People from California liking RHCP makes sense.. It's kind of like confederate flags - if you're from the south, yeah I suppose.. oh, man I'm high again.

I wonder what exactly the "main act" would have been

RHCP's best song is Breaking The Girl.

It's their most innovative, unique, well-crafted piece of music by a far stretch.

Otherwise, most of their songs are the same tune as Give It Away or Under The Bridge, just with different tempos and mildly different lyrics about California, being wacky, and missing someone/something.

That said, nothing can take away from the fact that Flea is one hell of a bassist who could give Bootsy Collins, Aimee Mann, Gail Ann Dorsey, John Entwistle, Geddy Lee, or Brown Mark a run for their money.

And lest you question my throwing Aimee Mann in that list...

'Til Tuesday - Love in a Vacuum
Youtube O6eeURFNmxI

She performed the bass and composed (or co-wrote) most Til Tuesday songs (and The Both, and her own solo career). That's her bassline in Love in a Vacuum. She can pound that out while singing lead, live on stage, and not lose the tempo. She's not as flashy as Bootsy or Flea, but she is no slouch when it comes to the bass and making it work toward the whole sound of the song and the band.

Gail Ann Dorsey is also amazing. She was good enough to steal some of David Bowie's thunder when she toured with him. That's no mean feat.

Oh, here's the aforementioned best RHCP track:

Breaking The Girl - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Youtube g2hZ97x6Q4k

It's completely unlike anything else in their catalog. For one thing, it's in 6/8 time signature. But it also leans away from featuring Flea's bass in favor of those harmonizing flutes via the Mellotron, and putting most of the focus on that 12-string guitar. Anthony also sings several accidentals (intentionally flat notes) that lend it a different sound than their usual fare.

They did use 6/8 time in a few other songs, but this one sticks out.

WilderKWight: RHCP's best song is Breaking The Girl.

This is the most incorrect thing that has ever been written on fark outside the poltab. Honestly don't think I've ever listened to it all the way through. Tape decks had an auto forward function, and CDs could skip.

I'm not going to define what their best song is. To me, Brother's Cup, maybe? Special Secret Song? Thirty Dirty Birds lol? I also liked Backwoods from UMPP, and Knock me Down from Mothers's.

Breaking the Girl? Whoo boy.  Not even the best song on BSSM.

It's a funny quote, but let's not pretend that Nick Cave makes better music. If he collaborated with RHCP, they could call it Mopey Mid-tempo Mofo Plan.

So having three songs, in different tempos, about 3 different topics proves that they have one song.

I own a lot of records and my day job is making records. I get asked my opinion on new releases a lot by clients & friends. I had a friend make me listen to the newest RHCP LP in one sit. I normally try to refrain from shiatting on people's tastes so I don't offend potential clients, but this record was so wholly and completely awful end-to-end, it was beyond the pale. Masturbatory over-playing, overlong runtime and song length, cookie-cutter riffs and boring arrangements, the worst singing this side of Tiny Tim and lyrics that could cause one to cringe to death, stiff white funk cliches that were hackneyed in the 90s. It does nothing that other bands weren't doing far better 30+ years ago, and is happy to alternate turgid mid tempo ballads and stale jam band 'funky' riffs until you jump from the top of the rollercoaster of love to the sweet release of death below. And don't give me that bs about Frusciante being 'amazing;' he's a bar band Hendrix clone who blew his talents on bad dope.

I'll accept your Breaking the Girl as a favorite, unique Chili's song. It's a good one.  People hate them.  Oh well.

But I'll disagree with a lot of the rest.  Everything before Blood Sugar is unique and fun.  After? One Hot Minute (with Dave Navarro) is also very unique.  The next two albums are almost completely generic sh*t.  There are some good spots in there but the songwriting is dumb and the sound is thin.

Stadium Arcadium is their best performed and produced (double) album nobody listened to - but worth a week of listening. Still not as rich and layered as Navarro's sound, but Frusciante is heavily influenced by a lot of classic stuff, especially Floyd.  There are some skip songs but a few unique gems.

I haven't listened to much after.  As much as Kiedis improved as a singer (from a 1 to a 6), he's still just terrible.  If they found a way to hide him... I also think they release the wrong singles to radio.
