I've let go of the second one for now. I'm sane (ha, maybe?) but not happy as a result of the messiness. I occasionally daydream of moving to a new clean house. So I guess that takes away the "sane" part.

We enjoyed watching her show and implemented some of her philosophy. I pack my clothes for trips like she recommends, but the rest is not consistent. *shrug*

I did learn a trick or two from her book.  I'm a little more organized now.  But tidiness is a choice.  I wouldn't want my kids to live in a museum, unable to touch anything.  This was a wise choice.

Many moons ago the Chicago Trib had an article about a police drug raid on a home. It said as well as drugs, they found kids being kept in squalid, filthy conditions.

The next day they printed a retraction, saying the children were fine, the conditions were normal for a home with 5 kids.

A pandemic turned the house into a 24/7 home office, daycare, home school, restaurant and hotel.  shiat be messy yo.  I focus on the kitchen, bathrooms and my office.  The rest waits a bit.  If I can work, cook and wash in pristine conditions, the bedroom can be a bit messy

So all the mothers who bought her book are automatically reimbursed?

Or abortions should be legal now?

I'm confused. You tell people to throw away their shiat, then they buy their shiat back from thrift shops that got their shiat? And then realize maybe throwing away your shiat isn't that important?

How many diapers are under the sofa, Marie?

My mother, who raised six children, would beg to differ. But, nicotine was her only drug. The house smelled of second-hand smoke, but back in the 1950s just about everything did.

Today while unpacking my office/library (we moved into this house in October), I found the copy of the Tidying Up book that some joker had given my husband several years ago.

I shelved it between my Harry Potter and the Dragonriders of Pern collections. There wasroom on my nonfiction/reference shelf, but I didn't feel that was appropriate.

Feelings about material possessions are more complicated than "joy/no joy" and landfills are much less of a solution than most people think.

I adore children--I really do. I realize that they are our future, and every time you are kind to a child, you make the future a better place.

But as a single guy, they strike me as roommates who make a lot of noise, make lots of messes that they won't clean up and never pay their rent.

We have a secret.

We tidy and sort things, but cleaning? That's $320 a month.

I respect their efficiency and thoroughness, which is why I've advocated for bumping the bi-weekly amount again and again.

So yeah, the secret is people will clean your house for a fair wage.

It was a lie about the happy part, of course, but she had that sign.

Homes should be messy if your priorities are in order. This doesn't mean that it needs to be unhygienic and dirty. Who gives a fark if clothes are all put away and what not, especially when it is things that are used everyday. Sure when we have guests over I might pick up some crap, but let's be real, the people that would have a problem with some things being a little messy are people I don't want in my home. If you have to put up a front to entertain guests and create an atmosphere that is a lie, why waste your time with those people?

Trash and dishes? Yeah, do that. Cleaning is important and I am a big fan of purging. Where people get paralysis is letting go of sentimental things, getting rid of things they "might use" because they cost money, and of course not wanting to throw things away. My wife and I have an understanding that she gets a month to try to sell or donate stuff. If it is still sitting there after a month, I get to throw it away. Sure, it isn't environmentally friendly and someone might be able to have a use for it but if it means just sitting in a pile for years causing stress, it is better to just toss it.

I'm with you. Because I work part-time (flexibility is awesome when parenting younger kids), I tidy up on a more regular basis, but when I am cleaning, the priority is the trash. And because we often go through things to weed out what we don't need, it's hard to stay on top of things.

As far as getting rid of stuff, your wife might have good luck posting on BuyNothing groups. You post a picture/description and more often than not, you'll have another person agree to come pick it up from your porch. Last week, my kids went through their art supplies and decided to only keep about a third of the markers, crayons, etc; the rest got picked up by the mom of a three-year-old who likes to draw. Your wife might already know about it, but in case she doesn't, figured I'd mention it.

My ex and her friends jumped on this bandwagon years ago, and all they could talk about was how many bags of clothes they donated.
Then about six months later-- first a trickle and then a steady stream-- where is that top? did i really give that away? DAMMIT!

My MiL is like this.  She is obsessed with interior decorating to the point of massive illogical impracticality. Her bathroom was so pristine whenever I used it I just dried my hands on my pants because I was too afraid to get a towel out of place.  Sadly my wife is starting to turn into her but luckily the other three slobs in the house are dragging her back to Earth.
