IMPORTANT NOTE:

One of the DLC items is missable. You do a fight in a castle in the Divine Paralogues section to get a DLC character. You may see a little glimmer in an area you can't get to, You're supposed to use Warp or Rewarp to get to it. If you don't grab it you're SOL.

I've been following this all week long:

https://www.reddit.com/r/gtaonline/comments/10jpoze/dangerous_new_pc_exploit/

Apparently there's a new exploit in GTAV:Online that has allowed hackers to take near total control of other players money, assets, mission achievements, and other things. Some people have had all their vehicles and money zeroed.

The hack apparently could be as malicious as being able to get into your PC to do all sorts of other untold horrors.

Rockstar has been near silent and apparently a fix is on the way, but out of extreme caution I have stayed away. I have over 1,650 hours played and if I lost all my stuff, I would be livid.

I'm starting to wonder if the threat is overblown. Someone on Reddit mentioned that online PC traffic is basically exactly the same. So a lot of people probably don't know about this and are continuing to play.

Barring missing out on the "30% off prices in stores" DLC item I'm enjoying Fire Emblem: Engage a lot. It feels like an evolution of the previous games.

The fights still seem more difficult (even on Normal) than they did in 3H but some of that is the return of SAL (Sword -> Axe -> Lance).

The DLC bracelet is somewhat OP but the DLC ring is way OP lol.

So I did get an Anbernic RG351p and threw a 128 gig card in it, so far so good. It plays some Saturn, PSP, and Dreamcast, and anything PS1 or before either perfect or great with 2x upscaling. It took some tinkering to get it going out of the box with a new OS, but it has been a fun little sidebar when I'm waiting on work crap or whatever. The emulation is OK out of the box but it is years old at this point and the homebrew community has stepped up. I am still trying to get the Ports tab to work which would open up some PC stuff like Quake 3 arena and Spelunky but it is still freezing when I try to boot.

There are a lot of old NeoGeo games I haven't tried, same with Turbographix and some of the other obscure consoles.
Darius Gaiden runs, the old Saturn side scrolling shooter that was legenarily difficult/awesome back in the day, and it is still solid.

The article lists System Shock 2, then describes System Shock. 10/10 list.

I got to the point in Stranded Deep where you have to fight the bosses. It's... Not great. I may complete the game, or I might just drop it.

While looking for something else (I honestly don't even remember what), I learned there was a new Steamwold game coming out, Steamwold Build. And there's a demo on steam. So I pulled it and played through the demo.

The game is like Anno (Well, Anno 2070 is the one I'm familiar like it), where you have to fulfill the needs of the houses to upgrade them and get more people/specialists to move in. And it stays like that, until you go in the mine and it turns into

That's right, Dungeon Keeper of all things. At least, that's what it seems like. You have to dig out spaces to place rooms to support the workers. The demo ends before any enemies show up, but there's room space for Guards so presumably something shows up at some time. It's an interesting little game I'll have to keep an eye on.

But the Dungeon Keeper bit whet my appetite, so I dug through my library and started Dungeons 3. That desperately needs a "Skip line" button, but otherwise it seems okay so far. I guess we'll see if it stays good or not.

QOTW: Outer Wilds and it's DLC Echoes of the Eye. Always. And most of the people that have played it will tell you to play it. But, try not to read or watch anything about it, because it's about discovering things yourself is the game.

I am somewhat surprised by the lack of Mark of Kri games. Mind you, South Pacific inspired action games are kind of niche, and Mark of Kri and Rise of the Kasai were based on a novel way of targeting, but in execution made the flow of combat in a 360 space flow amazingly well. Plus the early cell shaded look coupled with said South Pacific islander aesthetic it was a unique game for the time too. Still is, considering that current market. But, as neat as it was to be able to take on being surrounded by bad guys without losing a beat, the thing was, it was a game that dd stealth mechanics really well too. Each weapon had its own animation, so if you were using sword or staff, you had a satisfying bit of immersion with sneaking up on enemies and getting stabby, or knocking the legs out from under them to do bad things to them as they fell. And it was one of the few games where you looked forward to drawing a bow for stealth mission.

