Ukraine aid links

A month and a half into the war (day 44), many of us felt helpless and listless at not being able to do more to help, so here is a list of things that we can do.

There are plenty of charities that could use your help, but even if you don't have spare cash lying about, there are still things you can do, so keep reading

If you know any Ukrainians in need or in the war zone, see the top of the (continued) post for links for them.

You can donate directly to Ukraine if you want to help them make more videos of tanks blowing up. (See 'military aid' below)

There are lots of humanitarian groups working to feed the displaced people and even their pets.  (See 'humanitarian aid')

And even if you're not in a position to give cash, you might be able to find a group that needs some volunteer help or attend a protest.  If you don't have a group in your area specifically helping Ukraine, you can likely still find other worthwhile causes.  And there are groups that have tasks that can be done online or over the phone without even leaving your home. (See 'other notes' (in the "continued" post)). Even just calling politicians to remind them that we need to support Ukrainians.

You can call out dumbasses online who are spreading russian propaganda and otherwise spewing toxic crap.  (Or join groups like NAFO) And by ignoring or blocking the assholes on here who try that shiat. (Make sure to watch for other threads, not just the daily one)

And you can even support capitalism, and buy stuff made in Ukraine or are fundraisers for the war effort.  (See 'buying stuff', (in the "continued" post)

This is in no way a comprehensive list.  This is just groups that Farkers have mentioned in past threads.  (Which I had to start trimming to comply with Fark's 100 link limit per comment before splitting it in two). If you want a more comprehensive list, see https://supportukrainenow.org . They also have links to specific groups by country that you're coming from for protests, taking in refugees, etc.  You might also find interesting charities at https://standwithukraine.today/ukrainian-charities/ and https://old.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/tgc00n/want_to_support_ukraine_heres_a_list_of_charities/

I make no claims about any of these groups.  I've trimmed a few that people have said might be suspect, but I have no personal knowledge of any of them.  If you feel the need to vet them before donating, see GuideStar or Charity Navigator. (Links to them below). Or see Forbes' list at https://www.forbes.com/advisor/personal-finance/donate-relief-to-ukraine/

If you're currently employed by a large-ish company, they may have a donation matching program.  You can check https://doublethedonation.com/ but it's also worth contacting your HR to ask even if they're not listed there.

Brits and such should consider donating to UK charities as they can get 25% 'Gift Aid' matching from the UK government.

If you've gained profits from stocks, consider donating the stocks directly, so they get the full value and you don't need to hold some back to pay capital gain taxes.

Other notes & ways to help:

You should check to see if your employer has a donation matching program.  Some may be listed at https://doublethedonation.com/. Some employers may even be able to set up an automatic donation.

Some donations may be eligible to get you nudie pics:  https://teronlyfans.com/english/

Many charities list how to donate through bank transfers.  This may cost a couple of dollars depending on your bank, but keeps them from losing significant fees to credit card companies.

If you want to fund reporting of the war:  https://www.gofundme.com/f/kyivindependent-launch;  https://www.patreon.com/kyivindependenthttps://dattalion.com/donate-to-dattalion/

If you can't donate money, but have free time and the health to do it, consider volunteering your time to groups to help them free up money to spend in Ukraine.

You can search Volunteer Match ( https://www.volunteermatch.org/search?v=true&k=Ukraine&onloc=false ), Charity Navigator ( https://www.charitynavigator.org ) or GuideStar (https://www.guidestar.org/NonprofitDirectory.aspx) for terms like Ukraine, and look find a group near you that needs extra hands.  If you can't find a Ukraine specific one, pick another one with a mission that you support.

