I feel like America's image has moved from this:

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

wademh: That sounds like a MAGA Mission Accomplished.

Not really, the MAGA types want slaves.  They don't want legal immigration, but they do want illegals to do all the jobs they don't want, and to get horribly underpaid and poorly treated for it under threat of imprisonment or deportation.

They also don't understand that the current economic system is built on eternal growth, and since there aren't enough babies - and removing access to birth control and denying freedom of movement to women isn't going to fix this - they need those immigrants to keep the economy functioning long enough for them to retire in something other than abject poverty.  Somebody has to staff the nursing homes...

This is another 'dog caught the car' situation.  They get what they think they want, then they're going to get killed by it.

Fatbro in picture 3. You're shirtless, you've got a swastika tattoo, and are carrying a nazi (presumably) flag...could you try to not look so bored? Everyone else either looks really angry or super happy but here you are just "Man, I sure do love beating up gay people but did we have to do this march today? New Yellowstone drops in a few hours and I'm gonna miss it."

Maybe? Maybe they do, and they're just being stupid about their soution. They seem to be using Covid to cull the herd, reduce the population, crash the eocnomy, and start the whole cycle up again for another 100 years. Now that climate change has given them a maximum growth limit, they might be using Covid to reat the first bounce off that ceiling, back down to a floor of their choosing (they assusme a more effective vaccine will arrive). Then they can have their growth economy again.

So out of all the countries in the world, 18% of people would choose the US.  And the next closest choice is Canada at 8%.

Yeah, we totally suck.

First we had Reagan Republicans who put up a relatively good façade to hide their love of fascism, but then DIABEETUS started thinning out their numbers and their kids started questioning why they were trading guns for cocaine. Then we had the True Patriots who took 9/11 to be the only invitation required to put bootheels on the necks of anyone they could to chase a piece of that heroic glory, but PTSD and the opioid epidemic took a heavy toll on those former upstanding citizens. Now its down to scum who never aspired to do anything but live an easy life off of oppressing others. Who the F wants to live next door to morons that?

Yeah, though we really ought to worry about adjusting our economic system to be stable with a static population level and reduce immigration to replacement rate.

We have too many people here, and we're rapidly chewing through the remaining green space in the more pleasant regions building housing.  Things were in many ways a lot better when we only had 20m people... like you didn't have to be a multi-millionaire to afford a cottage with waterfront, it didn't take an hour to drive 20 km during rush hour in urban areas, etc.

It's much simpler than that. Republicans don't give a shiat about immigration.  However, they cultivate the spectre of evil immigrants to rally the base and keep themselves in power. You're implying they have a long-term, sustainable plan.

I mean, that's what I'm doing.

Before Trump, my partner and I were discussing them moving to the US with me; I had a stable job and income, plus friends and found family. Even started the process for immigration.

We stopped the discussion and process when he was elected.
We decided that I would be the one to move after COVID started.

My approval to live in my partner's country arrived last Friday, and I'm moving this spring. I'm done with this crap.

btw, subby, from the referenced Gallup poll which covers 2011-2021, the US is up to 18% from a low of 17% two years ago.   Not only that but it more than twice as desirable as the second-most favorite destination, Canada, which is at an all time high of 8%.   Germany is at 7% and no other nation is above 4%.

Getting your headline that wrong should require a permaban from this site.

Fark:  republicans are totally in favor of illegal immigration.

The distinction is between the morons who vote for Trump, and the grifters who fleece them.  For an example, you don't have to look any further than Trump's repeated employment of illegal immigrants across his various business enterprises:

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/08/trump-organization-undocumented-workers

https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a30379305/trump-winery-undocumented-workers-fired/

https://www.mycentraljersey.com/story/news/2019/12/05/bound-brook-women-exposed-trumps-illegal-immigrants-bedminster-club/2618504001/

Also, you could build a wall across the entire US southern border, comprised of 10 meter thick titanium, extending from the core of the Earth to outer space, and it still won't stop illegal immigration, as the majority of undocumented immigrants don't enter the US illegally, but overstay their visas:

https://www.npr.org/2019/01/16/686056668/for-seventh-consecutive-year-visa-overstays-exceeded-illegal-border-crossings

Also wont stop those immigrants who engage in visa fraud enabled by the wealthy, like Trump's wife probably did:

And you would have complained about the "Boat People" in the 1970s. After all, why come here from Cambodia or Vietnam? They should have stayed in their own countries and fixed them, right?

If you have ever complained about Venezuelan socialism, you need shut your ugly mouth about migrants trying to escape to America from a communist dictatorship.

Honestly it's the guns and the racism.
Mr Nonsense has gotten good job offers in the states. He won't move there because he's a PoC and doesn't want to deal with that level of racism. I won't move there because I don't want to him in harm's way and I don't want to get shot up buying groceries. That's what us outsiders see when we look at America.

2023-01-27 11:49:48 PM
Cue Republicans and white conservatives all over America spewing steam from both ears when you make them understand that all we had to do was help keep Central and South American countries - or even just a couple of them - in a state better than the "brutal civil war" / "mafia/cartel war zone" / "brutal autocracy with crippling poverty" combos we've created so our oligarchs could rape their natural resources, and it would put a stop to all the desperate poor people trying to get here.  Well, very much most of them, anyhow.
