It dawned on me the other day that animals, including farm animals, have more rights when it comes to pregnancy complications then women in some states. Farmers will do what they can to preserve the cow if a calf is threatening the life of the mom. Women in these states are less than a cow.

As a former ranch kid, the only area where the cow has it worse is there is no pain meds given to cows during or after C-sections.

It isn't "red states vs. blue states" it's progress vs. conservatism.

Sometimes a hypothetical zygote has more rights, if the story about a woman with rheumatoid arthritis (and not pregnant) being denied her methotrexate prescription is accurate.

The biggest wtf of these backward conservative communities is that, not only do they not want to do anything to make their community an attractive place to be for anyone worth anything, but they actively fight to be regressive.

Then they look for any external scapegoat for why their community is shrinking, as nobody who grows up there wants to stay.

Red states have no shortage of attractive people. They tend to be in the south and warm so they attract the young and sometimes dumb to beaches and college. Of course those are often the blue pockets if you view an election map. If it went straight numbers in an election not the bullshiat we have with electoral maps. Many wouldn't be red states with the whole land doesn't vote thing.

Totally unworkable, but I would love to see some sort of push to prevent that kind of thing. Like ... Registered Republican from another state? Sorry. We reserve our abortion appointments for people who aren't part of the problem. Don't like it? Go back to your own state and vote accordingly to change things. In the meantime, enjoy the kid you clearly don't want to have.

I'm guessing that red states will continue to crank out sub-standard, meth/alcohol stunted vermin born to trailer trash single mothers knocked up by out of work wife beaters like they have been for the last century. Or 20 years after trailers were first manufactured.

But they've got jeebus in their hearts and vacuum in their brains.

Not that there is a stereotype when it seems to always be true.

Sure, if you get it preapproved through their particular criteria within a specific amount of time with just the correct language and you've gone through the correct referral process.  You're still dealing with an insurance company.  Oh yeah, and the copays and deductibles and travel approval through specific vendors, etc.

Makes sense, from a medical payout view, day trip and an abortion is WAY cheaper than paying out for even a birth with no complications much less one that has any complications.

I am honestly surprised insurance companies haven't been actively lobbying for pro-choice policies for that alone.

Yep.  Can't wait to hear stories about people getting denied cause they didn't get a referral/authorization before going out of state.  Or BCBS seeing the out of state and denng just cause they don't cover out of state.

[shrug]

They're higher for black and Hispanic women, of course; but they're also higher for po' w'ite women; and higher for poor whites than for wealthy blacks and Hispanics. Oddly enough, the quality of healthcare available to the mother is what determines maternal and neonatal mortality over race; but you knew that.

What they want is for poor people to die; or rather, they want black people to die and don't care that it means losing lots of undesireable white people in the process. They're not really "our" kind of people, dear.

Because insurance companies are math driven. Sometimes the math is cold, like approving more tests instead of treatment because Nanna's demographic has a 50% mortality rate in 6 months. Sometimes, the math happens to work out for justice, because a $400 plane ticket from Cincinnati to Boston, $200 in car rentals, and 3 nights in a $100 hotel are way cheaper than an untreated miscarriage that does permanent uteri damage costing hundreds of thousands of dollars in treatment and recovery.

In many of these places the elections are still not even close. I get that there's a ton of voter suppression and gerrymandering, but Rs still win by double digit percentages on a regular basis.

Because if you get pregnant, it's a risky kind of thing.  If you've got family history or other factors that makes it likely you'll hav ea high risk pregnancy, you might not want to take that chance if you know you won't have access to a procedure to put an end to the condition that may prove fatal or crippling to you.

Lots easier to get a dog.

Those funds always eventually end up with rich people regardless of the political leanings of a place.  But in the red states the poor don't even get to touch the money once; it just gets funneled directly into "Christ-centered rehabilitation facilities" run by Buford T. Nepotism.  He's the governor's cousin, and he dang sure knows how to straighten those homeless teens right up!

Yeah, they are.  Mostly it's women who know they are in a high-risk catergory for having a borked pregnancy (genetic issues, using IVF, history of ectopic implantation, difficulties in maintaining a healthy fetus, etc etc etc) who would be thinking twice.  Conceiving a baby and carrying it all the way to term is not easy or "natural" for a sizeable fraction of women.  If I was looking to have a kid with those sorts of issues, I'd want to be in a state where getting a dying fetus out of my uterus before I go septic isn't an issue.

Before the advent of modern medicine, a pregnancy or delivery gone wrong was the #1 killer of women of child bearing age, by a big margin.  That's why you see all the ladies' tombstones in old fashioned cemeteries where age at death is like 25 yrs old, with a little teeny baby grave right next to them.