If you want to donate drones, medical supplies and such:  https://www.mriyaaid.org/aid

If you want to have a supper club or bake sale fundraiser and would like recipes:  https://www.cookforukraine.orghttps://klopotenko.com/en ;https://www.valyastasteofhome.com/12-authentic-ukrainian-recipes/

There are even ways to contribute online, for the home bound people:

Help Ukrainians practice conversational English:  https://mobile.twitter.com/OlenaChek/status/1544689140725325825 or https://www.enginprogram.org

If you're a US citizen, call your congress critters and let them know how you feel:  (202) 224-3121.  Or if you want to sponsor refugees:  https://ukraine.welcome.us.  But you may want to try to find an NGO, as if you directly sponsor them you're financially responsible for two years.  (https://www.uscis.gov/ukraine ; So tell your representatives to give them refugee status).

If you would like to avoid doing business with companies still operating in russia, see https://www.dontfundwar.com

If you use streaming music services, search for Ukrainian artist playlists, so you'll give them a fraction of a penny and maybe find some new artists to support more directly.  See https://linkpeak.io/l/defendukrainehttps://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLL7h_otRo2v9j1fPVfVkibCjFbmLlThjx

If you watch cam sites, consider supporting Ukrainians (although some may currently be displaced, others may tag Ukraine to show support because they're from neighboring countries, and some of the most in need of support may not currently have internet access; I don't have any sort of definitive list)

There are also efforts to DDoS Russian websites such as the "Ukraine IT Army", but I'm not linking to them to avoid risking the mods removing this whole list.

Also see the official Ukrainian website on ways to support their effort:  https://war.ukraine.ua/support-ukraine/

I bet she's crazy you know where

2023-01-28 7:52:01 AM
I'm having a bit of a time.

I got yelled at, rather heavily, for suggesting that there's some folks that are better than you at logistics deciding if specific hardware should be sent to Ukraine.

Keep in mind, NATO countries. You know, had 50 years to work out how to supply a variety of hardware on a battlefield while the USSR pushes 3,000 tanks through the Fulda Gap...

Aww fark it, screw nice.

Atoda so. A farkin Toda so.

I did. And I'll farking BET there's crews already ready.

There's people whose entire profession is working out how to get hardware from several different nations working together. Try to recall Ukraine started getting serious about learning from NATO in 2014. You think no one was working on this? Are you actually stupid? THIS IS NATO. This is literally WHAT THEY DO. It's why there's NATO standard 5.56mm ammo, ffs.

You bet against the kings of logistics? Are you insane?

Also, no one announces shiat's going to Ukraine until it's ready. They didn't say "go" until they had tanks and crews. You'd think HIMARS would have been a clue, they don't warn the enemy when a new capability is coming, they just put it in the field and THEN say "hey, you like this?"

Leopards and M1s are going to Ukraine. I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I'd bet that there's more than a battalion worth of armor in the pipe.

Russia is going to have a Bad Time (tm).

Highly motivated crews with good gear? Dude, I don't CARE if the Abrams have the DU plate, there's going to be 2 varieties of highly mobile tanks with modern fire control and sensors on the field.

What I don't know is if those tanks have IVIS, or whatever's the modern equivalent. If they can integrate that into Ukraine's C3I, hooo boy.

I don't remember if I posted this a couple of days ago, but we get a different crowd on here on the weekends.

Umm,

Umm.

I'm just a bit too young to have been shot at in Vietnam, but that white dress... she's just big enough up top to bring 2 grenades into a bar in Saigon*. Also, she looks AMAZING.

*Ask my dad. As much as he liked the ladies, he left a bar in Saigon because a big-titted local girl in a white dress looked too good to be true, and the place blew up a few minutes later.

My father was a bit farked up, but then, having strangers try to kill you might do that.

Man, are we planning to send about 100,000 therapists to Ukraine? I really hope someone's working on that. And a farking shipfull of drugs.

For you data nerds, two things (possible repeats, possibly only interesting to me, and so on)

One:

Maybe it's just me but looking at Harlee's 30 RA charts, every one has the same basic shape save four: UAVs, missiles, logistics and meat.

The logistics curve demonstrates Ukraine's stated strategy.

The UAV/missile curves demonstrate the orc's desperation.

The meat curve demonstrates the orc's insanity.

Aside from all that the similarity of the bulk of equipment losses suggests the orcs are using "combined arms" but suck at it.

