Schindler's List is less emotionally draining than it is blatantly manipulative.

natazha: Zero for ten. Schindler's List is the only one I've even heard of.

Many of these were nominated for Oscars, were written by the world's most best selling author, and or had high profile actors in it. This was the most obvious list short of just being "Old Yeller" ten times over

1.  Requiem for a Dream:  Agreed.  Even the scene with Jennifer Connolly and a double-ended dildo can't get me to watch that again.

2.  The Road.  Oh god.

3.  The Green Mile:  What?  Disagree.

4.  The Hurt Locker:  Again:  what?  It's not emotionally draining, certainly not for the genre, and in my opinion isn't even very good.

5.  Schindler's List:  Never again.

6.  Dancer in the Dark:  Never seen it but it sounds like hard going.

7.  Hotel Rwanda:  Never seen it, never want to.  I know the stories and am horrified by those alone, no need to add even more images to the ones in my head.

8.  Million Dollar Baby:  not a rewatchable film and is emotionally draining, but not enough for this list.

9.  Precious:  Holy sh*t, why is this not number one?  It's absolutely gruelling.  My ex-wife and I saw it and on the walk home we had to hug each other and have a weep.

10.  Melancholia:  Not seen it and was not a fan of Dunst until Hidden Figures.  I'm emotionally drained as it is, I don't need more.

For me, Saving Private Ryan should be on the list.  That was a brutal watch.  You don't think the beach scene can be topped and then oops!  Ribisi gets his liver shot out, then oops, then oops, then oops.  Unbearable.

Arguably the greatest anti-war film ever made but super depressing.

"Fun" fact, Wikipedia claims that this was released as a double feature with My Neighbour Totoro.

Imagine watching Graves of the Fireflies, one of the more depressing anime movies, just to follow it up with the most heart warming anime ever.

I mean, I can't imagine watching even one anime, so 2 is right out.

Should've been on the list at #1.

I've only been able to watch it once, but that's because the DVD committed suicide.  I'm not even joking.  No DVD player or PC I tried it in would play it after that initial viewing.  I even tried boiling it to see if maybe the glue between the layers needed to be reset.

I still haven't thrown it away, hoping maybe it'll magically work someday.  The $2 Vincent Price double feature I bought didn't work and sat on a shelf for over a year, and suddenly played fine, so who knows.

Try the 70s film "They shoot horses, don't they?" Great acting, surprisingly gripping story & a character study on desperation & exploitation. I remember it vividly, but just couldn't watch it a second time

#1 and #2.  #2 particularly for the basement cannibal larder.  The Road was a really good read though, still same story but wasn't as bad.  YMMV

Kino Lorber put out the Blu ray I think last year. Still holds up.

I still think it should have beat Midnight Cowboy for Best Picture.

Only two Lars Von Trier films? Could add a few more, like this one.

In a small and religious coastal town, a simple, devoutly religious Scottish woman, Bess McNeill (Emily Watson), finds a partner in an oil rig worker from Norway, Jan Nyman (Stellan Skarsgard). However, the relationship grows strained when Nyman breaks his neck in a horrific work accident on the rig and becomes paralyzed. Unable to perform sexually and suffering mentally from the accident as well, Jan convinces Bess to have sex with other men, which she comes to believe is God's work.

Too bad you didn't give a shiat about any of the characters and it was nothing more than war porn.

And Requiem for a Dream definitely deserved to be at the top. It makes grave of the fireflies look like forrest gump.

I found The Pianist to be on par or even exceed Schindler's List in terms of capturing life in the ghettos. Still, Ray Feinnes played his most evil character ever in Amon Goth (And remember, that Feinnes also played Voldemort in the Harry Potter films).

I've watched that at least 3 times. It's a dark comedy. It's not depressing. I find it up lifting.

Now Meloncholia is also supposed to be a dark comedy. It has everything I should like but I'll never watch it again because it's sooooooo boooorrrrriiiiinnngggg.

Interesting thread. I never heard of a lot of these movies.

Everything, Everywhere, All at Once belongs on that list.  Those movies are certainly huge downers, but after watching this one, I felt like hamburger.  Just beaten up.  It was a whiplash, back and forth between sublime joy and utter despair, over and over and over.  Ultimately, it was an uplifting movie, but it was such a vicious battle to get there.  I can't recommend that movie enough, yet I also in 6 months haven't been able to bring myself to watch it again.  I just don't have the strength.
