I mostly think of the right's current campaign against "wokeness" as their most recent way of claiming the moral high ground through victimhood.

The narrative goes something like this: "We're a bunch of Regular Americans* trying just trying to live our lives the way Americans have done for as long as any of us remember, without any particular malice. Now, all of these leftist groups are coming out of the woodwork and saying that our way of life is racist (even though I have a black friend!) that our ideas about gender are wrong, and that we need to make changes the way we eat and drive and work just to appease some pointy-headed city people with crazy ideas.

We didn't change! We're not hurting anyone, and now the government is telling us we're bad for wanting things to stay normal!"

Obviously versions of this narrative have existed for about as long as the USA, but calling it "wokeness" seems to be a particularly effective bit of branding to immediately signal to people with even a few reactionary/regressive leanings to declare that anyone who tries to make any improvements to society is the aggressor and they are the victims.
