There's another stadium I'm glad I visited before it turned into that ugliness it is now.

I'm a born and bred A's fan (was a batboy for them in 1991), and hope they stay in Oakland.  Lots of great memories at the coliseum.

I'm sure I've asked this of you already but can you give me a Rickey Henderson story. He's my favorite baseball player of all time.

I have so many, but I'll tell you the one I always share.

We were in the dining area, and he says to me, "Hey batboy, go get me a sjdhdhfjrnr."

I said, "Excuse me?"

He says, "I said, go get me a fkgoendjfk."

Not wanting to upset one of my heros, I didn't ask him again and went to where he was pointing.

I brought him back a bowl of cereal, and he goes, "What the f#ck is this?"

I said, "It's a bowl of cereal Mr. Henderson."

The whole team (Canseco, McGwire, Harold Baines, etc.) is laughing at me and finally Dennis Eckersley says to me, "He said he wanted a cup of water."

So embarrassed, but not as embarrassed as the time Tony LaRussa made me go get the "left-handed Rosin Bag" from the manager of the Angels...who said he left it in the batter's box and that Tony had the key to it.

Hahaha. Thanks for sharing! Love those stories. I am so in awe that you got to be a batboy for the A's.

"...the club and Major League Baseball have deemed the stadium unsuitable for a professional franchise."

It's true.  The beer is only $8 and nachos are $12.  I expect at least twice that from a professional franchises.

It's oxymoronic if you think about it - baseball has more home games than anyone so comfort is a must, but it's also the sport with the strongest ties to its traditions and history, and that history is of the Classic 16ish stadiums and their quaintness and idiosyncrasies. I don't think a billion dollar park is a must but at the very least you have to be smart about what you're building (something Al wasn't when he built Mount Davis, fwiw).

\most people forget Baker Bowl and League Park in that 16ish part, fwiw
\\and by smart I mean "don't waste it on an ugly ass place like Globe Life Hangar"

The land for the stadium is worth more than $1B b/c Bay Area real estate is Looney Tunes.

Tear down Mount Davis, fix the outfiield seats, fix the bathrooms. Maybe slap on some fresh paint. Done. Best stadium in the majors.

I went to one A's game when I was very young (at least 25ish years ago) and my only memory from that game was Ricky Henderson stealing a base. Very cool.

Awesome place to watch baseball. shiatty place to do anything else. If I owned the A's I'd just roll back admission to the 90s prices. $4 walkups. And bring back all the day games. Cheap beer. It's like a big AAA park honestly, treat it that way.

We took a short day trip to Pittsburgh to see the 'Rats play the Padres play during Tony Gwynn's last season. Ironically, he was given the day off but we were hopeful he might pinch hit later in the game. We got a little miffed when it became obvious that he likely wasn't going to do so but Rickey Henderson saved the day by hitting a home run for us.

Tony came out for a hat tip to the crowd during the stretch so we considered the two events to be good enough.

Tom Hanks sold peanuts and popcorn in the stands there. I saw Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Dan Marino play there. Not on the same day. In the 70's, Rolling Stone magazine did an article titled The Greening of Oakland. They had a lot of concerts there and back then, most everyone was smoking cheap Mexican weed, which always had seeds. People would clean their seeds out at the concert and dump them on the lawn. Because the As were kicking ass back then, the field was very well maintained. This lead to thousands and thousands of tiny pot plants growing in the outfield. Now you know the real reason why Reggie Jackson tried to kill the queen. He was totally baked out of his mind.

The A's completely botched the tank by pretty much telling everyone it was Vegas or bust.  Now they have Vegas saying "give us a sweetheart deal or you can stay in Oakland."  And Oakland saying "give us a sweetheart deal or good luck finding a place to play in Vegas."

Couldn't have happened to a nicer ownership group, honestly.

Wonder if they're having second thoughts about the Raiders...that's the only reason I see LV not going whole hog on luring the A's.
