(Business Insider)   Shocking pretty much no one, leaked info indicates Musk personally ordered a lefty Twitter account shut down. He has the right to do this, but over to the right we can talk about how his so-called "absolutist" position on free speech is absolutely BS   (businessinsider.com) divider line

The right-wing leader of India, Modi, requested Musk take down a video that was unflattering toward him. Musk, with a Dalmatian-like desire to please dictators, did so immediately.

What is there to talk about, smitty? He is an apartheid asshole born with an emerald spoon in his ass. Of course he wants to stomp out liberal rhetoric while pretending like it's the divergent viewpoint running contrary to the masses.

He is just so farking stupid trying this bullshiat now. And on a social media site no less. The tactic worked years ago when data was primarily shared via means from town criers up through weekly newspapers. Now? Data is a drug, the internet is a syringe, and we are all addicts walking around with computerized tourniquets on so we ALWAYS have a vein ready.

Twitter is not the singular, digital town square and he cannot control nationwide ideas and discourse simply by rubbing his herpetic junk on the code base and application gateways. Even before he tried to be clever as the personification of a 20 year old meme folks saw the miasma approaching and new services arose to take the Blue Birb site's place.

And that is a need that has become even more prominent after he hurt-hurried in the door and started chugging on fascist dick like it contained the serum of eternal farking life. His inflammatory rhetoric only served to chase away advertisers and get the company into more lawsuits than he can imagine. All while shaving more than 70 percent off the value of his single largest cash cow. Visitors, important public accounts, and (most importantly) advertisers are fleeing the burning boat in droves.

But still he pushes onward, like the pissy, entitled, delusional, idiotic, neo-Nazi man-child of privilege that he is.

For all the gnashing of teeth, people still seem to be using Twitter an awful lot. Is it like a drug? I don't get it. It's been a shiatpile since it started but the very slow among us seem to have just realized it.

The only surprising thing about Twitter these past few months is Trump's astonishing adherence to someone's discipline by not posting once his account was reactivated.

Twitter is the same as it ever was: arbitrarily enforced rules, opaque rules, one man in charge, no accountability to anyone. The only thing that has changed is the man in charge is someone no one likes. It wasn't some bastion of free thought before Musk bought it and it certainly isn't now. It's just a clickbait farm where lesser-knowns can piggyback on better-knowns because there's no hierarchy outside of views.

I was hoping Musk would manage to kill Twitter, but people are so addicted to getting attention that it seems like no matter what he does, they're still going to use it. If you'd like to see a definition of this madness in action, I present this:

Fark user imageView Full Size

That's "Anonymous" - the collective hacktivist group - using Twitter as their main announcement mechanism to let everyone know about their displeasure about Musk banning a user from Twitter. They are an extremely active group, this was down their feed about 20 posts. They must post 100 times a day.

The call is coming from inside the house yet no one picks up on the irony.

This is the salient point.  For some, it's a part of the addictive neuro pathways on self-importance/narcissism, and for others this might even be their FIRST addiction.  But that shiat is R-E-A-L.   Algorithms designed for engagement are messed right up.

It can actually be a very useful source of information and connecting people, and there weren't many alternatives that did what Twitter did. As soon as Musk took over, others started popping up or getting boosts in popularity.

Meanwhile, Musk is chasing legitimate advertisers away by the truckload, breaking shiat (the notifications have been farked for a while now), doing shiat the original owners had already tried and had to abandon because it was stupid, getting sued left and right for not paying rent and platforming Nazis in nations where that's illegal, and generally digging the financial hole he's in deeper.

It's only a matter of time before Twitter collapses and there's a consensus on which of the competitors will replace it, in either order. In the meantime, it's still vaguely useful.

What, the idiot man-child who blundered himself into control of The Algorithm isn't magical or special, and is subject to the same manipulation-by-propaganda and biases and ratfarkery (like mass-reporting campaigns) you're exposed to in the toxic crapsludge that is The Feed?

Modi is in serious trouble because his #1 backer financially has been caught red handed in a multi billion dollar stock manipulation scheme and his companies (Adani group) are down over 20% the last few days.

I'm not arguing the rules aren't somewhat opaque; as you say that's true for a lot of tech companies. I'm saying they weren't enforced arbitrarily, at least not nearly to the extent they are now. The linked article is proof of this. Twitter used to take safety seriously, Musk dissolved the Safety and Trust Council.

Musk thought twitter was run by a bunch of woke lefties and bought the company to change that. He found he it was run by business people just trying to do their best to keep hate off their site, because that's bad for business.

Yep. The one universal lesson of social media is that moderation is very difficult and quite possibly impossible at scale. Musk has burned though billions slowly relearning that basic fact.

Well, no it wasn't, because those business people had no power to ban Trump, and it was arbitrary when it happened. They didn't have a "process" - they had an "excuse."

What confounds me is that people don't realize this. Musk just cleared out the committee middle-man. It's always up to the one person running Twitter.