Two:

I seem to remember seeing this guy's work earlier on but he's kept it up and it's very enlightening:

In further corrections to official Russian government statements:

* Kim Yo Jung, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has stated in a recent speech that pasta sauce wrestling is a noble and enduring human behavior and as such should be protected by the UNESCO World Heritage agency for future generations. "As a deputy leader of a repressive Stalinist regime, I like nothing better than to relax after a stressful day of torturing dissents by slipping into a nice pool of alfredo sauce with mushrooms and frolic with my designated drowning victims for the day." At press time, clarifications on this translation had not been issued by the North Korean ambassador to Moscow, although this station did receive a signed photograph of a bundle of spaghetti noodles being crushed between her powerful thighs.

* Despite some claims, the Ministry of Defense has not approved the use of battle puppies armed with explosives in the Special Military Operation in Ukraine. While small dogs can be trained to run underneath enemy tanks and explode, there is no reason to raise the ire of animal rights activists in Moscow when newly raised conscripts can be trained to do the same thing.

* Despite some previous concerns, the German Defense Minister yesterday ruled out sending advanced fighter aircraft to Ukraine, due in part out of concerns that they might actually be flown. "These aircraft are the state of the art, the most absolutely advanced examples of military technology available, and you want to actually use them?" he asked incredulously in a recent interview. "Like, maybe even break them? Are you serious? You could dent them or something if you're not careful! They might even get muddy!" Follow-up questions could not be heard over the sound of palms meeting faces, but industry analysts have commented that this does, in fact, prove one point: the Germans love David Hasselhoff.

PTSD is gonna be bad for our Ukrainian friends.

The suicides will be epidemic on the Orc side. Think,of how many US vets are lost to it daily, and that's with a generally less horrific experience and with a support system in place.

Orc BMP-1 gets plinked by artillery

https://mobile.twitter.com/PaulJawin/status/1619231640756293639

Remember back in the heady days of failed Orc river crossings when the shills claimed that Russia would never stoop so low to use the BMP-1 in combat, so the slaughter HAD to be Ukrainian? Well, so far they've lost 270 of them.

Combined with the unknown bmp-1/2 s, the special models, and the BMP-2 fleets, they've lost 1400+ of these oit of production shiatcans.

man i wish.  so sore and tired.  and hungry lol.  Hopefully I can knock the rest of it out early today since they won't be here for hours with the power out.  When they told us they had to finish the job yesterday they said it would only take 2 hours.  It took 7.  But it is done.  so once caffeine kicks in I will start on the cake.  cupcakes are easy since just make frosting, frost cupcakes, stick topper on, done.  :)

I like logistics.  fark the military equipment.... I'll drool over the TRANSPORTERS.  Closest thing to a "sexy truck" to me.  I'd rather live in a world where we built and consumed locally but, that isn't here yet.

Yeah last baking order the oven died just before and I had to traipse back and forth to the neighbors to bake the cookies.  This time the electric was an issue.  Loud pop, smoke alarm went off...at 6:30am.  They had to replace and move the breaker box.  Took two full days.

If I hadn't already decided not to take any more orders (the stress is making me sick again and I do not want to end up in the hospital again), the universe farking with my ability to bake twice would be a big "you should stop now".

I still think Delenn's line toward the end of Severed Dreams is one of the best written pieces of dialog in TV history:

Delenn: This is Ambassador Delenn of the Minbari. Babylon 5 is under our protection. Withdraw... ...or be destroyed.

Earth Captain: Negative. We have authority here. Do not force us to engage your ship.

Delenn: Why not? Only one human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari fleet.

He is behind me.
You are in front of me.
If you value your lives, be somewhere else.

Ugh.

I had a power outage last year that was 12+ hours because there was a bad splice below my neighbor's driveway.

And the ground going bad, plus the low voltage, plus the lack of a grounding rod caused power to go through the cable TV and catch on fire.  Luckily, the panel is in the master bedroom and I smelled a candle like smell, and was awake enough to investigate it and find the fire in the basement / crawl space.

