This should be an interesting cluster fark, if it ever materializes.  Haven't they threatened this twice a year for 5+ years now?

My computer knowledge is well over 10 years outdated, but I imagine one person on the acct using a VPN would cause some major farkups, or bypass the whole attempt at a crackdown in the first place.

So I get Netflix for free through a cell phone family plan promotion. My family on the plan are in two separate states. No clue how Netflix plays this. Does the Netflix account go to the primary account holder? The cell phone provider doesn't give a shiat that we're in different areas, so will Netflix care?

We're barely watch Netflix though, so if it goes away it's no big deal. We're getting way more use out of the free Apple+

I travel for work and own a vacation home. What kind of crap am I going to have to deal with when I want to watch simmering away from home? Hell, hotels now have smart tvs.

Been a long time customer. Will probably cancel if there's any hassle.

If you approve your phone as a device, you might be able to screencast in alternate locations. Not ideal, but a workaround.

Seems like the simple solution is to force 2 factor authentication via text message "for security".  This would stop the randos like an ex that are leeching onto your account and would at least make it annoying for people who are purposely sharing passwords.

My one issue with this is you pay for a certain number of screens already.  Remove that, and add the "no sharing" policy, so it's one account per household, and I'm okay with that.  Shouldn't matter if we've got 4 or 10 screens in that household.

But if me having an account that allows 4 screens to be used, it shouldn't matter to Netflix where those screens are.  I'm paying for a feature, here.  Especially since it's simultaneous screens; I don't need 4 screens to cover my PC, my TV, my tablet, and my phone.  I'm not gonna use 2 screens at once.  The only reason to have that is to cover multiple users.  If I'm paying for 4 simultaneous users, why does Netflix care where they live?

If you don't immediately change all possible known passwords after a breakup, well, you're an idiot like me and will have to do some serious damage control later down the road.

Why do s everyone think that will be the issue? There are a ridiculous number of streaming/gaming services everyone uses today that do this. They simply check for active steam count against plan. Its not rocket science and people are already used to it. Honestly i dont know why this is hot button topic for anyone.

The FANG squeeze is on.

The ongoing narrative that they are benevolent giants is wrong.

Google raised youtube premium prices and is looking at everything to make more revenue. Your gmail, docs, maps and drive will be given a very very hard look by Google and look to monetize it somehow.

I'm fully disconnected from "FAN" but G has got me by the balls. A good squeeze and I will be hurtin'.

I have a couple times, using a password written down on a piece of paper that my wife got from her parents.  I don't ever remember needing to call them for 2 factor.  On the other hand, every month or so I need to call my mom for the 2 factor code so I can use her Comcast credentials to log back into all of the TV station apps on my Roku (Peacock, AMC,etc.).

Maps is used by drivers for delivery and taxi apps. They likely get a cut of the delivery fee. Email and drive is a data treasure trove.

2023-01-27 1:17:42 AM
If you're paying for X screens, it doesn't (or shouldn't) matter where those screens are. If Netflix wants one account per household, then eliminate the screen count.

I should be able to host a Netflix night with 40 people each watching something different if I want, since it's one account on one wifi network. If that's not allowed, then Netflix is trying to double dip, which is incentivizing piracy.

Waze app is scary. Every time your car stops, they show an ad. I fear Google maps will turn into something like that.

I'm trying to get NextCloud setup at a home server. So much of my data is in Google clouds and I'm trying to migrate it all in my home cloud.

Google isn't cheap/tacky like that.  If you ever wonder how they make their money just start with a zoomed out map with no search criteria and then start zooming in.

The map advertising is a use paradox. If I'm looking for something to eat in a certain cuisine but I don't know where, I can do a search and am served the locations promoted by ad spend. Various brands as well a small operators with small marketing savvy will gladly chip in a few bucks a day to getting into the first row of search results.

I'm convinced people who LIKE the Hulu, Disney plus, or Crunchyroll layout are brain damaged. And Prime is farking joking by mixing it's pay-per stuff with the included stuff, tricking you into thinking you have a wide selection to watch when you only have 1/3rd.

Selection? Sure. Quality? Noooooo. No no no no. Nooooo.

When CBS/Paramount and NBC took all their IP home, every streaming service sucks equally.

It's a shiat layout. Anyone can navigate a road full of potholes. It's much nicer to drive on a flat asphalt road.

FWIW, Netflix has a family plan and each profile keeps it's own recommendations, etc...  We have four profiles spread around the world.  Works well as a feature.

Changing your terms of service to a regular customer is wrong the 'Murican way.

I believe Netflix has already shut down password sharing everywhere but north America. If a fella really wanted to know how they're gonna do it here, it seems like it wouldn't be that difficult to figure out. I'm currently enjoying Ginny and Georgia. It's like Euphoria with less drugs and a crazy hot mom.

I watch netflix from one device. My IP, however, changes daily and (judging by those location tracking ads) can appear to be literally anywhere* in my home province.

/  Always funny to see an ad claiming hundreds of young, horny women want me from communites with a population under twenty. The hypercars-for-auction one is just as funny.

My BIL pays extra for the Netflix account that is able to support additional concurrent logins - it's not freeloading. All of the logistics for super common situations (business travel, college kids, multiple home families, etc) this will cause people nothing but headaches for trying to use their service that has "just worked" for years. Netflix is making a grave mistake with this. People who care will figure out ways around it in days, and everyone else will just cancel their service or acquire Netflix content "through other means".

Contrast with Apple TV which literally, as part of the much cheaper fee, ENCOURAGES you to share the sub with family members.

In the history of the world, businesses that start treating their customers as the enemy, always do well.

2023-01-27 7:31:47 AM
I have a 4 screen account to use at our two houses concurrently. If they force me to relog every time then I'm dumping them, since they'll just be a glorified cable provider at that point.

The whole idea of streaming was to avoid being pinned to one location.

Same, except we do live in the same state. We started with the phone company in 2000, they were bought and then bought again. We've had Netflix since 2004, but it's been part of our phone plan for several years now. Everyone just sends me their share of the phone bill every month.

Boycotts only work if you were buying something in the first place. Christ, you idiots, am I going to spend all that money sending you to college for you to not realize that?
