What an absolute waste of everyone's time, from the applicant to the interviewer. Just have a 5 min conversation with someone.

Having to lie about explain how you're super passionate about some bullsh*t underpaid position is so pointless. It's all performative nonsense and everyone knows it. Yeah, I'm super driven to answer phones and alphabetize your files. It's my life's passion. Truly.

Are you looking for work? Just that your passion, forthrightness, effort and writing skills are enough to make anyone offer a job. A great, fulfilling prestigious position at $2.69 hourly plus tips sound good?  When can you start?

A small shop asking for all that bullshiat is probably hoping their minimum wage employee is going to make YouTube/Facebook/TikTok videos in their spare time for the company for no extra pay.

<David Attenborough>

Ah yes, there it is: NobodyWantsToWorkAnyMore, the dulcet early morning mating call of the Cheapus Executivus Capitalus, aka the common American CEO. Listen closely.

Here you can see him gathering twigs, berries, leaves together between the y-stems of a branch, building for himself a small hovel. He hopes to attract the female of the species, the Laborus Employus Servantus, with his generous offering of $5.35 per hour, no overtime, no benefits, no paid time off.

Someone approaches. She inspects the nest carefully, and gives her response to his efforts thusly: ThatDoesn'tEvenCoverLivingExpenses. And like that she is off on a wing, in search of a better suitor.

Our hero sits, dejected. He repeats his call, more of a lament than a song, as if spiting the woman who rejected him. Was his nest not good enough for her? No, he thinks. Clearly her demands were too high and she wouldn't have made a productive employee anyway.

Cheer up, old friend. Someday you may find your cheap labor. It's only a matter of time.

Nah, they would have called them in for an interview and not asked for an essay. Hard to convey your attractiveness through copywriting.

Laughs in current job search-ease... from job ad sites which can't parse a resume.docx worth a damm, to extra questioning/questions, mini video and other recorded question sessions, to the all hated Zoom interview, but the Other employee doesn't have his camera turned on, just a black screen... I hate the current atmosphere.  To include, salary offerings are like at 2/3's of what they were pre-covid in my field. Not good.

This right here. I've outgrown my current job and have been looking around for a while. Found a job that looked like a slam dunk and applied, but I heard nothing and the job posting disappeared after exactly 30 days, so I'm guessing that they already had someone in mind but had to open up the job to the public for HR reasons. But, they helpfully redirected my resume to a different job, where it's been 'under review' for the last seven weeks.

It's bad enough that practically nobody in my area is hiring for IT work, but it would be nice if the jobs that are being advertised actually existed. It'd save me a lot of time.

We need the government to set the job requirements allowed based on pay rate.  Or if not a single set, have an agency that reviews job postings and sets the wage or salary based on the requirements.

Problem solved.

Of course. The problem is figuring out who to follow up with. I didn't send my application to a person, I sent it through their ridiculous job portal thing. I actually did work at this place a couple of lifetimes ago, so in this case I did know who to follow up with, but all I was able to get out of them was that they got my application and they'll let me know if they're interested. Super helpful.

Okay, this is definitely a repeat from several months ago. I recognize the face of the applicant.

Look, if you don't want to hire monkeys, don't pay peanuts. Pay an "efficiency wage" and whoever you hire is less likely to goof off and risk losing a job that pays above minimum. Your new minion's extra productivity will more than pay for the higher wage.

This isn't graduate-level econ, folks. Henry Ford did likewise. Lord knows Ford had some bad ideas, but that wasn't one of them.

I'm going to catch flack for this, I know. Use LinkedIn. I only do contract work, and only remotely, and have for years. I've gotten a few jobs via word-of-mouth, but most have all been through there.

Expect to be ghosted by recruiters. Do the same to them.

Who cares if someone is blank on Zoom? Be polite, answer the questions, ask a few of your own. There's a decent chance the other people on the call are just as irritated about the blank as you are. Be better than them.

Use the "Quick Apply", no resume parsing needed. If anyone asks you to fill out another form, do it if it's easy, blow it off otherwise.

Apply for jobs you're barely qualified for. Seriously.

Maybe the most important part: keep applying and interviewing until you've actually started the new job. Not when you think the interview went well. Not when you think you've got it. When you're actually doing it.

To me, part of my job is finding new jobs. I haven't been full-time for nearly twenty years, and I have no intention of ever going full-time again. Contracts pay better, and I'm treated better.

However, if the elites and overmasters caste can collude enough, they can get the underchuds desperate enough to work for peanuts.  Because there is no safety net.

Problem solved.  Econ class passed.

Yep, just walk into the offices and ask for the hiring manager, easy. If you're not hitting the pavement you're not really motivated to get the job.

If they don't reach out to you within a couple days it means they're not interested or they've already picked somebody for the job.  Also, a lot of jobs are only posted online because it's a requirement to do so if they're going to hire an H1B candidate.

I'm getting a laugh out of this, I quit my job in December, I looked up the bid for my replacement and it is ridiculous.  They want 5 years management experience, expect 11.5 hour days and make no mention of salary... so glad I quit that place.

Meanwhile, I'm getting 2 to 3 emails and phone calls a day from HR people and recruitment managers asking me to apply for jobs at their companies.  I had an hour long interview with a company I actually want to work for on Wednesday, it went pretty well and I've already received follow up questions in emails.

Turns out that running a factory overnight through a pandemic, labor shortage and dealing with supply issues looks really damn good on a resume.  Especially when you can honestly say you were beating all the other managers with a fraction of the resources and manpower.

If you accept to make a video resume for a minimum wage sales job, you'll probably accept to clock in when the store opens, not when you arrive at work.

You could have used bail, balk, or bawl. Which one did you mean?

This right here. The only environments I've worked in that were more toxic were call centers. I'm so glad that I'll never have to deal with that bullshiat again.

SMB2811: chitownmike: basscomm: Swampmaster: Laughs in current job search-ease... from job ad sites which can't parse a resume.docx worth a damm, to extra questioning/questions, mini video and other recorded question sessions, to the all hated Zoom interview, but the Other employee doesn't have his camera turned on, just a black screen... I hate the current atmosphere.  To include, salary offerings are like at 2/3's of what they were pre-covid in my field. Not good.

The asteroid apocalypse can't come too soon!

/Attn: HR and Hiring Managers, be polite and send a note to the applicant that you moved on to a different person or chose someone else.  I hate getting ghosted/ ignored!!! Happens way too often!

You do know that following up after submitting a resume is a thing right?

Yep, just walk into the offices and ask for the hiring manager, easy. If you're not hitting the pavement you're not really motivated to get the job.

this is what boomers who haven't job-searched in 30 years think job-hunting is like in 2023.

Sure. When you raise minimum wage to the same tjjng some people have worked years to get to, you're gonna get companies getting a little picky. One way or the other, minimum wage jobs are either throwaway jobs only meant for a starting point, or they deserve more and more money.
