"Mistakes were made, and I take full responsibility."

Translation for Bullsh*it-ese: "I didn't take them home, some idiot staffer of mine did."

And, just like Biden, Garland will appoint a special counsel without delay.

Right?

He has to know the Trump admin did Bad Things(tm).

Trump made me do it. He gave me these papers and siad, hide these for me. They're the proof of collusion witn Putin, including a tape of Putin asking me through a Russian translator for his shopping list of nuclear secrets

Is this one of those "I take full responsibility" things where once you've said it, it's supposed to be some kind of magical incantation that brings the whole matter to a close and you get to be outraged if someone says they want to you face actual consequences?

The whole point of the use of the passive voice in "Mistakes were made" is to remove the agent from the sentence & deny responsibility. Which makes the bit where he says "I take full responsibility" weird & disingenuous. idk what to make of it so I'll do what I normally do with Pence & pretend he doesn't exist until he does something I can do something about.

I'm betting he had to. It's not like anybody who's capable of getting a security clearance - let alone a top secret one - would help him steal lists of American agents or our continuity of government plans.

That statement is basically the vice presidency in a nut shell.

It's a instant promotion from regional obscurity to a household name.

The toast you're smelling is Joe (No regrets) Biden he didn't take responsibility either. Intelligent folks don't want dementia Joe or Orange Feces to run.

Massa Damnata: Easy to take responsibility when there are no consequences.

Why would there be consequences? "Willful retention" is literally where the crime occurs.

If I walk out the door at Home Depot with a bag of potting soil on the bottom of my cart, realize that I didn't get charged for it, and immediately take it back inside, I'm not a shoplifter, even if, yeah, it was technically a crime as soon as I left the building. Doubly so if I ask someone else to go over my receipt to make sure the rest adds up.

Meanwhile, another guy put a case of rechargable tools into his van and he's got it sitting in his garage and might be selling some on eBay. Only an idiot would look at the first guy and say that he's covering for the second.

the more severe the consequences, the more he will fight them.

Preet Bharara had a decent take on Pence being added to the mix, saying that to the extent politics plays any part in DOJ decisions (which Preet firmly believes it should not), they could absolve both Pence and Biden (due to immediate cooperation) while indicting TFG for obstruction and whatever else and perhaps blunt some of the inevitable criticism. I highly recommend his podcast.

That isn't what Pence said 2 weeks ago and called it a double standard where Trump was searched, and Biden cooperated.

Yet you fully take advatage of the "Biden standard" when you are found to have classified documents at your home

Pence is just a publicity whore who happens to have gotten lucky and made some headlines with this one. He's already drafting his next press release about how he's thinking about having a tuna salad sandwich for lunch tomorrow and hoping that goes nearly as well as this.

I'm still waiting for someone to say "thank the investigators for helping to find stuff I didn't know I had, because I have accumulated a bunch over my decades of service".

Pence's public acceptance of responsibility over his handling of the documents marks a departure from the reactions of both Trump, his former boss, and Biden in their own cases.

Yeah, fark you, Yahoo. Biden did the same farking thing Pence did. There is absolutely ZERO difference between Biden's and Pence's situations. They both came forward on their own, and are cooperating.

And this is the weak shiat they're using to say Biden is as bad as Trump?

Biden has said he was surprised to learn the documents had been found but had "no regrets" about how the public was informed.

I didn't say there should be criminal consequences, I said there were no consequences. It didn't impress me that he took full responsibility when there was no consequence for doing so. I don't have any idea what such consequences should be, that's why it's an empty statement. Full responsibility should be an admission that you recognize that taking responsibility might have consequences, no?

And by taking full responsibility, he is saying that as the boss of that staffer, he accepts responsibility. Stop trying to turn this into what it isn't. He took responsibility, move the fark on. Quit trying to parse his every action in life as some kjnd if superviillan plot. This place is getting as wacky as a right wing echo chamber.
