I do appreciate they used Bill to just let Ron Swanson live out his fantasy.

If he digs up some gold I'm gonna lose it.

I thought it was just the right amount of gay, thank you very much.  Although my gay crush over Offerman is in pain.  I thought his character lasted through the game.  One episode....

I suppose you'd prefer your gays to be a little less... gay.

Speaking as a middle-aged gay man, it's refreshing to see romance between two regular guys who aren't shaved muscle boys or drag queens lip syncing for their lives. A shame they couldn't last but that's the nature of the show. Craig Mazin tore my heart out with Chernobyl and he did it again tonight.

If you can't watch this episode and get past the gayness and realize that it's a message about hope and humanity, then you're just a homophobic piece of shiat.

In absolutely no way am I homophone.  I celebrate gay pride.  Don't let the idea of someone not loving something you love make you so defensive that you're just to lash out at them.  I just wanted an action show.  It could have been a love story between a man and a woman and I still would have found it boring.

You're watching the wrong show.  If you expect The Last of Us to be an endless stream of fungal-zombie suspense, you may be disappointed.   Although I never played the games, those who have told me there's a much deeper message to the narrative.

And your 'brokeback mountain' comment makes me suspicious of your 'support.'  Every straight person in the universe who's uncomfortable with displays of male to male homosexuality almost *always* brings up that movie in a mocking comparison.

This show has the same issue that annoyed me about The Walking Dead-adults who won't teach a teenager about firearms in the post-apocalyptic world.  It's stupid to want to keep them defenseless when danger lurks in every turn of the road.

I don't care if you're suspicious of me.  You don't know me and I don't know you.  If I were a homophobe I most certainly would never say I celebrate gay pride.

I didn't want a love story, especially considering it was the entire episode.  There's other shows I can watch if I'm in the mood for that genre. I was bored.

I was wondering about that too, but I thought Joel doesn't want her to have a weapon because he doesn't trust her.  Why the lack of trust?  Maybe he thinks she's too childish to weild a firearm?  She doesn't seem to take the range outside of the QZ very seriously at times.

Sorry you were bored.  I thought the episode was a beautiful break from the near hopelessness of a post apocalyptic world.

Maybe the rest of the series will be more to your liking.

It is possible I'm expecting something that isn't the reality of the series.  I've never played the game.  The first two episodes sent me down a road and this one felt almost like a different show to me.

Why lug around something you can't use and may never be able to use? In the story it's 20 years after the end, there's no more ammo to be found. You could only maybe get some from FEDRA guys.

Joel isn't a prepper, he's living as best as he can. If the tool is useless, he's leaving it behind.

My only disappointment about the episode is we were robbed of Bill and Ellie interactions.

Which are some of the funnest in the game, if only for the fact she is entirely indifferent to Bill's worldview.

Keep in mind these fungus zombies hunt by noise, so if she panics and fires her gun at the wrong time, when a quieter option was on hand, they get swarmed.

Nah it was incredible. Never played the game but it was awesome beginning to end. Absolutely wasn't what I expected and was beautifully done.

I know enough about the game to know it's about relationships first. Infected second. Like The Walking Dead. Except good.

A fair point, and the scarcity of ammunition is another, but you really don't want to do hand to hand with the infected. At least teach Ellie to use a machete or some other weapon.

I get why Joel doesn't want to let Ellie be armed but why does Joel not want to arm himself more than he does? A rifle would be almost a requirement in the apocalypse.

Damn, that was a gut punch of an episode. Phenomenal performances by Bartlett and Offerman. That booby trap involving band saws (?) was bad ass as well.

I think he said something about there being little ammo left in the outside world, which I took to mean a rifle is more cumbersome than useful. Shrug.

Ten bucks says Bill wakes up next week from an insufficient dose, assesses what happened from all his stuff missing and tracks Joel down.

Also: I really liked this episode. Bill got a much better character treatment than in the game, which amounted to "LOL HE READS TEH GAY PORN".

2023-01-30 1:44:12 AM
A hell of an episode giving the game players a big old piece of backstory and showing us more how things ended and transitioned to the present time.  Maybe it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I think it hit all the buttons and things got dusty at least for me.  I like how the show is pacing things and I appreciate the decision on how to structure the show with a little Joel/Ellie at the beginning and end.

If we want to get all realistic, it was a heck of a chance to give Ellie a lesson with firearms and some live fire practice as certainly Bill had more ammunition than they could carry.  While Joel may not trust her with a gun, teaching her how to use one when it may become necessary is probably a missed opportunity.  Setting aside the preserved battery, the likelihood of useable fuel at this stage in the apocalypse is minimal and it would be really impractical to drive anywhere due to the blocked roads and destroyed infrastructure even staying on backroads. We will see how the story handles that next week as it looks like the action will be picking up requiring some stealth skills in a eastern/midwestern city.

I was hoping for the same.  But no, I think he's dead.  It diminishes the message behind that episode if Bill accidentally survives.  And I also think the writers wanted to differentiate this series from the game, but not unnecessarily.

Mixed feelings about that.  As I said above, I like me some Offerman.

My only regret is the missed opportunity of Ellie and Bill being assholes to each other. But this was an awesome episode. It feels like each episode will explore love in all it's forms (both good and bad) and the fallout of such. Knowing the plot of the game, it will be fascinating in this world they have created.

Not to alarm you, but the entire core of the game is the love between a surrogate father and daughter. Not BOOM! zombies.

I found nothing in that episode that was boring. It was a perfect slice of life between two characters that depended on each other in a post-apocalyptic world.

I hear rumor that Troy Baker will portray a certain character that meets Ellie near the end of this season. That's going to be a farked up episode.

I wasn't expecting to be emotionally devastated by the best love story ever portrayed on television in an episode of Last of Us (with Nick Offerman, no less), but here we are.
