I'm not sure what happened to this film, though the idea was pretty good. It winds up a morass of conflicting and weak cultural critique.

The film did move our civilization forward by proving that Anya Taylor-Joy has now tasted her first cheeseburger.

I highly enjoyed it!   It was much better than Triangle of Sadness, which had a similar theme (i.e eat the rich).

I thought it was a cool movie. And also thought they made it clear the fanboy, who hired an escort to bring her to her death, was the primary asshole in the movie.

The chef was just a whiny little mid life crisis biatch. Wah, I'm at the top of my field and there is nowhere else to go! I am so bored and unfulfilled! I could open a decent burger joint and cook for non assholes but I have a better idea!

I completely agree.  Yet I still really enjoyed it.

Nicholas Hoult is at his best when he plays roles filled with high nervous energy, like in The Favourite, The Great, and The Menu. Looks like he's bringing it to Renfield as well.

Anya Taylor-Joy moves our civilization forward just by existing.

I disagree.  I felt that The Menu was a somewhat unfocused in it's criticism while Triangle of Sadness had more to say about class.

That and he probably owed an assload of money to that angel investor whose minions got invitations too. The real plothole is the entire kitchen crew going along with his plan.

I thought the idea was that the restaurant was collateral. He could have walked away and the Angel would have been holding the bag without a star chef.

Agreed on the crew. At least one of the several dozen people would have bolted and told the police, press or both that Chef was off the rails and planning something heinous.

LOL!  I disagree with that.  I got bored with ToS, and I was disappointed with its ending.   Like, rolled my eyes and all.   Menu actually made me think about its ending.

This year saw 3 solid movies along that line: Triangle of Sadness, The Menu, and Glass Onion. Though 2019 had a much stronger "eat the rich" triple bill with Parasite, Knives Out, and Ready or Not.

I thought it was more a criticism of celebrity worship than a class conflict.  As in, celebrities have their supporters who will do whatever they say no matter what, there are financial backers who don't understand the artistry, there are fanbois who obsess about the details of the art without appreciating the work itself, minor celebrities who try to tag themselves onto the truly talented ones, etc.  And Anya Taylor-Joy is the only one out of all of them who appreciates that art is to be enjoyed, above all.

Well at least one of the kitchen staff was suicidal.  And Chef Katherine says that the "everybody dying at the end" part was her idea, because otherwise the menu made no sense..

What was the plan (and the menu) *before* she suggested that?  Presumably just *some* people dying, but who?  The diners or the kitchen?

The interesting thing is that the chef didn't want to do glorified food. You have to wonder how much of the "fanciness", for lack of a better word, he adopted over the years because the fanboys and critics. One day he looked around, realizes how ridiculous it all is, and then decided on a course of action.

I don't think money was really a problem. He got an angel investor involved for the sole purpose of bringing them to the final meal.

I still don't understand how you get the entire crew to go along.

I just assumed they were all basically a suicide cult. True, the movie didn't explain how it got to that point, but that would require an entirely separate movie. And it wasn't really relevant.

The fact is, suicide cults do exist. In this case, the cult served as a metaphor for celebrity chef culture. I just accepted that as a premise, and moved on from there.

It's not important to the plot, I think. Only that they *have* decided to go along.

Is there a term for movies that ostensibly take place in the real world but actually have impossibly fantastical elements to them? Like Better off Dead, or The Blue Brothers.

When they are doing the tour of the island in the beginning, the descriptions she gave of the communal living quarters and absence of free time hints, especially in hindsight, at the cult-like view the staff have.

And if we can accept that a celebrity chef fan boy is willing to go to his death (with his unwitting escort) for a great meal, we can certainly accept that a celebrity chef can assemble a suicide cult. In an obviously heightened reality.

The way I saw it, he had a messianic complex and over the years assembled a work force as a cult who would follow him as their cult leader. The Nicolas Hoult character was a fanboy who knew the truth but only wanted to be a part of that cult.

It's meant to be dark satire anyway, so who cares if it's a little absurdist.

This. The movie is clearly not meant to be a work of realism. It's better to approach it as a B movie satire (not meant to be a dismissive term) of various trends related to the food industry and wealth in America. Characters and events are - as you note - painted with a broad brush to heighten the absurdity of so many elements of food culture.

The chef was just a whiny little mid life crisis biatch. Wah, I'm at the top of my field and there is nowhere else to go! I am so bored and unfulfilled! I could open a decent burger joint and cook for non assholes but I have a better idea!

He may have wanted to open a burger joint, but he couldn't. The super fans would have mobbed the place and ruined it as well.

When I first saw her I thought that was Lori Petty.

Which *almost* makes sense if you assume the whole thing is an assault on cults and the worship of chefs and glorified food.

I believe we call that the Trump effect which people blindly follow their idol to their quite obvious demise en masse.

It was a cult!
I think they could have justified it if they hammered home how demanding and devastating restaurant work can be.

The demands that can never be lived up to and the devastation that caused was explained in the fourth course, The Mess.

It's not even subtext, it was text.

Fair.
But it felt missing. We saw glimpses of Chef's past, but I felt like it was a missed opportunity to show the toll that restaurant work takes on your body and relationships. I wish we got to see more about the others.

Show, don't tell.
