Difficulty: Americans are addicted to cheap Chinese products and China is addicted to American money. Both of which go away if there is a war.

A war over what? Cheap plastic crap isn't cheap enough? They refuse to abide by climate accords? They corner the market on trace minerals?

People said the same thing about Sherman.

He doesn't have a say in it. He's a general, not the commander-in-chief, and if he thinks of making moves to bring it all about then you string him up on the National Mall as an example of what happens when you decide to go it alone.

China does seem to be getting more sensitive about Taiwan. If they decide to invade it could drag us into war. I hope Ukraine convinces them to chill the fark out.

Yea. I know. It still needs to be said so we know what the standards ought to be, I guess. Hell if I know anymore.

He may think he's just firing up his subordinates in an old school style, but it shows he never really paid attention in his professional military education. But since he was on the road to General, he received treatment differently than other officers, and that can have deleterious effects on the ego.  One does not simply go this far out from the State Department let alone the presidential administration. My bet is he's on a plane from Scott to Andrews today and he'll be retired by Monday.

They'll just walk up to the gas pumps once all they have left are iffy nukes.

I've run into counter-terrorism types, legitimate ones, who swore that we'd get another 9/11 attack 'very soon, it's inevitable.'

I think these guys project their personalities through their work, either aggressively or neurotically. This Air Force guy -- and I dont trust any Air Force guys -- want to fly their pretty jets around, probably after watching Top Gun: Maverick, and so try to will it into place. The counter-intel guy was so ragged with imagining scenarios they seeme ready to materialize for him and everyone else.

I would agree. And the guy in charge of moving cargo is hardly the one to be calling the shots on combat.

Back in about 97 I predicted this would happen in the next 25 years...if he's right, I won't be that far off.  But as people have said above, we're addicted to their cheap labor and they're addicted to our consumerism.

Taiwan is probably what would spark a war.  However, no matter what his credentials, he doesn't have a magic crystal ball.  It is entirely possible he is projecting his own prejudice into it.  Certainly a war could occur but let's hope it doesn't.

How the f*ck could anyone know that. That is like predicting the weather in 2025.

China is getting seriously wrecked right now due to Covid. I doubt they want to multiply their woes by starting a war with the US.

China is heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels so the first thing we would do in a war with China is blockade their imports which would bring most of China to a halt.

Difficulty: Xi is not as popular in China as he thinks. He's facing a lot of opposition from his own people. I'm just spitballin' here, but I have a feeling that if Xi gets too warmongery, even his warmongery generals might tell him to STFU.

I am not an expert on the CCP, but I doubt they want a war more than anybody else does. Their economy depends on foreign business.

It would be catastrophic for our country. With all the crises we've had over the past 20 some odd years, if we lose that war with China, everything will fall apart.

Hey now, Maverick, Goose and Iceman are Naval Aviators, not Air Force. The giant farking carriers out front shoulda told you.

The Air Force guys are probably just fluffing their feathers since TFG took low orbit out of their portfolio.

Precisely the opposite will happen. They will rally to the flag and Xi will get a huge boost in his approval rating. Happens every time.

There are no challenges so great that America cannot grapple with them, when we get our shiat together.

But we half ass our way through everything except war, so we never really get anywhere.

And i think we all know which half of our ass is the problem.

A war over who can fund their military complex better

Can't happen. There might be limited fighting, but nothing like using nukes. And for one main reason. The US could virtually cut off China in terms of ship traffic. Not only would China become an economic disaster, but it would also lose like 90% of its oil from the Middle East if the US started blockading tankers.. Even China's vast world wide fishing fleets could be targeted.

Although people don't tend to think of China this way, the truth is, that China is every much like an island. Surrounded by huge mountain ranges and deserts, marine commerce is by far it's most important source of revenue.

Just like to point out that we know of 2 Generals named Flynn who believe crazy shiat.  Not saying this guy is wrong, just that being a General isn't enough to buy into this theory on his say so alone.

Thoreny: if we lose that war with China, everything will fall apart.

Realistically, there is no winning. China want Taiwan specifically and more broadly wants control and influence over East Asian. Invading an island that's been prepared to be invaded for decades is a great way to enter a world of pain, especially since Western Powers would want to make an issue of it. The island would be trashed, which would annihilate its actual value for anything other than symbolic purposes. If the exchange remained non-nuclear, the US already has assets that it can project in that part of the world. China probably does have a lot of the tech because they've been stealing it for years, but there's a real question as to how much of it they've actually built and operated. It would be ugly. Taiwan would be a smoking crater either way and our and their economic power might be ruined by it, whether or not the PRC flag flies over Taipei.

Everyone on all sides already understands this. Everybody is just playing a waiting game for some part of the circumstance to change.
