They want to reintroduce the marten
here in Pennsylvania.
I haven't seen them myself since 1980, when I left to go live in new england.
Reintroductions are awkward. Shoot. I bet I forget all their names.
Last time I saw them, I looked young. They had that late 70s, early 80s hair.
I can do without reintroductions.
If I see one in Sheetz and they recognize me, cool. But you remember MY name first, you silky furred bastard.
It's been 40 years.  You never visited.
Just nod, say, hey. Move on.

My domestic cats refuse to eat rancid food.  I'm sure Siberian Tigers are just the same.

Yeah, but they aren't super-cool predators! I wanna see "dragged down by tigers" enter the risk assessment for poachers & backcountry boarders.

Do you want tigers with digestive issues?  because that's how you get tigers with digestive issues!

This sounds like another excellent example if introducing a species to some place that 20 years down the line becomes a ridiculously successful invasive species that's working out everything else in the area.

For rhinos, it's an idea worth trying. Tigers... you're late, subby: There are more tigers in the USA than in their natural habitats. However, letting a big cat into the North American ecosystem when farmers are whining about wolves every day wouldn't be a good idea.

2023-01-29 8:44:56 AM
Reminds me of a Fun Fact: There are more horses now in North America than have ever been.

So the tigers would have plenty to eat, anyway.

This is a really bad idea. I can only think that someone "accidentally" on purpose released some tigers from the wild animal sanctuary in Weld County into the mountains and are now like "I wonder if they will succeed in the wild?".

The answer is: we will find out in a fark.com news story in 6 months if a tiger has broken into someone's mountain cabin.   Colorado is very populated, you would be better off releasing them in Wyoming.

New Mexico has an introduced Oryx population. Giant, 250 kg beasts out of Africa. It snows regularly in their US range, the now-10,000 strong herd is undaunted. Only wild predator is cheetah, which I would be fine with being conspicuously introduced.

There isn't all that much farming going in in the Colorado Rockies...

I kinda like the idea.

"Worlds farked, fark it, let's go for maximum chaos" we could put platypus in Florida, lions in Texas, grizzly bears in Pennsylvania, California would look so much better with a few brown hawks from Australia. Really help em clear their brush problems.

I mean peebles Ohio already had a kangaroo problem once

There are already bears and wolves. In most years there isn't enough good for the bears and they're coming down into settled areas and eating livestock because they're starving. Adding more to the top of the food chain when the bottom and middle are gutted is just foolish.

Introducing species to non-native environments is one of the ways humans have farked the planet.

Much better would be to remove introduced species, like cows, sheep and lumberjacks, from all our public lands to let the native deer, elk, bison, pronghorns, bears and lions repopulate them.

There's a nice running trail on the outskirts of my town, but it's built right next to this Big Cat sanctuary.

There's no running motivation quite like hearing a lion's full roar from a few hundred feet away

Tigers could fill the ecological niche left empty when we exterminated the North American lions.* The problem is we also exterminated most of the megafauna they ate* so there's not a lot of point in having a predator capable of keeping megafauna populations in check. So unless you're looking to also introduce other lost niches** for them to feed on, you're better off protecting the cougars we have now.

*Inconclusive if we killed them, but the timing is suspicious.
**Elephants can basically replace Mastadons, right?

karl2025: The problem is we also exterminated most of the megafauna

Yeah, but it's been legalized in plenty of states now and shouldn't be long at the federal level.

wait, what?