The controls were intuitive, but it took time to master the little intricacies, and it felt great as you were rewarded in the gameplay loop, and on top of it, the story channeled Mako's "...these are the tales of HIGH Adventure!" It was a pair of games that showed off what the PS2 could do, and ridiculously fun. They were a weird blend of influences, and I wish that Jay Beard's BottleRocket studio hadn't gone under, because it was a solid pair of games. San Diego Studio pretty much got bought out to do nothing but sports games--and they KEEP putting out MLB games--and BottleRocket went bankrupt, but it's an IP I would love to visit again. There just aren't a lot of Maori/South Pacific inspired fantasy out there, and I would have loved to have seen how the team could and would have developed the signature target mapping. Not to mention the animation style was unique as well. Imagine Don Bluth doing dark fantasy. I wish they could resurrect this franchise from the heap, because they were fun as heck.

Games that don't get enough hype: Tunic, Dragon Quest 11.

I picked up Fire Emblem Engage but am really struggling to get into it.

I tried Three Houses a couple times, but never got more than halfway through because it felt like 75% life sim/25% tactical combat.  I'm not generally big on life sim stuff (same reason I'm the only person in the world who doesn't like Persona) but Three Houses was at least well written with some interesting characters.  I just wished there was more of a focus on the combat.

With Engage, it's like they flew the pendulum back entirely in the other direction.  There's much more combat that is quite fun, but the overall story and characters are absolute garbage.  To the point of making the game difficult to enjoy because it's so awful.  Outside of combat, it's simply every anime trope crammed together with absolutely terrible writing, a lame story, and atrocious voice work.  I bounced off it almost immediately (after 3 hours) earlier in the week, but am going to give it another look this weekend.  Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood.

On tabletop, I finally found a copy of one of my "This looks amazing but I missed the Kickstarter and probably won't ever get to play it" games, Dwellings of Eldervale.  This is a truly amazing game, and has almost immediately launched into my personal top 10.  It's combination of worker placement, dice-chuckin combat, and cardplay is brilliant, and it has maybe the best components I've ever seen.  Can't say enough good things about it.

Underrated game would Shadow Hearts 2.  A weird, quirky, hilarious, touching, and fantastic PS2 JRPG that I'm pretty sure no one ever played.  Shame they destroyed the series with an absolutely horrid third game.   :(

Still burning piles of money on MtG. Hoping this weekend i can help the store owner build some painting stations for Warhammer 40k (or whatever mini's the customers want to paint).

Best game with little hype: 7 Days to Die. Is it still in Alpha/Beta? Yes. Have they been implementing changes over the years... absolutely. And i don't mean patching some weird little thing that didn't matter. Actual big hard hitting changes. This game has grown a LOT. It's the only 'early release' game that feels like the company is actually doing something with their product, rather than a quick cash grab for a heap of shiat game.

Haven't played much new lately, so just going to dive into the topic.

Horizon Chase Turbo

Arcade racer in the same vein as Cruisin USA. It's overall very simple, but there is a decent amount of challenge from the AI in later races, especially if you're trying to fully clear a level by getting the tokens on the course as well as win the race. It was a PS+ game several years ago, but you won't regret buying it, can't imagine it being very expensive these days

Well crap, I was wondering how I was supposed to get that item, to late now. What item was it?

I just beat chapter 11, made me glad I wasn't dependent on using emblems to get through maps.

Some of the characters seem kind of odd or against type though

The MC has been a bit odd, his stat gains have been solid, except I've been strength screwed pretty hard so far, I've been able to bandaid it by doing the pushup minigame and cooking, but it's a shame since he's otherwise a solid unit.

Celine is a caster, which is fine, but she doesn't seem to get much magic growth though she does get solid strength gains, she has gotten a lot of speed though, so she doubles almost everything. I'll probably promote her into some variety of swordmage class.

Boucheron is a weird axe user, he seems to love gaining every stat EXCEPT strength. His build and HP (I've gotten +2 HP levels, so his total growths have to be over 100%) are ludicrous though, not going to have to worry about how heavy weapons are with him, he seems like a good candidate to use the new "smash" weapons. Not sure what I'll promote him into yet.

Albert has been pretty stat blessed for me, except in speed, which is just high enough that he rarely gets doubled, but low enough I haven't seen him double anything in a while either. His defense is quite high though, I'm considering some variety of armor knight as a promotion.

The caster kid you get right away never gained any magic through his first few levels, so he got insta benched, the healer girl did get decent stat gains, but as soon as I got the child soldier she got benched, since FE games LOVE them some child soldiers, who has had LUDICROUS stat gains so far (except strength and HP) I'll probably promote him into a mage/healer (sage?) hybrid if possible, since he's gotten decent magic gains.

I've been having fun with it so far, it feels a bit less tedious than 3 Houses, since you don't have nearly as much non combat stuff to manage and none of the levels so far have felt like a straight up "FU, someone's dying no matter what you do" (I'm not playing on a high difficulty though).

