Way better use of resources for certain offenses. I can see where removing the personable element that in-person provides can work for or against you. Although it shouldn't be a factor, I can guarantee you that how someone looks and presents themselves can impact a ruling, for better or worse.

Despite knowing that needing to explain a joke it's less funny, it's niche as fark:  The plot of Macross Plus (Macross is known as Robotech in the US) centers around a virtual idol named Sharon Apple who is given sentience, who then takes over an experimental unmanned fighter and a huge space fortress and many explosions ensue, culminating in the outlaw of AI research.
