Ukraine aid links

A month and a half into the war (day 44), many of us felt helpless and listless at not being able to do more to help, so here is a list of things that we can do.

There are plenty of charities that could use your help, but even if you don't have spare cash lying about, there are still things you can do, so keep reading

If you know any Ukrainians in need or in the war zone, see the top of the (continued) post for links for them.

You can donate directly to Ukraine if you want to help them make more videos of tanks blowing up. (See 'military aid' below)

There are lots of humanitarian groups working to feed the displaced people and even their pets.  (See 'humanitarian aid')

And even if you're not in a position to give cash, you might be able to find a group that needs some volunteer help or attend a protest.  If you don't have a group in your area specifically helping Ukraine, you can likely still find other worthwhile causes.  And there are groups that have tasks that can be done online or over the phone without even leaving your home. (See 'other notes' (in the "continued" post)). Even just calling politicians to remind them that we need to support Ukrainians.

You can call out dumbasses online who are spreading russian propaganda and otherwise spewing toxic crap.  (Or join groups like NAFO) And by ignoring or blocking the assholes on here who try that shiat. (Make sure to watch for other threads, not just the daily one)

And you can even support capitalism, and buy stuff made in Ukraine or are fundraisers for the war effort.  (See 'buying stuff', (in the "continued" post)

This is in no way a comprehensive list.  This is just groups that Farkers have mentioned in past threads.  (Which I had to start trimming to comply with Fark's 100 link limit per comment before splitting it in two). If you want a more comprehensive list, see https://supportukrainenow.org . They also have links to specific groups by country that you're coming from for protests, taking in refugees, etc.  You might also find interesting charities at https://standwithukraine.today/ukrainian-charities/ and https://old.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/tgc00n/want_to_support_ukraine_heres_a_list_of_charities/

I make no claims about any of these groups.  I've trimmed a few that people have said might be suspect, but I have no personal knowledge of any of them.  If you feel the need to vet them before donating, see GuideStar or Charity Navigator. (Links to them below). Or see Forbes' list at https://www.forbes.com/advisor/personal-finance/donate-relief-to-ukraine/

If you're currently employed by a large-ish company, they may have a donation matching program.  You can check https://doublethedonation.com/ but it's also worth contacting your HR to ask even if they're not listed there.

Brits and such should consider donating to UK charities as they can get 25% 'Gift Aid' matching from the UK government.

If you've gained profits from stocks, consider donating the stocks directly, so they get the full value and you don't need to hold some back to pay capital gain taxes.

Other notes & ways to help:

You should check to see if your employer has a donation matching program.  Some may be listed at https://doublethedonation.com/. Some employers may even be able to set up an automatic donation.

Some donations may be eligible to get you nudie pics:  https://teronlyfans.com/english/

Many charities list how to donate through bank transfers.  This may cost a couple of dollars depending on your bank, but keeps them from losing significant fees to credit card companies.

If you want to fund Ukrainian reporting of the war:  https://www.gofundme.com/f/kyivindependent-launch;  https://www.patreon.com/kyivindependenthttps://dattalion.com/donate-to-dattalion/.  Or fund russian language news sites that have been banned in russia: https://support.meduza.io/enhttps://holod.media/en/donate/

If you can't donate money, but have free time and the health to do it, consider volunteering your time to groups to help them free up money to spend in Ukraine.

You can search Volunteer Match ( https://www.volunteermatch.org/search?v=true&k=Ukraine&onloc=false ), Charity Navigator ( https://www.charitynavigator.org ) or GuideStar (https://www.guidestar.org/NonprofitDirectory.aspx) for terms like Ukraine, and look find a group near you that needs extra hands.  If you can't find a Ukraine specific one, pick another one with a mission that you support.

If you want to donate drones, medical supplies and such:  https://www.mriyaaid.org/aid

If you want to have a supper club or bake sale fundraiser and would like recipes:  https://www.cookforukraine.orghttps://klopotenko.com/en ;https://www.valyastasteofhome.com/12-authentic-ukrainian-recipes/

There are even ways to contribute online, for the home bound people:

Help Ukrainians practice conversational English:  https://mobile.twitter.com/OlenaChek/status/1544689140725325825 or https://www.enginprogram.org

If you're a US citizen, call your congress critters and let them know how you feel:  (202) 224-3121.  Or if you want to sponsor refugees:  https://ukraine.welcome.us.  But you may want to try to find an NGO, as if you directly sponsor them you're financially responsible for two years.  (https://www.uscis.gov/ukraine ; So tell your representatives to give them refugee status).

