They've never liked the free market.

Will any of them mention that they were replaced by Boll O'Reilly's network? It's not like OAN and Newsmax were replaced with the Gay Channel.

Didn't AT&T kick them in the dick when they went after them over CNN?

Lol... proceed. They hire lawyers by the dozen.

The contract dispute will be resolved before the first hearing. GOP will strut around the board and claim victory that their threats of an investigation made all the difference. Then they will write a bill that says all propaganda channels MUST be carried by all carriers no exceptions, regardless of cost. But only the conservative ones.

2023-01-29 1:54:05 AM
Last week, House Republicans sent the company a letter threatening investigations for "de-platforming" Newsmax and alleging collusion to "de-monetize" right-wing outlets.

Umm, point of order, how the fark can you "de-monetize" that which was never, umm, monetized?

It's always been no carrier fees and DirecTV will happily continue on that basis, this is just a shakedown. I presume the First Amendment applies to corporations, being as we are in the era of Citizens United. I strongly hope that DirecTV's lawyers and representatives dragged before Congress will use the words "First Amendment" in every statement and answer they give.

"Umm, can we get a First Amendment jug of water for the desk please?" That kind of thing.

I look forward to seeing Newsmax executives forced to testify under oath about why they knowingly peddle harmful lies for profit.

Just kidding, committees write their own rules, and I doubt that the right wing assholes are going to let minority members issue any subpoenas.  Can't let democratic norms get in the way of abusing the GQP's new power.

It must be demoralizing coming in as the party majority of the House when you have absolutely zero power because the other party holds the Senate and the White House and the leader of your party is legitimately under investigation for multiple very serious crimes and could realistically be the first former president to be indicted.

I mean you have two choices, make up a bunch of bullshiat and hope it fools swing voters (the dumbest people on the planet) or suck it up and take the short term damage and distance yourselves from the cancer.

I said it then and I still maintain that if the GoP had voted to impeach the second time they would have been rid of this albatross. There would have been short term blowback but he would have been done.

But now they have the choice I mentioned above, and again they are rolling the dice on the slim hope of short term gain.

nytmare: The contract dispute will be resolved before the first hearing. GOP will strut around the board and claim victory that their threats of an investigation made all the difference.

I wasn't even aware there would be a hearing about this. What grounds to Newsmax have to take this to litigation? They've been offered an extension of an existing deal on exactly the same terms, they've rejected it, they're off DirecTV accordingly, under what grounds do they go to court?

And if I'm wrong and it does go to court, how do you see that playing out? DirecTV can easily demonstrate Newsmax aren't bringing in new viewers or raising revenue (they have a small audience of invariably elderly viewers who are not attractive to advertisers) and this is just pathetic from Newsmax, how's a judge going to rule that DirecTV must now pay carrier fees?

The dispute's resolved alright, Newsmax either crawls back tail between legs or they don't, but how can Republicans take credit for "we biatched and moaned until it was clear Newsmax ain't getting paid, victoy is ours!!"

On the one hand we could stop paying attention to this kind of crap but on the other if we leave Republicans unattended they'll send us back to the dark ages.

I'm sure these companies are petrified of a deeply divided House GOP that wouldn't be able to legislate a bill out of the House, let alone one that would be signed by Biden.

All they have is spite, spittle, and venom.

enry: Why does the GOP hate the free market?

Because the modern GOP is an anti-capitalist party, regardless of how often they use "socialism" as a dog whistle.

They have no principled objection to government direction of the economy, as long as that government is run by Redcaps and their fellow-travellers to further their political goals, viz. making themselves rich and keeping Those People poor and powerless.

Real free enterprise has the tendency to up-end traditional power relations. Those who had power in pre-capitalist societies (including the antebellum South) have never liked the idea of their inferiors earning their own money, much less keeping enough of it to live better than hand to mouth.

I'd love to see the GOP leadership asked: "Aside from sanctions, what was so bad about apartheid South Africa?"

Someone who actually thought free enterprise a good thing would be happy to explain how horribly inefficient the South African economy was, competitive only in commodity extraction (like Russia today).

A Redcap will, at best, engage in whataboutism on the subject of the predicament of poor white South Africans today before changing the subject back to whatever he saw on Newsmax that morning.

Or they just are tired of wasting money pushing electrons around to support a channel that they
can't justify to the shareholders...

And if they have one of their hundreds of lawyers send a letter over to Congress stating just that..I don't see where this "investigation" is going to go..

AND AND AND!! Where was all this investigating when Taco Bell stopped having Verde Sauce????
Let's get real and deal with serious things here...Fark the news bimbos and some rich dudes pet TV channel.

I'd like to see a serious investigation into why there is no history or learning on 2 channels named as such. Cool that totally won't be a waste of money.

There is this thing called Captialism that dictates a company can drop a network if it wants to.
There is this thing called Socialism where the Government tells you what channels you can have on your tv.
Republicans are Socialists.

Do you have Sirius satellite radio? Sirius have a channel for both conservative and liberal talk radio, same way they have channels for corporate country and the Grateful Dead. (Oh, and Bloomberg radio.)

Like it or not, there is genuine demand for this garbage among certain demographics, one that unscrupulous entrepreneurs can monetize, and have been since Rush Limbaugh's day. Everyone's racist uncle won't listen to real news? Fine---broadcast fake news as well, and he'll hand over his money too. What could possibly go wrong?

Keizer_Ghidorah: It's almost like AT&T and DirecTV don't want to support hatred, racism, sexism, and terrorism.

AT&T literally inspired and funded the creation of OANN.  It just got a little too crazy for them.

https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-oneamerica-att/

A Reuters review of court records shows the role AT&T played in creating and funding OAN, a network that continues to spread conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and the COVID-19 pandemic.

OAN founder and chief executive Robert Herring Sr has testified that the inspiration to launch OAN in 2013 came from AT&T executives.

"They told us they wanted a conservative network," Herring said during a 2019 deposition seen by Reuters. "They only had one, which was Fox News, and they had seven others on the other [leftwing] side. When they said that, I jumped to it and built one."

Since then, AT&T has been a crucial source of funds flowing into OAN, providing tens of millions of dollars in revenue, court records show. Ninety percent of OAN's revenue came from a contract with AT&T-owned television platforms, including satellite broadcaster DirecTV, according to 2020 sworn testimony by an OAN accountant.
