He should indeed be proud of the first two Mummy movies.  They are outstanding action-comedies that are still quite watchable and enjoyable all these years later!

Good movie.

The movie poster has always bugged me though. What the heck is Moira Kelly doing with her hands?

His character really should have been bigger than it was.  He was like the next generation's Indiana Jones.  The first two movies were so much fun.  Yet somehow they kind of just came and went and it turned into a crappy direct-to-dvd series of movies.

Did it? I haven't started Season 4 yet, but the first three seasons were terrific and I consider Doom Patrol to be the best that DC has had to offer television. Having said that, I've also never met anyone else who watches it, so I can't be too surprised by its demise. I also haven't had the opportunity to observe the Fraser comeback, because I've been enjoying him on this show the whole time he's been "away."

CSB: The scene in the first Mummy where Rick meets up with Evelyn on the dockside was shot at Chatham Historic Dockyards (51.393035567814614, 0.5251710263656867), which has been used for both recent Sherlock movies & Les Mis, amongst others. When the scene was being filmed I was delivering to a site across the river (visible on the deleted scenes), so in a weird way, I'm probably in the film somewhere, only hidden by a matte painting

People have a lot of touchstone moments in movies. I love Rachel Weisz's "I am ... a librarian" from The Mummy. We'll watch it to get to that moment. And as a whole, Brendan Fraser is the best of those kind of action movie stars. (For instance, I haven't watched the original Star Trek movies with Harrison Ford since the kids all moved out ~20 years ago.) Fraser has an advantage because he's also a fine actor. (Gods and Monsters)  When the moneymen decided to punish Fraser, we lost out.

No, it's a great show.  I don't know about you but there's enough space between seasons that I start watching a new season finding myself going WTF with this show?  Then it gels how the the campy, weirdness all has a purpose and it gels into it's own brand of awesome.  It's one of those shows that does GAF, regularly swings for the stands and while that might mean some spectacular strikes it also means they pop one out of the park every once in a while.

I must've said a dozen "What the farks?" before the first ad-break of the pilot episode, mostly at the sight of Fraser's flabby ass railing the nanny, but I've delighted in every WTF the show has had to offer ever since. Last season's muppet massacre scene was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on TV. And how would you even begin to describe the character of Dannie to anyone, let alone a television executive? That show does a lot of neat stuff.

[Fark user image 335x270]

According to the audio commentary, that was ad-libbed. While waiting for long hours between takes, Rachel Weisz got bored and went to a local salon and had her eyes made up that way. When she returned to the set, everybody loved that look and director Stephen Sommers had wardrobe dress her up in customary local wear, including the veil, to highlight the eyes as much as possible. Which explains why Evie goes right back to wearing her regular clothes in the very next scene and is never shown wearing that outfit again for the rest of the movie.

I'm not surprised.  Universal has tried setting up a shared monster universe over and over again.  One centered on those two characters might have worked.  It definitely would have stood a better chance than the three later attempts at creating a shared universe.

The Mummy is one of my favorite movies. It feels like a D&D adventure with just the right amount of danger, drama, snark, and self-aware goofiness.

I would have loved to be in that theatre audience.

The first Mummy movie was not just good, it was great. A super solid load of fun.

I have no idea how I originally made it through the second one because I tried to watch it again a few years ago and that stupid farking kid annoyed me to the point that I didn't even make it thirty minutes. It is extremely easy to overdo kid shiat and that was a prime example of it.

I suspect when Stephen Sommers wrote the screenplay for the first movie, he took his time to carefully craft it, going through several drafts to understand what elements worked, and which didn't, and labored to ensure a right balance of adventure, humor, romance and horror. He needed something good to sell Universal on the project so they would agree to its substantial budget.

Then opening weekend was huge, and Stephen got a phone call from Universal telling him "we need another one for Summer of 2001". So he put words on paper as quickly as he could so that they could begin shooting and have a completed film in time for the release date.

That's how it usually is with cash grab sequels.

After The Mummy, they were planning to start a "Dark Universe" beginning with Benicio Del Toro's Wolfman.  That bombed.  Then they tried Dracula Untold to launch a "Dark Universe".  That bombed.  Then they tried Tom Cruise's The Mummy to launch what they officially called the Dark Universe.  That bombed (but had a pretty well-regarded indie game based on it).

Yep. They keep trying to go super grimdark with their classic monsters. Audiences aren't interested. It turns out that movies that are closer tonally to the lighthearted action of the 1999 Mummy film are far more successful.

They should be tapping someone like Taika Waititi or whoever did those last two Jumanji films to run that universe.