If you would like to avoid doing business with companies still operating in russia, see https://www.dontfundwar.com

If you use streaming music services, search for Ukrainian artist playlists, so you'll give them a fraction of a penny and maybe find some new artists to support more directly.  See https://linkpeak.io/l/defendukrainehttps://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLL7h_otRo2v9j1fPVfVkibCjFbmLlThjx

If you watch cam sites, consider supporting Ukrainians (although some may currently be displaced, others may tag Ukraine to show support because they're from neighboring countries, and some of the most in need of support may not currently have internet access; I don't have any sort of definitive list)

There are also efforts to DDoS Russian websites such as the "Ukraine IT Army", but I'm not linking to them to avoid risking the mods removing this whole list.

Also see the official Ukrainian website on ways to support their effort:  https://war.ukraine.ua/support-ukraine/

In further corrections to official Russian government statements:

Recent reporting that Iran has suffered a drone strike from unknown assailants causing a massive explosion and refinery fire would be a terrible escalation of worldwide tensions if true, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense said today. While the nation and government of Iran has many enemies in the world today, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, America, NATO, Iraq, pretty much every other Middle Eastern nation, Antarctica, various 'stans, the Moon People, the Venusians, Hulk Hogan, and the entire surviving cast and production crew of 'Happy Days' it is believed that fault should lay squarely on only one person. Sadly, Fire Artist Ivan Ivanovitch's Persian Outreach program has not been appreciated by all and a team of crack VDV paratroopers has been dispatched to bring him home to his asbestos-lined cell to prepare for his next performance. *Touches earpiece* Unfortunately it appears that all VDV paratroopers involved in the extraction have suffered an unfortunate demise after they tripped and fell down the airplane entry stairs. We may expect that memorial services will be held next Thursday.

* The ongoing economic downturn brought about by Western sanctions has inspired new business successes, according to a Ministry of Finance report released today. Where difficulties sourcing materials for production of consumer goods persist, canny individuals have set up new supply lines to profit on market needs. This week we will profile precision glass importer Yevgeny Yevgenovitch, who plans to smuggle high quality lenses used in optical instruments such as telescopes by shattering them and eating a bag of broken glass just before crossing the border. We look forward to hearing good news of his profits and/or surgical repairs to his gastrointestinal tract.

* In weekend advice column news, this week's "Ask Babuskha" column in the Moscow Herald will be slightly delayed due to production issues related to getting Olga Olgavulva, the titular one-hundred-and-seventeen-year-old with advice for the lovelorn down from the tree in which she is currently stuck after chasing a pack of wolves out of her kitchen shack. In an attempt to bring her readers the sage advice for which she is known, a reporter is on-scene yelling questions to through a bullhorn and a typist is furiously recording her responses. So chin up 'Heartbroken in Nizhny Novogrod,' the Babushka will have help for your cheating lover problems shortly!

There is precedence for this in other wars. It reminds me of what the Germans did in 1942 after the battle of moscow.

<pulls up chair, takes a seat>

So. Barbarossa starts, the Germans tear into the USSR and rip their way to within striking distance of moscow, smashing up soviet army groups one after the other. They're almost there, but cant quite get the logistics together to amass the force they need to bag (much less hold) Moscow.

The Reds counter attack, and push the Wehrmacht back some distance and "save the capital" in Winter 1941, and as 1942 dawns, everyone's taking stock.

The Germans in Army Group Center were holding their forward positions in what came to be called the "Rzhev Salient", but they too had lost a lot of men and material. Hitler inexplicably decides to drop bagging moscow and instead gives Army Group south the lions share of the resources and they push deep into ukraine and beyond during the beginning of 1942's campaign season, into the caucases and culminating in Stalingrad.

So up to the north in the Rzhev Salient, the Germans adopt a more defense posture for most of the year and fight what came to be down as "The Battles of the Rzhev Salient", which were basically bloody slug fests where the Reds tried to buy themselves some breathing room in front of moscow and snuff out a piece of occupied land from which, on a map at least, it looked like further threads towards Moscow could originate. (Spoiler alert: The reds end of calling it "the meat grinder"; they took 2million casualties and didnt move the map significantly the whoel year.)

But back to the germans: How did they compensate for their losses, how did they plug the 200,000 man hole they needed to fill from the previous winter's battles if all the good stuff is marching towards its doom in Stalingrad?

Well, the luftwaffe had lots of people. The Army wanted to plug the lines with them, grab these anti aircraft gunners and many other jobs and hand them rifles and absorb them into the veteran formations in positions in Rzhev Salient. Was a very smart idea; at this point the Wehrmacht hadnt been attrited down yet and still had a lot of experienced non coms and was probably at the peak of its power; this would've been a great additional way to quickly top off the manpower shortages the army was facing.

