Boils down to the fact that Turkey is strategically (geographically) more important than Sweden.

Both nations have had a long history of conflict with Moscova, and even cooperated at times.

it was the Ottomans who gave Charles VII of Sweden refuge after the Russians prevailed at Poltava, effectively ending the Great Northern War. After that, Peter got cocky and declared war on the Ottomans, only to have his ass handed to him somewhere on the Danube in Hungary.

Charles had refused to ride with an army he didn't command, but when he heard Peter was on the ropes, he saddled up and rode into Hungary to convince the Sultan not to let Peter off the hook without returning the Neva delta (which would become SPB) to Sweden. He got to the camp to see the last of the Russian army disappear on the horizon towards Moscow. Womp womp.

History aside, Ergodan is just a prick and would burn a Koran in Stockholm himself if it gave him leverage. At some point, NATO has to decide if Turkey is friend or foe, and draw a line. It is not an easy call by a long shot.

I'm pretty certain if they didn't control the Sea of Marmara and the straits going from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea that NATO would have thrown them out a while ago, if they had ever let them in to begin with.

Is it? I'll grant you Turkish willingness to "hold onto" US nukes, and their sole access to the Black Sea is a big deal. I'll further grant it's unlikely that Sweden or Finland would ever agree to host nukes (Norway and Demark already won't), but if it comes to it, then between them, Russian shipping in the north just ain't going anywhere. You have to see it to really appreciate just how tight the straight is near Copenhagen. That leaves the arctic, and I would not bet against US subs in that one, even if the Russians really were as good as they say they are.

I know a guy who bought a used PDP-11 just to heat his home.  I loved that machine for the six months I had with it.  Almost no other users on it to slow things down.

I understand that. The Great Northern War was about control of the Baltic, which at the time was a Swedish lake (as much as the Black Sea was an Ottoman lake). Russia had to trade through Archangel up on the white sea, and Peter loved boats. You can only get so much quality sailing out on the Dnieper or various lakes in summertime. Hence the annexation of the Neva delta and an alliance with Denmark, which also resented Sweden's hegemony. You can't exaggerate how powerful Sweden was at the time.

In the current environment of sanctions and embargoes, I can't see a peaceful Russia being denied passage in and out of the Baltic, nor can I imagine NATO membership being a factor in Sweden and Denmark's maritime policy.

Turkey, on the other hand is a stones throw from the Caucasus, the Levant, and Iraq.

If Russia were peaceful, there'd be no reason for sanctions, embargoes, or denying them passage in and out of the Baltic. But yeah, good point about proximity to the middle east. Just wish we could trust Turkey. Like at all.

It's troubling that Erdogan is denying Sweden entry into NATO, and engineering the specific flawed propaganda.

A Turkish Koran would be excluded from any pilgrimage to Mecca as being heretical, evil, and subversive -- so the staged act of burning a Koran in Sweden to support a current Turkish government is mixing way too many metaphors and trying to preach to too many different choirs.

Turkey and Iran, back in the day, were the scholars of Islam, not Arabia.  Those two countries kept their own language, and in fact Turkey completely rewrote their alphabet away from Arabic script.  Most Turks practice a much more liberal form of Islam, too.  Erdogan's base are the fundamentalists.

Tbh, Turkey probably knew... they're a terrible member of NATO, Erdogan sabotages elections, and they don't follow anti-corruption rules. Also, they threatened the US base at Incirlik when political tensions got high... cut off power, circled the base... they're just a shiatty ally who'll turn on you the second they see your back.
