The Carol Burnett Show was required viewing for the family when I was growing up, as was Laugh In, The Flip Wilson Show, Sonny and Cher and All in the Family. Probably missing a few but it was a time of great comedy shows.

Watchcing The Carol Burnett Show was like watching a Broadway show in your living room on Saturday night. The show had a resident dance troupe and a live orchestra and terrific guest stars.

While Carol's a treasure, and certainly very talented... for me she the prime reason she's special is she put Tim Conway on her variety show.

My wife and I watch all the classic Conway sketches every year.  We can lip sync with the Elephant Sketch until we inevitably break down in laughter.

Also... if you're reading this and you have yet to see the Elephant Sketch, find it on YouTube or something.  If you don't at least crack a big grin you're not entirely human.

I'm honestly not sure you can find a better supporting cast. Up and down, the line up. Harvey korman, Tim Conway, etc. Just top notch comedy. And it was genuine. You could watch the show and realize they thought it was as funny as everyone else and could tell they were having just as much fun as anyone else.

I think at least 10% of my enjoyment of the show came from watching them try to crack each other up mid-skit, and all the biggest laughs came when someone succeeded.

Oh yeah. You could tell they spent time figuring out how to fark with each other but stay within the boundaries of the script and show.

Variety shows were huge in the 60s and 70s because all of the true talent was either originally a vaudevilian, or were brought up studying the same.

We've lost that. I mentioned this a few years ago, and someine pointed to Joseph Gordon Leavitt and Justin Timberlake, but that's about it. They could do comedy, straight acting, sing, dance, all right there, and all switching from one to the other live.

We don't have that any more, and I miss it. And when the Osbournes tried one, it flopped. Carol Burnett was spectacular, and she's still an awesome talent. We have actors who can sing or dance as well as act, but it's not the same.

There's a subtle, intelligent humor that's pretty much gone.  You had to think a second to get the joke.  Carol Burnett and the rest of the cast knew how to do it.  At the same time, they could telegraph a joke and still make it funny.  People like that are timeless.  When you saw them crack, you knew it was going to be good.

We need more 3 Stooges.

Whatever.

No, 3 Stooges weren't intellectual comedy. Marx Brothers, sure, but 3 stooges were just slapstick.

But it still takes talent to tell stupid jokes and actually be good at it. That's what the Stooges could do. But I don't think there was a single Stooges bit that made you think about the joke for a second... Even then, they were better than most modern comedy.

This is one of those things that I feel is pointless to try and explain to anyone to young to have seen the show at the time.

Its essentially vaudeville, with humor that's a combination of Borscht Belt and  Mel Brooks (for reference, C. Burnett was NOT riding on anyone's coattails).

The show was, and is, hilarious, but definitely of its time.

I think it also helped that there only 3 channels back then so the audience would be familiar with the guest stars because they were usually drawn from pop music or TV shows. "Tonight's guests are Bette White, Vincent Price, and  Bernadette Peters!" That well of talent just doesn't exist today.

Also, the costs of producing a weekly variety show would be prohibitively expensive today, especially considering that broadcast TV is essentially a dying medium with a much diminished audience.

I know there's a lot of love for the elephant story, but the best version of it was an outtake.

My favorite Tim Conway moment is the dentist sketch. Conway himself cracks near the end, but for him to get Korman to crack as much as he does feels like one of comedy's greatest accomplishments. Conway just sells it so damn well. Amazing stuff.

Because Mama was trying to say her lines but Conway just kept talking about elephants. So when Carol says, "C'mon Mama" for her to read her lines, Mama says, "You sure that little asshole is through?" Meaning is he done talking about elephants yet??