The Proposal was put forward, but was not permitted. Why? Because Goering didnt want to give up his doodz. Typical fascist power struggle and politics! Instead, they created what came to be known as Luftwaffe "field divisions", which were basically airforce units doing an army unit's job using army equipment but led by Luftwaffe personnel reporting up to the head of the Airforce instead of the Army. Just like in these tweets above, the units were raised from scratch, had officers leading divisions who had no relevant experience, the men in the formations didnt know each other nor had they trained together, no one knew what they were doing, and they had no experience really to benefit from like they wouldve had, had they been absorbed into the Veteran Army formations. And guess how they performed in the tough as hell eastern front environment? So they got predictably slaughtered. Just like these orcs are gonna.

Doesnt that sound EXACTLY like what's going on here? I bet they're raising these scratch formations because of pissing matches and power struggles in moscow, that "goering" doesnt want to give up his numbers, or people are withholding for their own personal gains/reasons instead of for the good of the war effrot. Would absolutely make sense in putin's russia, given what we know about the power struggles there and the factions of the govt competing for resources/influence.

Real Question: How do they deliver tanks? It seems like a very easy BIG shipment for Russian spies to track and then have some cruise missiles waiting to land on a train crossing the border into Ukraine. I assume I'm missing some trick.

Russian Strengths & Capabilities in Ukraine - Why Russia is still a threat in 2023

"Threat?" Sorry, I no longer buy it -aside from nukes...maybe. After what we've witnessed in the field for the last 339 days, citing their paper strength doesn't impress me in the slightest. What, they haven't really been trying?

Russia is a pretend superpower.

Goodbye and good luck. Until next time, BadCosmonautWe miss you, but perhaps some good news?

At this point, y'all know the drill. Let me know what I missed or messed up. For other helpful links, check out Oneiros's list for Ukraine aid links (part 2), notmyjab's thread directory and other notables, toraque's improved Russian press releases, and danceswithcrows's memery emporium. This is your Ukraine War Thread update for the week of January 21 through January 27 (Days 332 to 338):

Consider this your content/trigger warning. The more territory retaken and the longer investigators look, the more Russian atrocities crop up like UN investigators determining that Russian soldiers raped and tortured children before murdering them. Rarely there will be a happy ending. Remember to read the comments before clicking links. Rue_in_winter put it well as did this cartoonist. Stay safe out there and consider practicing good mental health hygieneIt's tough out there. If you're willing to read one...

New tontine!

Now you, too, can sink the Moskva! A fun museum exhibit for patrons of all ages! Not to be outdone, Russia begins setting up its own interactive museum experience.

Cowshed Update: A short one, because Illia Ponomarenko's article does it more justice. Russia finally solidified its hold on Soledar although Prigozhin complained that he really captured it two days before the Kremlin announced it because Shoigu hates him. So the infighting continues and please ignore the 40k+ dead or wounded or MIA convicts it took to take it. Certainly makes the situation in Bakhmut proper more tenuous, but Ukraine is still holding firm there while pushing elsewhere. Just because Ukrainian opsec keeps information scarce, we should not forget the Svatove-Kreminna front where Ukraine is allegedly forcing the issue. And of course, does Bakhmut matter all that much if ZSU units are skirmishing Russian forces mere miles from the Donetsk city airport?

After much hemming and hawing prior to meeting at Ramstein Air Base (more like an ass chewing if reports are true), the floodgates seem to have finally opened (visualized as of Wednesday). All it took was the entirety of NATO and their domestic arms industry telling Germany to shiat or get off the pot. Managed to shake loose the Swiss, too. And they're getting Abrams on top of the Leopard 2s! Ukrainian troops are excited to get their newly promised equipment. They're especially hyped for Sweden's Archer SPG. It can roll up, shoot 3 rounds, and scoot before the first one even lands on target. Good luck hitting back at that unless you're actively listening for the report and are primed to fire. Other gear includes the Italian FH70, an interesting howitzer. Its gun carriage has an integrated engine which makes it more like an SPG than counterparts like the M777. F-16s might be coming finally (with countries willing to supply and training agreements allegedly in place) instead of being rumors on the wind like last time*. France is rumbling about supplying their own planes, we'll see if it's more Mirage than mirage. But really we want to know about the big guns. Despite being complicated to maintain, the US will send Abrams to Ukraine. Despite not being in-country yet (that we know of) somehow Russia has already destroyed them? SureJan.jpg (*PiS loudmouths may have scuppered a deal in Spring 2022. At least they provided MiG-29s and more Twardies are on the way.)