... but it brings things into perspective when we complain about these sorts of things, and some Ukrainians haven't had power for 6+ months

Umm,

PTSD is gonna be bad for our Ukrainian friends.

The suicides will be epidemic on the Orc side. Think,of how many US vets are lost to it daily, and that's with a generally less horrific experience and with a support system in place.

This bothers the shiat out of me.

My father was one of roughly 5,000 Canadian servicemen who volunteered to serve in Vietnam.

This happened by making a request to your CO, if you were approved you were given leave with the understanding that you continued to "serve" as far as accumulated benefits and time in grade. You went to Washington, DC on a .gov jet, and signed up as a "civilian contractor".

You weren't given a combat role, approval meant you had a technical skill they needed. Dad was good with radio. All of it, from the LF shiat no one thinks about all the way up to microwave.

My father ended up as a member of the 502 communications squadron, out of Phu Lam. Side note: I've seen pics of the barracks, it had a sign appropriate to a certain house in New Orleans.

I wish I could find the pics to show you. There was one that was the diagram that showed how a microwave line of sight relay got from someplace to Phu Lam, and there was a mountain in the middle of it, with a "beam" labeled "magic".

Guys racked out next to the tube amps, because the amps got air conditioning.

Dad with his M3, and apparently they made 90(!) round mags for it. He had 1 in the gun and 1 on his webbing. It was basically the "longcat" of magazines. When they say "stick mag", yeah, it was a stick. This pic was in front of a line of stupas running up a mountain.

A really farked up picture of the back of dad's head and a 2 1/2 ton truck. And a Polish guy. And the VC trying to come around the column, taken by a guy who got stuck under a tree after a mortar dropped said tree on him. And a couple of dead guys.

They would send techs out on convoys to unfark comm relays that went dead, and they'd be escorted. Apparently most of the time it was dull work. Find the broken repeater, fix it.

Sometimes there were VC with a couple of mortars and a DShK.

We only did "show and tell" once. He really wanted me to understand why he was so farked up, but he had a hard time. He had a 9-track he'd transposed from when he was walking around Saigon after curfew with a recorder in his pocket. I've never heard fear in his voice until then.

He was a  "civilian" who took serving in the RCAF because frankly, he was me but 50 years earlier... high school dropout who blew up one too many science labs. I went into machinery, he went into radio.

As much as I hate Dittybopper's politics, he's one of my dad's contemporaries. It's entirely possible dad passed intercepts to ditty.

I do get why dad used to get so incandescently angry when we went out on weekends to fix repeaters (he took a job with the phone company when I was born), and we'd find a can with a bullet hole in it.

Apparently he got angry enough in the bar one night the local hunters quit shooting repeater cans. He wasn't big. Tall, but not big.

You don't piss off someone who's killed people. Not because they've killed someone before, but because they've been forced into that headspace.

He wanted me to understand, and he tried to tell me. Fortunately or not, I went into industrial emergency response. I kinda, sorta, get it. Fark up and people die, so don't fark up.

I've left the field, because after 20 years I'm kinda broken. I think I get what he was trying to tell me.

I have a lot of bad days. I took jobs where I'd have to work, and I worked. You ever see a depressed skull fracture that's a perfect imprint of a hand sledge, because someone dropped one off the monkeyboards on a double, even though everyone told the punk to lanyard his shiat?

My issues ain't bupkiss compared to what these people are coming home to. There's going to be an entire nation of messed up parents, and messed up kids. I wish I could help, but I'm too busted myself to do that.

I'm going to go work there when the war's over. I run equipment, there'll be more work than they have bodies. I'll fix infrastructure. My union is worldwide, I told them I'll take a pay cut to be there. As long as my bills are paid, I'll be good.

And maybe I'll sit in a bar with some Ukrainians and buy them a drink and do my best to empathise with people who've been where doing it wrong kills people. It's not a nice place, but it's nice to know someone gets it.
