House Majority Leader Steve Scalise(R) said Thursday that he didn't support the bill, instead telling The Hill that he backs making permanent the tax cuts in former President Trump'ssignature 2017 tax bill

So instead of supporting a completely stupid idea that though untried is obviously nothing more than an entirely transparent scheme to shift virtually the entire tax burden to the lower and middle classes, he supports something that's a completely stupid idea that's proven since its inception to be nothing more than a financial windfall to the wealthy who have no need for it.

I'm not seeing any evidence to support your headline, subby.

It will be a lot harder for corporations and rich people to evade a sales tax than income tax.

HugeMistake: It will be a lot harder for corporations and rich people to evade a sales tax than income tax.

Nah. They will just create non-profit purchasing consortiums. They won't pay a dime.

2023-01-27 8:35:12 AM
If they're GOP, then they've already failed the test.  Several times over.

2023-01-27 8:36:25 AM
No, they're all morons for one reason or another.

The Explode the Tax Code thing was never going to go anywhere.

2023-01-27 8:37:10 AM
The Democratic Party is also not entirely full of not morons. It evens out.

True.

Please tell me you're kidding.

Under the 'Fair Tax' stupidity, corporations don't pay the tax; it's the consumer who does. So the rich would get around the national sales tax by having a corporation, one that they own, buy their expensive goods and then rent those goods to themselves for next to nothing.

A high national sales tax would invite a black market to arise.

Yes...they are.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R) said Thursday that he didn't support the bill, instead telling The Hill that he backs making permanent the tax cuts in former President Trump's signature 2017 tax bill.

He want's to blow a multi-$trillion hole in the budget and send the deficit into the stratosphere.

The GOP is not entirely morons, the have plenty of imbeciles and idiots as well.

"We'd rather have the stupid idea that we're already rolling with. I mean, yeah, it could blow up in our faces, but people have had years to get pissed at that, and it's pretty much died down now. This new thing would just get folks all fired up again."

2023-01-27 8:46:02 AM
Subby, "You lie!". Just being a current member of the GOP qualifies them as morons. Anyone talking about a plan to make the tax system even more regressive thinks that the majority of the electorate are also morons. On that point, they may be correct.

Along with a fair chunk who know exactly what they're doing, just want they want to do is terrible for most people.

It sounds like Mein Pillow is going to be elected GOP leader today. Not all Republicans are idiots, but most idiots are Republicans.

No, you see the jokes on everyone else. He'll blow that hole in the budget and then vote to not raise the deficit cap. Too bad so sad! It's the one trick creditors don't want you to know.

So they want to biatch about the deficit and keep the Trump tax cuts. Geee it's almost like their more intent on the show than the substance.

2023-01-27 8:53:11 AM
Hear me out: why can't we have a national sales tax for luxury goods/vice/electronics and income tax as well?

We have a huge deficit. For every dollar we spend 41 cents of it comes from issuing debt.

2023-01-27 8:53:18 AM
They don't want to abolish the tax code, they want to abolish the IRS.

2023-01-27 8:53:36 AM
I like the idea. Bob earns $7.25/he federal minimum wage. He buys $100 of food for his family and pays $30 tax. Buffy whose trust fund provided him with $2.5m per year buys the same groceries and pays the same tax. Leaving Buffy much more money to donate to Republican super PAC and dark money. So fair

I'm not surprised that they can't agree on anything. They'll have to be a lot smarter to get bills that won't die in the Senate.

Of all the stupid ideas, a national sales tax is hardly the stupidest...only because we are choking our planet with plastic crap we use once or don't even need.

"Economic growth" is cancerous at a certain concentration.

They're all tax cheats and have little desire to work out how to game a new system.

Rich people spend a far lower proportion of their money on things subject to a sales tax than poor people do. Plus, since this thing is written by their lobbyists, ways for them to avoid it are unfortunately written in.

You missed a step.  Here's the plan:

1. Blow a multi-trillion hole in the budget
2. Send deficit into the stratosphere
3. Blame Biden

I'll play your silly game and offer amendments, every stock trade and dividend payout is considered a sale and gets hiat with the same 30% sales tax.

No, it's pretty frickin' stupid.  I can't think of a more regressive tax that disproportionately punishes the poor for buying necessities like food, clothing, and energy, which are at the bottom of a wealthy person's priorities, after buying super yachts, Gulfstreams, Kensington condos, and politicians.

The gop really stepped in it with this stupid idea.

The democrats could stand to take a page from the gop playbook though.  When they back away from it, even if they never supported it, hang it around their necks anyway. Slap them in the face with it like it's a fait accompli from now til election day. Make them deny their support, to keep it in the public's mind and keep the gop on its  heels.

Then do the same with repeal of social security and medicare.

I would agree, except poor people aren't really the ones injured here (until the GOP defunds Medicaid & SSI etc.). They don't have any money to begin with, and many of them receive public aid, food stamps, etc.

It's the upper middle class and those who make a bit too much to qualify for assistance who will hurt the most (I'm taking it for granted that there is no longer a functioning middle class in America...fight me.)

Boring. Bills that pass the Senate and get signed are BORING. Bills that push hot button issues or advocate unrealistic notions get you on the news and fire up the common clay.

/Is fixed up common clay just pots?

It would put every day trader in the US out of business in a day.

Too bad. I was hoping Congress would pass this with all Republican votes.
Oh well. They'll find other ways to faceplant and pratfall as this term drags on.

If you've ever actually been poor and on assistance, you know what I mean. Toothpaste you couldn't afford before isn't going to become more affordable because the price went up 15%. Food stamps and medicaid don't cover more than necessities.

You are actually better off in many parts of America being poor and unemployed than being a "working stiff" who makes too much to qualify for help and who has to pay for his own food and medical.

And if the working people can't afford those prices, guess what? Those prices come down or the businesses making the overpriced products go under.

I have yet to hear from any of these "fair" tax loons what would happen to Social Security once their crackpot bill became law and eliminates the Payroll Tax. They don't want to admit that it would kill Social Security within a few months as soon as funding was cut off, condemning millions of elderly & disabled people to become instantly homeless.

No, it's full of inhuman monsters dedicated to crushing anyone different under their bootheel.

And that's EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN.  Without fail.  Your grandparents.  Your brother in law.  Your best friend from high school.  If they vote for Republicans, they are okay with people being liquidated in camps in large numbers.

And you're advocating for burying that section of the population in penury.  There have been dozens of studies done on this, go read them, they will more eloquently explain to you why it's a regressive tax that disproportionately impacts the poorest segments of society.
