the railroads to set the stage for our current tax woes.

Another alternative is just to give the IRS some teeth, and actually fully staff the department for a change.

I am certain at least some of them know exactly what it would do (and welcome it).

One side claims that the government just takes your money and wastes it on "those people", the other side points out that the government takes your money and uses it for the common good. You know, "what have the Roman's ever done for us?!?!":

Surprise! (not surprised), both sides of that argument get treated by many as respectable political leaders, when one of them really isn't. Lying about the realities of government spending in order to gin up support from xenophobic assholes to tear down all the scaffolding of modern society does nothing to make the country stronger (and much to make it weaker, to the obvious pleasure of oligarchs all over the world).

Some of the dumber Republicans really do just love trolling the libs (and the cheers they get for doing so), but there are Republicans who really do think that the government should never be allowed to use its own power to do anything except give money to businessmen to run things themselves. There are plenty of them who have said so on the record.

They are recognizably bad people, and that needs to be pointed out more often.

The 48% that don't make enough to pay Federal Income taxes piss them off. This is designed to make half the country pay about 15% of their income in taxes.
The big winners will be Canada and Europe. That is where the wealthy will go to buy their expensive things.

it will be fun to test out that theorem.

Just did my taxes this weekend. $71k taxable household income for married filing jointly with 2 kids. Took the standard deduction.

My effective federal tax rate: less than 3%.  This "fair" tax will raise my federal taxes by about tenfold.

IIRC my tax situation is close to the median for the US. Have fun GOP spinning this one.

Yes it is.  Illinois smartly voted that down a couple of years ago.

I love this idea, and the fact that they're dumb enough to keep it on life support so that Democrats can keep beating them over the head with it.

Dumbasses on Twitter were enthusiastically singing the praises of a national sales tax. "Between income tax, social security, property tax, and state income tax, I'm paying 42% of my income in taxes! 30% sounds great to me!"

Apparently these dipthongs don't realize the federal government is not the same entity as their state or county.

2023-01-29 10:59:26 AM
This is by far the most regressive tax proposal of which I've ever heard: 50% of the population that currently pays no income tax because of poverty, will now pay 30% income tax. And the top 10% income earners that currently pay most of the remitted income tax will now pay nothing except the consumer tax. Not "nothing completely", but less than before.

2023-01-29 11:06:43 AM
It was a goofy idea back when Boortz was peddling it; they claimed it was "revenue neutral" while claiming everyone would get a raise because employers would pass their tax savings on to the employees, fraud would go down, and we wouldn't need an IRS because states would take up the slack.  Never mind that their math was wrong, such a massive sales tax would encourage a black market economy, and that the "prebate" would be a nightmare to implement by the IRS whom they proposed to remove entirely.  It's economic Scientology.

Is this the point where they claim their massively unpopular tax plan is actually the Democrats plan?  Just like when they publically state they want to cut Social Security, Medicare and medicade and then pretend they never said it.

Elections have consequences.

2023-01-29 11:12:48 AM
The sad thing is that if something like this ever did pass, the poor, rural Republicans that it hurt would probably never actually do the math.  They'd see their paychecks go way up because the withholding would disappear and they would be elated about the larger paychecks.  Sure they'd notice paying more for stuff, but through the power of genuine/willful ignorance, they'd always think they were coming out ahead.  I can just hear them telling their future children stories about the dark days when the government took half your paycheck before you even got it.

2023-01-29 11:13:08 AM
How about this: A rich person gets to punch a poor person with no consequence, but only if they give $100 to a different rich person. The economy moves by circulating money and the rich people ultimately get to keep their money because they're job creators.

You're welcome.

2023-01-29 11:13:19 AM
If they instituted a national sales tax to the exclusion of all other taxes, I'd just start a communal network with my friends and neighbors. No reason to buy anything except ingredients, raw materials, and utilities (would hope utilities might be exempt but who knows with Republicans).

I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one. The informal economy still amounts to about half of national productive value and we'd see it jump to 80%.

Retail and manufacturing would crater.

They have to give the $100 to a RICHER person. Ultimately the richest person has to spend 5% of their annual income to purchase the rental homes of the lowest tier people and bulldoze those properties, to ensure more miserable people are available to punch.

Most Americans aren't aware of the overall concept (though they pay sales taxes every day).  Politicians don't want it because they might lose power.

I was actually thinking more Canada. VATs vary in Europe. Vancouver and Toronto would win huge with this. It would certainly end the shopping trips that Europeans take to NY and LA. So I guess screwing the blue states really has the the GOP excited.

It's interesting that Europe has nearly 20% VAT taxes and nobody complains about it being unfair?

Functionally, it's pretty much the same. Every business gets a credit along the way for the VAT taxes already paid with the consumer picking up the final tab.

What do you mean go there to buy things?  Of course I'll buy things there because that's where I'll be living.

I am not opposed to paying taxes, but I would like to know that my tax money is being used for the benefit of society, not to blow up brown people somewhere and make defense contractors richer in the process.

The the excess amount we spend on defense compared to the next three countries combined could go a long way to creating affordable college education, and something closer to universal health care.

I'm already wanting to go, but I have some things keeping me here.  If he GOP takes enough power to enact idiocy like this, I'm so out of here.
