Lack of shame is a prerequisite for contemporary conservatism.

Acolytes of all the above believe their leaders' visions have been betrayed by someone or other in one way or another, when the reality is they were undone by such trifles as "the voters", "reality" and "the consequences of their own actions".

I am reminded to throw The Guardian some money.

Britain is proof that someone trying to flee conservatives is fooling themselves.

Some places are worse than others, but you're never finding the paradise where they don't exist.

So maybe stop being a coward and start trying to find ways to help your home, instead of being desperate to escape it.

Quite why this is the default narrative of UK public life is unclear, other than the fact the scorched-earth mess of it all has to be blamed on someone other than the people who just happened to be holding a blowtorch in the Westminster area at the time.

That's a good burn.

Marina Hyde is a national treasure, and the sole thing remaining in The Guardian that's a guaranteed informative (and hilarious) read.

The slow rotting of The Guardian over the last decade is a tragedy.

In 2017, Nigel Farage explained that if he didn't get his perfect, shiftingly defined version of Brexit, he would "don khaki, pick up a rifle and head for the frontlines"

That image is certainly worth a solid "L-O-L".   Also, would the 'frontlines' of Brexit really require khaki? I guess if he's purely going to hang out at the Brexit frontline in Gibraltar, but since they don't seem to give a damn about what Gibraltar wants that'd be surprising.

Might be time to remind politicians who they should be working for. I'm thinking time to roll out the pillory and some rotten fruit

Having failed to get backing from her colleagues, the markets, business, the Bank of England, the public and experts from the Institute for Fiscal Studies and beyond, Liz was arguably a full six infinity stones short of a gauntlet.

I think they are trying a bit too hard with the metaphors to sound witty.

Defunding the police is a great idea. We need a new social service that answers 90% of the calls police get, staffed with social workers that do not carry guns.

I see religious idiot is here to cover for conservative stupidity and incompetence. If anyone wonders why so many conmen, liars, fraudsters, thieves, rapists, molesters, and delusional idiots become conservative politicians is they know they will have people willing to "save" them from their actions.

Congratulations on ensuring evil, incompetence, stupidity, hatred, and anger grow. Jeebus is willing to excuse anyone as long as it continues his false belief that non conservatives are the bad people.

2023-01-29 10:43:47 AM
Truss never did her history:  Dubya had the same thing attempted a few times after Obama got elected where a few idiots tried to reclaim his era to make him look better in hindsight.  And all of them were quickly shot down, abandoned, and forgotten.  I think they even tried to do the same during the very early Trump days (with the 'That was some crazy shiat' quote) but that was quickly forgotten about as any mention of his eight years of destruction also brings up the question 'why did we get involved in Iraq again' and was once again conveniently forgotten about.

The increasingly-mistitled 'Conservatism' can only be failed, never fail, and anybody who makes it looks as stupid as it truly is is sent to the political null folder.   And the common escape of hiding low until 'making a comeback' that they hope that sticks never works.  Truss is a loser, just like Dubya and his father, and will now be conveniently forgotten about.

So it's not state security forces systematically terrorizing, beating and executing minorities for petty misdemeanors? And it's not the people calling for them to be defunded? Not sure you thought this through, but that's kind of the definition of 'reactionary.' Try less hard.

Can I posit a thought? Americans have a very poor understanding of the UK. After getting rid of the poorly toothed kingdom in that dustup of the 1770s, we know them only from their cultural exports. We therefore do not understand that the vast majority of that country/kingdom/commonwealth whatever the fark it is are, for the most part, a bunch of farking idiots inhabiting the rotting corpse of a former empire. They are not Pink Floyd, Doctor Who, Joy Division/New Order/ Britpop/the music of the classic three of the Beatles, the Who and the Rolling Stones, and reruns of Penelope Keith comedies. It is, rather, exactly the blighted island of shiat and morons the Sex Pistols warned us about.

The conservatives also got a healthy dose of reality check after Thatcher's death. The way their idea of a national funeral got smacked so hard, punctured the narrative they created that she was a beloved public figure.

Being a conservative is actually really appealing.

You get to go through life without any sense of self-doubt or guilt, certainly you don't have to care about anyone else unless they're in your immediate family circle and then only just barely.

You always have the answers in front of you without having to do any of that annoying reading, or studying or research. The answers to everything in life are presented in 15-minute increments during your favorite cable news program.

No issue is complicated.  If it's too complex to understand without really informing yourself on it then it's written off as not a real issue, or fake news.  Everything else that's a problem in your life can be blamed on other people, or a group of other people.

You can be an expert on anything - the economy, immigration, geopolitics, immunology just by sitting on the toilet while looking at your phone.

You don't have to build or create anything.  You just have to destroy the work of others, or society in general.  Crushing the sandcastle is always more fun than building the thing in the first place.

There's no ennui, worry or wonder about your place in the universe or worry about the future of humankind.  Just you, you, you and you have all of the answers.

Being a conservative means you have answers for everything while bearing responsibility for nothing at the same time. You never have to live with consequences of bad decisions because you're never wrong.  It's actually kind of a glorious way to get through life.
