(Some Guy)   Faxed bomb threats paralyze Japanese schools. One can imagine principals staring at the office fax machine, waiting for the ring, the beep and the plasticy printout containing the next fateful fax setting up the bomb   (wionews.com) divider line

Any time I hear the word "fax" in the year of our lord Dr. Robotnik 2023 I know it automatically came from Japan.

I work in Gubmint so our fax machine is right there. Problem is toner is almost out and who to replace it? Good think 99 percent of incoming are for roofing firms

FAX machine spam was a bit of a problem, although it did give you something to mindlessly leaf through if you were unlucky enough to show up for a coffee refill while the next pot was still brewing.

I work in Japan. My workplace got rid of the fax machines about 5 years ago because no one was using them.

I'm surprised no one figured out how to jam a thermal fax machine so it caught fire. It would be a brilliant arson tool.

The Telex machine is kept so clean
And it types to a waiting world
Her mother feels so shocked, father's world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl

The real headline here is that Japan still uses fax machines.

Once you get more than, let's say 10, threats then I think it's safe to just ignore them all.
Because at that point, it's just ridiculous.
And if people are going to do something, they are going to do something anyways, with or without threats.

Japan uses still using fax machines is a regional curiosity, like the way checks are (I think) still pretty common in the U.S.A.

It must be at least 30 years since I last saw a check/cheque being used. Some old guy tried to pay with one in a store and the young cashier was very confused.

My company sells to state governments and a few of them still send us POs by fax. We asked if there was an email option, and they said no -- the only other option is to send them by post (snailmail).

Germany also still uses them for lots of business/ government things.

Some of the earlier fax machines printed on a roll of glossy thermal "paper" like they used to have for receipt printers. Then they started connecting fax modems to regular office paper printers.

Japan used to be at the technological forefront and then got stuck some time around 1994. I blame Godzilla.

Live in the USA and the town library still has a fax machine. Actually used it as recently as 5 or 6 years ago to send something to the VA.

When Toyota first introduced the Lexus LS400, the model for the Japanese market had a fax machine in it. Super luxury.

/saw it at the Toyota museum in Nagoya

I do.  I have an HP all-in-one laser printer/scanner/fax and I generally use the Fax once a year to send my tax shiat to my accountant.

The Fax has come in handy for some medical things, too.  Doctors and hospitals still use Fax a lot.

I'm sure the idea was used as a plot for an episode of Columbo or Murder She Wrote.

Lawyers. The way I understand it, a faxed signature is legally binding, but a scanned-and-mailed one isn't.  Also because it uses dial-up telephone lines, a fax is "confidential" in ways that email, which is unencrypted and transmitted over the public internet, isn't.  (If the recipient leaves a fax hanging around in the mail room or the photocopy room to be viewed by all and sundry who walk by, that's their problem.)