I'm giving Hi-Fi Rush a go this weekend. It has an amazing art style.

I've also dedicated myself to finishing Star Wars: Jedi Survivorahead of the sequel dropping later this year. I'm terrible at souls combat but it makes sense for a lightsaber game.

List of 100 best games- No mentions of Mechwarrior series, Command & Conquer, Duke Nukem 3d, Rainbow 6 series.

2023-01-27 9:51:21 AM
My current game is still Psychonauts 2.  I had no idea that Jack Black was in it until I reached his character.  My progress is slow because I have allowed myself to get heavily sunk back into PAYDAY 2.

On the subject of PAYDAY 2, I assisted a friend with finding the Secret and unlocking the true ending.  After pulling off the five prerequisite heists and activating the amulet, he needed a total of thirteen achievements.  On Wednesday we obtained the second to last of them and last night we accomplished the final needed task and then, with both of us worthy, we took on the White House.

I had forgotten how much the music in that game utterly slaps.

Games that do not get enough hype?

Walking simulators are controversial as "games" but I feel like Ether One really did not get enough attention -- especially because it can be played as a walking simulator but really getting the full story requires playing it as something of an adventure/puzzle game, also, and the story that it tells is quite emotional.

Would Alan Wake qualify?  As I understand, it undersold but it really is a great Sam Lake work.

Arx Fatalis was a fantastic first-person action RPG inspired by Ultima Underworld that was heavily overshadowed by Morrowind at the time of release.  It really deserved more attention as it has an interesting world that would have been a great subject for future games.

Bunny Must Die: Chelsea and the Seven Devils is a rather silly but well made Metroidvania that seems to have something of a cult following.

Night of the Rabbit is a 2013 point-and-click adventure game that actually plays like the games from the Golden Age of Adventure Gaming -- the LucasArts kind, where the challenge is from solving puzzles and not accidentally making the game unwinnable.

Strife never got the attention that it deserved due it using the DOOM engine and Quake coming out at about the same time.

On the subject of the DOOM engine, check out Ashes 2063and Ashes Afterglow, both free total conversions of DOOM that play and feel like they were released and forgotten about in the 1990s just before the rise of true 3D based shooters.  Both are utterly fantastic.

My first thought, too.  Nor Dwarf Fortress.  (Maybe they don't count because they're free and don't have graphics requirements that raise ocean levels.)

But the only D&D themed turn-based RPG is Divinity:Original Sin II, which is great.  But no mention of SSI's Gold Box AD&D titles, the Baldur's Gate titles, nor even what is widely claimed to be the best so far, Planescape: Torment.

And no turn based wargames at all.  C'mon, where's Panzer General?

The IGN editors clearly have twitchy thumbs.

(Also, all of Blizzard's mega-hits are bunched together right smack dab in the middle of their list.)

Got a guilt trip over spending money on games I haven't finished, and had a feel for role-playing or strategy.

Hm, Icewind Dale 1 ... crap, my saves were on old dead laptop. I was halfway through too. But I spent equivalent of a Blockbuster rental fee money.
Icewind Dale 2 ... eh, $3.99 ...
Witcher 3, still not feeling it.
Divinity Original Sin 1. $24 several years ago. Recall love/hate with it before real-life pushed it out. C'mon down.

Problem: I had no clue what I was supposed to do next at Level 11, had inventory bags full of s--t and needed a refresher. Plus I had remembered I wasn't satisfied with character builds as I lacked a tank.

Well, goddamn, kill the 20-30 hours I sank into it (background on during hockey games bloats that occasionally), restart. Paladin-style tank with leadership, man-at-arms and earth magic. Witch with unholy and pyro magics and thieving skills (did waste two points on loremaster and something else).

Do I need charisma talent and on which one? Have the ice mage guy as my crafter and blacksmith; archer as my loremaster and debating to put thieving skills on her after possible respec on the witch.

Both of those are way too niche and unapproachable by the common gamer.  Put it this way they both scream that they should be right up my alley of interests but I've never played either.

Brave Fencer Musashion the PS1 should have been a smash hit but I never saw any advertising or reviews for it.

The list in its own way is a masterpiece, it is a good list that it trolls just enough to get people to engage while still being relatively solid (ignoring a fair amount of recency bias) list of games.

I have started playing Persona 4, I had played it in the past on ps vita but I wasn't able to finish.  I do enjoy it being on a larger screen.
