This is not my idea of a Writer's "Retreat":

FTFA: "The idea is that the house would be open to the public on Saturdays, "most of the year by appointment only," from noon until 4 p.m. Because the house is down a narrow cul-de-sac, visits would be capped at 10 people per hour. "

Does the family still own that old hotel in Colorado?

It needs to be preserved, because it's beautiful and historically important... but a writers retreat is an absurd idea. It's a tourist attraction. That's the opposite of a writer's retreat.

Make is a museum, which funds writer's scholarships.

Oh, you wanted the Writer's Retreat package?

Sorry, you're booked on the Writer's Nightmare.  Well, make the best of it, and please try not to disturb the ongoing parade of "writers" as they sit down, open their notebooks and take selfies for an hour.

I still love Preacher Casy's quote about something that you must never say to a preacher...In fact, it belongs in with any thinking of God or religion, I think.  It often runs through my mind at church.

"Before I knowed it, I was sayin' out loud, 'The hell with it! There ain't no sin and there ain't no virtue. There's just stuff people do. It's all part of the same thing.' . . . . I says, 'What's this call, this sperit?' An' I says, 'It's love. I love people so much I'm fit to bust, sometimes.' . . . . I figgered, 'Why do we got to hang it on God or Jesus? Maybe,' I figgered, 'maybe it's all men an' all women we love; maybe that's the Holy Sperit-the human sperit-the whole shebang. Maybe all men got one big soul ever'body's a part of.' Now I sat there thinkin' it, an' all of a suddent-I knew it. I knew it so deep down that it was true, and I still know it."