Soviet prison brigades have been back for a long time, but now Putin's breaking out even more WW2-era tactics. This time it's staging propaganda pieces around Moscow just like in WW2, but overall it would seem the invasion of Ukraine is more Tsarist than anything else. The knock on effects of the boondoggle are being felt across Russia's zone of influence. Recently there are rumors that a Russian loss in this war could see it exit Transnistria. Despite all that, tankies gonna tankie. Please report to Professors Rue_in_Winter and TWX for explanations of just how dumb that tankie take is. The shorter version is that Russian state TV uses ethnic slurs for Ukrainians. Not that it's the only one we've seen. Not by a long shot (memeified). Many of them fissle out if you know what I mean. Maybe we'll see Russia split into its constituent parts? That probably needs to wait until Putin kicks the bucket as his cadre of homines novi are unlikely to go against him.

If his paid partners won't do it, who will? Well Russia's currently losing population at the rate of 1 person every minute and a half, give or take, thanks to the war. And as the US found out in Vietnam, even if you're killing your enemies at an obscene ratio, it's hard to beat someone whose will to fight is greater than yours. Of course, Ukraine is stacking up the bodies like cordwood while losing fewer troops. How much fewer? Well some Farkers and I did some back-of the envelope math using publicly available data (like Oryx's collection of destroyed equipment). My conclusion: at worst Ukraine is losing 1 soldier for every 2-3 Russians killed which broadly lines up with what others thought (and what Von der Leyen said in early December). More optimistic estimates like Medic Zero's would have it at 1:6+ which is well within reason if Ukrainian claims are accurate.

Putin still unclear on the simple concept of Ukraine is Ukraine. The reasons why are manifold (real situation memeified). Ukraine's leadership is strikingly different, across the board, top to bottom. Paints a bright picture for the future despite the lingering horrors of war. But of course there will always be those willing to sell their loyalty for the low low cost of spiking Sweden's NATO bid.

Never ascribe to malice that which can be explained by incompetence. But also see the header of my post. So who knows? The latter would explain why Russian troops are degenerate in more ways than one.

If a train leaves Warsaw at 3:42am for Lviv, traveling at 90km/h, and a Russian Iskander missile is launched from Crimea, moving at 342km/hr, what time must the middle be launched in order for it to hit the train 30km from Lviv?

Not really. They're not very fast, they're really long, and they have very specific routes.

I am not a weapons specialist.  Nor do I have any training in tactics or strategy.  And I don't have any special knowledge of trains.  HOWEVER...

They're big and heavy, don't change velocity rapidly, and require a very specific path to move safely.  If you lead the train a bit, it's going to derail even if you miss.  And then it's just going to sit there for hours giving you plenty of time to line up additional strikes on specific cars if you like.  Do this far from the nearest major roads and it's not like they can drive up with trucks and offload everything before you can hit it again.  In fact... you might just wait until they try so you can hit the recovery team as well.

yeah you'd think they'd have that capility to interdict that sort of thing, but they've not been able to do it yet.

Theory: Their c2 is completely disconnected from both Intel and forward ops. By the time an order is issued to destroy the train, it's long gone. The Intel has to go up the chian and the command has to come back down.

It is not easy to keep them destroyed- even the Russians have been able to keep their rail lines in working order

But, we've seen quite a few examples of Russian trains being derailed or targeted in the last 11 months.  Some Belarussian partisans have been successful at destroying tracks in that nation from what we've heard too.

Russia is a pretend superpower.

watch the video. (tip: do it at 1.25 playback speed so you dont have to spend over an hour)

tl;dr: he argues that it would be a mistake to underestimate the threat RU still poses to UA. He acknowledges their weaknesses but cautions against thinking the entire army is as bad as the bad we hear about, and cites some supporting data to bolster it.

as always, its a decent, thought provoking vid.

I almost want to search back through the discussion to read about that, because that claim seems very, very wrong.

You only have to damage the track continuity in one place to derail a train, and not by all that much compared to the average explosive energy of a missile warhead.  Do it at a curve and the kinetic energy of the train will be happy to help.  These days we certainly have the ability to target a missile against a fixed target to within a few meters if we want to.

it's relatively easy to damage tracks enough to derail a train.  It's much harder to damage them enough to keep them from being repaired.

No, we haven't. We've seen a few notable derailments, which are a miniscule fraction of the amount of rail traffic utilized.

A couple of days back I posted some videos from NHK (Japanese National TV) on "How to Craft Safety" (https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFEzXnIQVwV8JBaiP0Zu1O5P_PItdn9B5 )

Last year, they had a full fledged show (15min episodes) called "Bosai: Science That Can Save Your Life", that talked about research that was being done about various types of disasters, and gave some tips for if you're ever stuck in them:
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/ondemand/program/video/bosaiscience/?type=tvEpisode&

If you're in a flood / earthquake / avalanche / heatstroke probe area, it might be worth a watch.  They also cover lightning, solar flares, crowd surges, and other more universal things.

Cobere's got good news from the doctor and the SSA.

LeoffDaGrate's doing great after his surgery!

Tembaarmswide's surgery is Tuesday followed by a long rehab (PT/OT?).
