While I'm OK with an anti-mosquito laser - and fark you Bill Gates for never going commercial with the one you backed - the idea of wholesale insect slaughter outdoors concerns me.

Sure, pests eating our crops is an issue, but farms take up a lot of space and killing every insect that crosses them will utterly devastate entire ecosystems.

We're way ahead of you already.

Conventional insecticides are incredibly indiscriminate and just kill all kinds of bugs, which absorb the chemicals and themselves become toxic to anything that eats them. This is already being felt up the food chain but it's going to get more severe in coming decades.

A way of targeting specific insects in a specific area would actually be a massive improvement and could well allow populations to recover rather than letting the entire global ecosystem crash.  Precise laser targeting of problematic insects in farming areas could literally change the world for the better.

Using this technology, the concern of insects becoming resistant to pesticides would become no more

To be replaced with a concern of insects becoming resistant to blue lasers instead.

I have a 3000mW blue laser.  Also a room with a 4m high (13') ceiling.

I used to have spider problems up there.  Used to.

Do your fire extinguishers reach to 4m?

So, what the team did was find the weak spots where the moth is most vulnerable to a laser blast.

Yes. And it's an issue, because the lasers don't work on Saturday.
