Marquee Moon is such a masterpiece that Adventure gets tragically overlooked, but it's just amazing too.

That entire album is perfection from start to finish. Anyone who thinks guitar heroics are the sole province of metal and hard rock needs to listen to this freaking majesty.

Not many debut albums can match up against Marquee Moon. With today's pop music focused heavily on a singles mentality we are unlikely to anything like it for a great while. Thanks for the great music Tom.

Tom Verlaine's solo records were some of the best of the eighties.

Pop music has always been about the single. They even have a physical release format of the single for vinyl, tape and disk. b/w (backed with) and b-side is a thing for a reason.

When you have Nels Cline on guitar, all things are possible.

okAY, going to try to keep this short:

Marquee Moon. Hell yeah.

Adventure. Our band did "Ain't That Nothing", what a great song.

Tom Verlaine first eponymous album. Great. One song "Breaking In My Heart", the only song I know that was a collaboration with Ricky Wilson from the B52s. Freaking beautiful man.

But if you have a minute, check out the album "Dreamtime". Two songs, "A Future In Noise", and "Down On the Farm". You're welcome.

Thete really aren't enough actual Television songs that you had to vomit Jeff Hairbag Tweedy into the thread?

Seriously. Wilco is garbage. That's disgusting. What's wrong with you?

This was a sad thing to wake up to. I remember buying a compilation of pink bands. Had ramones, blonde, suicide, dead boys. Was my introduction to most of those and other groups and was quite an eye opener for 16 year old me. Bit the two tracks I played the most were "Venus" and "See No Evil."  There was something mesmerizing about that gorgeous guitar interplay and unusual David Byrne-like voice. I wanted and needed more, eventually tracked down a copy of Marquee Moon and it didn't blow my mind at first. It's not that kind of album for me , was more of a creeper. Took some distance from it for the full realization that it's truly a sublime masterpiece to kick in.

This might be an odd choice for the ones who know this album, but every song is so farking good.

Marquee Moon changed my life when I heard it as a freshman in college. Verlaine, along with Richard Thompson, probably most influenced me as a guitarist.

And the end of the guitar solo on the title track, Marquee Moon, where the piano burst through, is one of the greatest pieces of music I've ever heard - up there with Eric Dolphy's flute entrance in Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments."

There's a bunch of those. 9 discs total I think? Rhino released them separately and in a set.

From when you could pick up just about anything on Sire Records, only knowing a little about the band, and pretty much be assured that it was going to be at least a decent album.

Dude, seriously, Verlaine admired Wilco enough to team up with their guitarist for an album and Richard LLoyd was/is besties with Jeff Tweedy, so the band you love, loves the band you hate.  What are you gonna do?

Aw man, I found Television in high school in the 90s and after my initial "wait, how is this punk?" befuddlement wore off I was hooked.

For me one of the things was his solos were amazing, but also remarkably simple and playable. Marquee Moon was probably the first album I really sat down and learned some of the main riffs and solos off of, because they're simple and beautiful.

RIP dude, you've created music that will be treasured for a long time as something unique.

He left behind a solid body of work, solo and with Television. I'm no guitar nerd, but when I listen to Verlaine, my heart tells me that this is a man who can play.

"Marquee Moon" is such a perfect song that it frustrates me that its length (10 minutes without a single wasted note) can make it a hard sell for a modern (read: "short") attention span. I once covered a shift for a young colleague who promised me he would return the favor. I told him the only thing I wanted in return was for him to listen to this song. The math spoke for itself: a 10-minute commitment beats the hell out of 6 hours, so he complied...and he thought the song was great.

The music scene in NYC in the late 70s-early/mid 80s was unparalleled in US history.

It was a great time to be in high school in NYC. By the late 80s almost everyone I knew was in a band and NYC had hundreds of venues for punk, metal, NY/HC (Bad Brains at CBGBs anyone?), hard rock, blues, jazz, you name it. There was never a night in the city you couldn't find a good local band playing and every weekend all over the city there were clubs and bars with good live acts.

CSB. And it is cool. It means a lot to me. Listen...

I used to work at Strand bookstore, in the basement. The uncorrected poetry proofs were stored there and Tom Verlaine came in all the time. At least once a week. My friend Jack - dead these last 16 years in May - knew I was a huge fan. So he played a trick on me. He waited until Tom was behind me one day and I didn't know it. "Hey, aren't you a huge Television and Tom Verlaine fanatic?" So of course I gushed like a little girl.

Jack spun me around and I was immediately staring up into Tom's face. He smiled and just said "Wow, thanks, what's your name, man?" After that day he greeted me by name.

I left NYC. 5 years later I went back, walked by Strand and he was outside on the sidewalk looking at the discount racks. I caught his eye as I walked by and I heard "Hey (real name) what's going on? I haven't seen you in a long time." We talked for about 20 minutes. That was the last time I saw him.
